Just between us…do you remember it?
I LOVE THE FALL. And hats and scarves, and knee socks, and wearing tights for the first time in months, and when the mornings are all chilly and you can see your breath and draw little pictures on foggy windows, and plaid stuff and ANKLE BOOTS, and not caring when people make fun of pumpkin flavored stuff cause you LOVE IT and are happy it's all the rage, and people who dress their dogs in costumes on Halloween, and fires in fireplaces, and maroon/hunter green/mustard yellow color combos, and baking your first fall batch of cookies but you put too much cinnamon in it because you're TOO EXCITED BECAUSE IT'S FALL.
If there was only one thing I would choose as the worst aspect of this beautiful season, it’s the fact that it’s also red season. It’s in the red season that the heartbroken live on a different land from the rest. The world moves on a different axis for us. Time plays at different speeds, and goes at different directions. Imagining our future puts us on a tailspin, running headlong towards our past. To your once-favorite person driving a bright, shiny new Masarati down a dead end street, almost too fast for either of you to notice the traffic lights that he couldn’t see anyway because he was looking over at you. At the wind in your hair, and the autumn leaves falling down around you like pieces into place, framing an image that you’ll both picture, long after those days have passed and the magic has vanished. After there’s nothing else you can do to cast a new spell.
It takes you to your 22nd birthday, falling in love with strangers that’ll lead you down a treacherous slope. But you don’t even care, because it just feels like one of those nights and you’re turning 22 tonight and you’re happy free confused and lonely at the same time and you just want to feel something again. Even if the fear comes creeping in later that everything was unrequited and you’ll kick yourself for it, despite the fact that you knew he was trouble when he walked in. It’s the devil-may-care rebelliousness of it all that thrilled you to begin with.
It takes you back to that sad, beautiful, tragic cycle of rebounds and rekindling. Those memories that come along suddenly and take you away to that state of grace, that first-glance feeling, those reasons you fell in love to begin with. Those reasons that make you miss him like it was the very first night. And so you dance. You dance for everything you’ve been through. But you aren’t dancing unless he’s with you, so when he comes back asking if you want to try this thing again, you say yes. But then he forgets your birthday after he said he’d be there, and in that moment the things that caused everything to crumble the first time strike again, and you call things back off. So on and so forth, until he calls up yet again only so he can try to break you like a promise, and you get fed up and declare once and for all that the two of you are never ever getting back together. …Like, ever.
It takes you back to remembering, but also leads you to a rebirth. You remember everything that happened, down to the detail. You remember the autumn leaves and how they fell into place. You remember how that first fall of snow glistened in the air. You remember every putdown, every light of gas, every little detail. It makes you become shell-shocked when somebody new comes into your life one Wednesday and proves himself to be the total opposite of what you’ve grown accustomed to. It’s such a jarring juxtaposition for you—you assumed he’d be late, but he was there at the café before you. He walks you inside and pulls out your chair for you, something he doesn’t think twice about but something that you deem incredibly noteworthy for how kind of a gesture it was. He thinks you’re funny, which you find strange because that’s not something you’ve been told before. You’re coming off shy and he doesn’t get that it’s because of the way you’ve been treated before. As the day wears on, you realize that everything has changed. You stop wanting to bring up the past, letting it finally become the past. After so many months of watching love break and burn and end, you’re now watching it begin again.
So yeah, it’s definitely something terrible about the autumn season, at least at first. But before you know it, it’s also something special. For all the slow endings, there are beautiful beginnings. For all the grief, for all the paralyzing vulnerability, for all the hopelessness and misery, comes a newfound strength…which will eventually lead you to the golden age. An age of something good, something right, something real.
It’s miserable. It’s magical. It’s Red.
