The post made me laugh, but it was regularly theorised during 2008-2012 when we had the dance-pop boom that there might be a connection between it and cultural/political events (e.g. people being happy that Obama was President, or escapism after the 2008 recession where people were struggling). If you search you might still be able to find articles or think-pieces on it. I remember reading a fair few, and discussing it on this forum and others actually.

I do remember those takes as well and to be honest, I think more of that was projection on the part of writers. It's not like hit music was any less dour or downbeat during some of the Bush years and despite the optimism Obama had, people were still facing a harsh recession in 2009. I feel like it's more a back and forth trend of hit music being "more upbeat" than "downbeat" and on and on it goes.

Will "Seven" be #1 on Hot 100 with close to 150k sales? It sounds like it has 66k digital downloads by midweek. By end of week, it'd be 100k probably.

But don't forget about the physical CD single sales from the BTS website. Wouldn't that be another 50k physical copies sold? Or possibly 100k physical copies?

So "Seven" could end up selling 150k or possibly 200k total (digital downloads + physical sales), which would guarantee #1 on the Hot 100?

Good to know now everyone 100% has a song that is guaranteed to be #1 on their worst lists. I'll fu--ing scream if this song gets caught between years and we'll have to deal with this shit in 2024. Maybe. But that's not guaranteed. There are two alternative scenarios that could take place.

- The Outrageous Scenario: Billboard could simply place AIWFCIY's seasonal run in its own lane and prevent it (and other Christmas-themed songs) from ranking on the updated GOAT list.

- The Takeover Scenario: AIWFCIY gets usurped by another of its seasonal cohorts. Like Brenda Lee's RATCT (which keeps coming closer to doing so each year). Or Ariana Grande's STM. Or Kelly Clarkson's UTT.

There were certainly plenty of opportunities to "stop the evil". Also, most artists don't really pay attention to the details of when where and how videos are shot, that's why they pay a fortune to production companies,
