#30Jean-Jacques Burnel – We Were Lovers Gankutsuou OP
Points: 75 SD: 6.24 (4th lowest)
Zach – 10 samo🦕 – 13 willapted33 – 14 Taiga – 22 reputainbow – 23 khan – 26 esportsanime – 28 singingrulebritannia – 30Steel Sponge – 30@trilogy – 30wheatsquares33 – 30zippy – 30About the song/anime: K this is a pretty definitive last place and pretty easily my least favorite song here too, but I wanted to include it for two reasons. For one, I just think it’s fun that JJ Burnel (bassist & vocalist of UK punk/new wave band The Stranglers) has a contribution in anime music canon & I wanted to highlight that (and I like We Were Lovers more than the ED for this show, You Won’t See Me Coming, which he also performs. That song is camp though...not sure if would have done better or worse than this one lol). And for two, Gankutsuou is fuckin dope and I wanted to talk about it. This show is, in fact, a reimagining/adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo, a book that I had to read in high school and I figure a lot of other people did too. And it has one of the WILDEST visual aesthetics in an anime series. This show is 20 years old, but it still looks amazing. Well, to me at least, it’s sort of a love it or hate it visual style, but it’s so creative and unique (the way the textures are like static & the animation is around them if that makes sense?), maybe my favorite show of all time aesthetically. And it’s a great re-telling of the book too! I think there are even some changes to the narrative that improve some points in the book. Maybe has a bit of a slow start, but once it gets going it really gets going. It's a pretty classic thriller anime I highly recommend

#29Galneryus – Hunting for Your Dream Hunter x Hunter 2011 ED2
Points: 120 SD: 10.0 (4th highest)
Steel Sponge – 2 samo🦕 – 7 esportsanime – 17 Zach – 23 zippy – 23 singingrulebritannia – 25 Taiga – 26 wheatsquares33 – 26 khan – 29@trilogy – 29willapted33 – 30 reputainbow – 30 About the song/anime: Hunter x Hunter 2011 is one of the most popular & acclaimed shounen anime of the 2010s (maybe THE most). I don’t care much for battle shounen, and I’ve still watched this 148 episode series twice and it’s one of my all-time favorites (and Kurapika might be my all-time favorite character). It’s just, insanely good. Again, pretty popular show, you can buy a t-shirt at Target probably, I don’t need to talk about it too much, but it is one I recommend. That said, unfortunately the theme music of HxH is...ehh (but great soundtrack by Yoshihisa Hirano, one of my favorite composers). Bleach & Naruto have a better package when it comes to openings and endings. HxH just has one song as its opening—Departure (which is a solo track by Galneryus’s vocalist Masatoshi Ono, and I don’t care for it very much), so the endings are where most of the fun is to be had, and even then, I don’t love a lot of those either. The first ED Just Awake is def my favorite, but I kinda shyed away from that one cause there’s another Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas song I’d rather include (and I bet autotune screamo trance metal will finish pretty dead last most of the time no matter which song I pick). Galneryus are a pretty classic Japanese power metal band, and there aren’t enough rankdowns with power metal, so I went with Hunting for Your Dream here (and it does go hard). The other EDs are either not that great or I don’t remember them at all.

#28Asian Kung-Fu Generation - Dororo Dororo OP2
Points: 120 SD: 8.06 Taiga – 6 Steel Sponge – 19 esportsanime – 22 samo🦕 – 22 wheatsquares33 – 22 willapted33 – 23 khan – 24 @trilogy – 25 singingrulebritannia – 27 Zach – 27 reputainbow – 29 zippy – 29 About the song/anime: Asian Kung-Fu Generation are a pretty established rock act from Japan, both within the “anime music” space, as well as in the broader scene of relatively modern Japanese alt rock. They’re a band that’s just generally always good, so I wanted to include them here in some capacity. They’ve contributed a lot of great, classic songs to the anime canon, but are mainly associated with a handful of series that they’ve done a lot of music for, namely Naruto (whose second opening Haruka Kanata was in singingrulebritannia ’s Globetrotting V3) and Tatami Galaxy + its extended universe. Rewrite from FMA 2003, After Dark from Bleach (my personal fav), and Re:Re from Erased round out their most significant contributions to anime music, and, again all of these songs are genuine classics. But I decided to go with this Dororo opening for a couple reasons—for one, I haven’t seen Naruto, Bleach, or the original FMA, so those are off the table (and even if they WERE available, all those series have songs I’d rather have picked), and Tatami Galaxy & Erased will show up in later lists with different songs (I want to say Re:Re might be in an earlier RYM rankdown? Or maybe it was only released as a single in 2016 and just missed the list idr). So this was the only one I could’ve gone with, and that’s fine I think (even if any of the other songs I listed definitely would’ve done better here lol). Also, Dororo is a cool show, a 2019 adaptation of a classic Osamu Tezuka manga from the 60s that modernizes the series a bit, makes it a bit more grim and sleek. A solid action-adventure with good character writing & aesthetic, it’s one I’d generally recommend even though I was a bit bored with it at times.

#27Roselia – Brave Jewel BanG Dream! 2nd Season OP2
Points: 128 SD: 9.65 (6th highest) esportsanime – 5 Steel Sponge – 10 reputainbow – 18 singingrulebritannia – 24 wheatsquares33 – 25 samo🦕 – 25 zippy – 25 @trilogy – 26 khan – 28 willapted33 – 28 Taiga – 29 Zach – 30 About the song/anime: I’m about to talk about idol anime for way too long. So a lot of what I’ve been putting into this rankdown has been in service of me talking about cool anime that I like. I try to highlight stuff that I think is artistic, experimental, interesting, good especially (cause my taste mainly lies in weird anime anyway). But as much as I talk about weirdo arthouse animation here...I’m kinda just a big idol nerd these days. Idol shows are a dime a dozen, at least 2 or 3 times a year you can count on some “multi-media project” to pop up out of nowhere with an anime and mobile game with 40 characters in it, and then vanish completely within 6 months because there’s too many of the damned things & nobody plays all of them. But I watch basically all of these shows because sometimes you just need to watch an anime with 40 stupid boys or girls talking about singing and dancing for 12 episodes to feel good, you know? I am an expert in these things, it’s not something I’m proud of. The thing about idol shows is that they are, fundamentally based around music, they are singers and performers after all. But idol music is just kinda...bad and boring (imo)? Sure you have Snow Halation, which is a certified classic, maybe a couple other Love Live songs that set the bar high, but otherwise all these things sound EXACTLY the same, and I never care. I obsessively played UtaPri Shining Live cause Syo & Ai are cute, not because I appreciate their artistic output (sorry guys, I played on mute 90% of the time). But all that said, I feel like I had to put some sort of idol music here just or representation. While my heart does belong to boy idols (watch Idolish7), I think the girls are out there making better music. Now depending on how hardcore a nerd you’re talking to, you might hear that Bang Dream isn’t an “idol” series, they’re “girl bands”, they play their own instruments. And, sure, but they’re still from the same gacha hell as Love Live or Idolmaster, so close enough I think. Bang Dream is a fun series, I only played the game a little bit, but thoroughly enjoyed the anime (again, it’s not high art, the weird CG models take some time to get used to & the first season is bad, but once you get past all that, it’s actually very charming & funny). And Roselia are a good band! Aina Aiba is a good singer! I think Louder is my favorite song of theirs, but Brave Jewel was a proper opening (I’m not sure if Louder was ever featured in the show), so that’s the one I went with. These idol girls making symphonic metal is like, kinda dope right. Also, love the part in the bridge where all 5 vocalists come together & sing the last chorus together, like. That’s actually so dope.

#26Geinoh Yamashiro-gumi – Kaneda Akira OST
Points: 152 SD: 11.3 (HIGHEST)
My condolences, @trilogy @trilogy – 1 willapted33 – 2 singingrulebritannia – 3 Zach – 3 reputainbow – 8 esportsanime – 21 khan – 23 wheatsquares33 – 23 zippy – 26Taiga – 27 Steel Sponge – 28 samo🦕 – 30 About the song/anime Not surprised to see this one at such a high SD, but I think at least one soundtrack song a list is a good move. I don’t make it a habit to listen to actual soundtracks very often, but there are definitely specific soundtrack songs that stand out to me more significantly than others. And when I think of Akira, it’s always the establishing shots of Neo Tokyo with Kaneda playing in the background that comes to mind (I think that’s a scene in Akira at least, I haven’t watched it in like 7 years). Such a unique sounding song and a classic in anime movie soundtrack music. Akira is a movie that needs little introduction, it’s like THE anime movie of the 80s (the poster is absolutely iconic). All the dark, experimental grittiness of 80s freak cinema on full display here and it’s masterfully done. It’s a WEIRD movie to be as popular as it is too, but I’d still recommend it. Definitely need to read the manga as well, I think it’s often regarded as even better than the movie (but I don’t read a ton of manga, so I just haven’t gotten around to it). I actually don’t know too much about the act behind the soundtrack though—but from my research here, Geinoh Yamashirogumi was a musical collective with like hundreds of members active from the mid-70s to the early 90s. They have a few bolded albums on RYM too, guess I’ll have to check some of them out.

#25Bump of Chicken – Answer 3-gatsu no Lion OP1
Points: 157 SD: 9.38 (8th highest) Taiga – 2 samo🦕 – 2 khan – 11 wheatsquares33 – 17 Zach – 20 reputainbow – 21 singingrulebritannia – 22 zippy – 22 esportsanime – 25Steel Sponge – 26 @trilogy – 27 willapted33 – 29 About the song/anime: Bump of Chicken were one of the very first bands I learned about from an anime that got me into anime music significantly. Kekkai Sensen’s first opening Hello World is, to this day, one of my favorite anime openings of all time. Honestly, I could’ve included that one here, but for the sake of variety (I had Hello World in my failed 2019 list), I went with this 3-gatsu no Lion opening. BOC have been around the block contributing music to anime for the past decade or so, but I think that the series that they’re most often associated with is 3-gatsu, as they did the first opening and end theme for the series as well as a little music video promoting the manga from 2014 (before the show even aired). As for the show itself, 3-gatsu no Lion is absolutely stunning & a high recommend. It’s a bit of a hard sell as it is ostensibly about shogi (Japanese chess, to oversimplify a bit), a game that I’m not super interested in, but the drama, emotionality, storytelling, VISUALS (I think you could argue this is Shaft’s best looking show, and that says a lot) are all amazing. The first arc of season 1 and the first arc of season 2 remain some of my favorite arcs in anime to this day. It’s definitely a bit of a depressing watch at times, but if that kind of hard drama is something you’re interested in, it’s definitely worth a watch.

The ending is spectacular (one of the best endings for an anime in recent memory) and I think would really inform the show on a rewatch. If you’re interested in a complex drama comedy with an interconnected cast of furries as main characters give it a shot! The opening is great too. I’m not as up to speed with current anime openings as I was a few years ago (just between you and me, I'm on a big anime hiatus this year), but I’ve definitely noticed a trend towards chilled out lo-fi hip hop recently. And like, good. I’m glad that’s where anime openings are going these days, it’s a good vibe. I feel like Odd Taxi was one of the first to do it, and they kinda did it best too (very cute animation in the opening sequence as well). Don’t know much about Skirt & Punpee though, this is their only anime song. (apparently Punpee also has a song called My Name Is... which is not an Eminem cover, but is good)

#23Yui Makino – Euphoria Aria the Natural OP
Points: 163 SD: 7.28 (8th lowest) samo🦕 – 3 willapted33 – 11 reputainbow – 12 @trilogy – 13 Zach – 13 singingrulebritannia – 14 zippy – 17 khan – 21 wheatsquares33 – 21 Steel Sponge – 24 esportsanime – 27 Taiga – 28 About the song/anime At first, Euphoria wasn’t really an opening that stood out to me. I watched all 26 episodes of Aria the Natural and was like, yeah, it’s nice. But putting together this list, I was surprised by how obvious it was to me to include this one. It’s so chill, has a great downtempo beat and the softest, sweetest vocals, a very warm and comfy song to listen to. Good thing about this rankdown is that it’s helped me to rediscover songs that I didn’t even know I loved. Also, surprisingly, I think this is actually the only instance of a voice actor song on this list? I’m not overly familiar with Yui Makino honestly (she is the voice of one of my favorite Idolmaster girls though), but it looks like she has as many voice acting credits as she does theme song credits (which is...weird since she never really nabs big roles, and a lot of her theme songs are for shows where she didn’t even act). Point is, if you’re an anime voice actor, there’s an 85% chance you also have a music career, within or outside the anime bubble. Seiyuu on anime openings and endings is incredibly commonplace. Aria is a pretty good show! People REALLY love this series, and while I’m not one of them (I find it kinda dull more often than a huge fan would), I do really appreciate what this series does. Aria is pretty much the definitive iyashikei series (iyashikei being a subgenre of slice of life that can only be described as “shows about nothing”--the most low energy, chilled out, pleasant, plotless anime out there, mainly focused on worldbuilding & the characters’ day-to-day life). Really love the setting for this series—it follows 3 girls that are training to be gondoliers in Venice, but if Venice was literally a utopian civilization on Mars. So like, if you want to spend ~50 episodes with pastel girls on boats on Mars talking about the nature of life & living, it’s probably the only show out there that will give you that experience.

#22Chelmico – Easy Breezy Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!
Points: 164 SD: 7.35
My condolences, khan khan – 1 willapted33 – 13 singingrulebritannia – 15 Taiga – 16 reputainbow – 16 Zach – 16 zippy – 16 Steel Sponge – 17 @trilogy – 20 samo🦕 – 21 esportsanime – 29 wheatsquares33 – 29 About the song/anime: Tbh, I wasn’t too hot on Easy Breezy when I watched Eizouken. I remember this opening being pretty hot at the time, the weird posing & sketchy artstyle of the animation + the catchiness of the song led to a lot of memes & reinterpretations at the time ( this Canker sisters version being my favorite), but I thought the song was kinda annoying. But I don’t know, something clicked for me with this one recently—the weird fusion of ska and slide guitars and j-pop is really unique, and once you get used to the...unique vocal it is a pretty fun listen. I don’t know anything else by this band Chelmico (this is pretty much their only song that’s been in an anime), but I am interested in hearing more of their work. Eizouken itself is a very fun watch! This is one of the first shows to be produced by Masaaki Yuasa’s studio Science Saru, and its visuals are so creative and stunning throughout. Show is basically an exploration of creativity & artistry through the eyes of some weirdo nerds in high school, and I think for that premise, it’s very well done. This isn’t the last we’ll see of Masaaki Yuasa either, in this rankdown and ones to come. So let’s talk about him for a bit, I’d say he’s up there with guys like Kunihiko Ikuhara, Hiroyuki Imaishi & Akiyuki Shinbou as one of the most immediately recognizable anime directors of the past few decades. Yuasa’s work is always swimming with style. I’m not sure if you can pin one specific style to Yuasa’s work (compare Tatami Galaxy to Ping Pong to Kaiba), but he has this ability to craft an entire series around a singular, unique aesthetic that you’re guaranteed not to see literally anywhere else. Eizouken is a bit of a softer approach to the Yuasa style, definitely not as avant-garde as a Kaiba or Kemonozume, but it’s still a heavily visual show for what’s basically a slice-of-life comedy.

Your Name was an absolutely massive hit when it came out. Like, the biggest anime movie of the 2010s, and I don’t even know if it was particularly close. It was an EVENT. And I like the movie, I think I’m actually partial to Makoto Shinkai’s next feature length Weathering with You though. But Weathering with You didn’t have as iconic a soundtrack as Your Name, not even close. The Radwimps soundtrack for Your Name is essential to the film’s presentation in a lot of ways. Songs like Dream Lantern and Zenzenzense are perfect complements to the movies emotional high points, and they just work for the vibe of the movie as well. Might prefer Dream Lantern a bit, but I think it’s a bit short and Zenzenzense is just like, anthemic. It’s the song mostly associated with Your Name. I assume most of y’all are at least familiar with this movie, and I do recommend it, it’s good. It took awhile for Shinkai’s stuff to click for me, but he really hit his stride with this one (Garden of Words from slightly before Your Name is good too though).
