Will Dolly Parton’s ‘Rockstar’ Become Her First Ever No. 1 Album on the Billboard 200? In this week's The Contenders, Dolly Parton's Rockstar could become the first set in her nearly 60-year career to top the Billboard 200.

11/22/2023The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming Billboard 200 dated Dec. 2), Dolly Parton’s rock-themed new set is in the mix for the No. 1 spot, but faces competition from recent Drake and Taylor Swift blockbusters. Dolly Parton, Rockstar (Butterfly/Big Machine): When Dolly Parton was nominated for (and later inducted into) the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – despite a career mostly spent in country music and other rootsier genres – she was inspired to retroactively make good on her rock icon status by recording her first-ever full-length rock set. That album materialized on Friday with Rockstar, a 30-track affair that features the beloved singer-songwriter fully plugging into the genre, with a combination of covers and originals, and help from such legendary guests as Sting, Steven Tyler, Debbie Harry, Rob Halford, Elton John and of course goddaughter and frequent collaborator Miley Cyrus. While Rockstar may not be particularly massive on streaming – though having 30 total tracks to stream will certainly help with those totals – it is expected to sell very well. It’s of course helped by the months of buzz generated by Parton’s Rock Hall embrace and her subsequent genre pivot, but even more so by the album’s wide availability: It’s being sold in more than 10 vinyl variants, including exclusive editions for Walmart, Barnes & Noble, Target, indie stores and (appropriately) the Rock Hall’s webstore, and is even being sold at less-traditional retailers like Cracker Barrel, Dollar General and HSN. (She could also get a late-week boost in visibility this Thursday, when she performs at halftime of the NFL’s Thanksgiving showdown between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders, though that boost will most likely be limited to digital album sales and streaming services, due to most brick-and-mortar stores being closed on the holiday.) ) If all this adds up to enough sales for Rockstar to claim the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200, it would make for a benchmark moment in the country legend’s career: Despite visiting the chart 49 times – dating back to her first appearance in 1969 – Parton has yet to reach its apex, having only reached the top 10 twice. (She came closest in 1987, with the Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt team-up set Trio, and with 2014’s Blue Smoke, both of which reached No. 6.) Drake, For All the Dogs (OVO/Republic): Drake’s latest already topped the Billboard 200 upon its October debut, and it’s hung around the chart’s top five in the five weeks since. Next week, For All the Dogs should get another boost from the added attention and consumption resulting from the release of its new Scary Hours edition, which adds six extra cuts to the already-24-track set, including the J. Cole-featuring “Evil Ways.” As usual with Drake, the bonus songs are performing excellently on streaming, so Parton should beware of Dogs potentially securing an equivalent album unit total in the six digits, presenting a real challenge to her securing her first-ever No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Taylor Swift, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (Republic): Drake himself acknowledged Taylor Swift’s chart supremacy on his Scary Hours cut “Red Button,” calling her the “only one [who] could make me drop the album just a little later.” Swift’s latest (and biggest yet) blockbuster re-recording spent its first two weeks atop the Billboard 200, before falling to No. 2 behind Stray Kids’ Rock-Star on last week’s chart (dated Nov. 25). That sales-driven chart-topper will likely fall out of the mix for the top spot in its second week — but Swift’s should hang around, as the set continues to sell well, and several of her new Taylor’s Versions remain on the daily U.S. charts at the biggest DSPs. IN THE MIX
ENHYPEN, Orange Blood (Befit Lab/YG): South Korean pop group ENHYPEN has inched closer to the top of the Billboard 200 with each of their last three EPs, securing their highest position on the chart with May’s No. 4-debuting Dark Blood. They’ll have a shot to one-up that finish with last Friday’s six-track Orange Blood, which should post strong sales – helped by 12 collectible CD variants with branded merch inside, and exclusives for Barnes & Noble, Target and Walmart, as well as a webstore-exclusive digital edition with seven voice memos from the group members. 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne, Welcome 2 Collegrove (Def Jam/Gamebread): With six No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 between them, rap greats 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne team up for a second collaborative album with this month’s Welcome 2 Collegrove, follow-up to 2016’s No. 4-peaking Collegrove. The 21-track effort also features appearances from big names like Rick Ross, 21 Savage and Usher, and a signed CD of the set is available through the duo’s official webstore. Andre 3000, New Blue Sun (Epic/Sony): One of the late year’s most-discussed sets has been hip-hop legend Andre 3000’s ambient, rap-less set New Blue Sun, announced just a couple days before its release last Friday. Though as half of OutKast, Andre reached the top two of the Billboard 200 five times, New Blue Sun is not expected to stream enough to really make it a contender for the top spot (and is not yet available for physical purchase) — but it will almost certainly be the highest-ranking album of woodwind instrumentals on next week’s chart.

11/22/2023Drake, For All the Dogs (OVO/Republic): Drake’s latest already topped the Billboard 200 upon its October debut, and it’s hung around the chart’s top five in the five weeks since. Next week, For All the Dogs should get another boost from the added attention and consumption resulting from the release of its new Scary Hours edition, which adds six extra cuts to the already-24-track set, including the J. If the Spotify streaming totals are any indication, I don't think Drake will be able to block Dolly. As of Tuesday only three of the six "Scary Hours 3" songs, and only five of the other "For All the Dogs" songs, are in the Spotify Top 200. The positions on Apple Music are much higher, of course, but given that Dolly is predicted to outsell Drake by almost 130,000 units, I just don't see how Drake's streaming is going to be enough to give him the advantage over Dolly. And since Drake has already hit number 1 with "For All the Dogs," and has had 14 number one albums already...here's hoping I'm right!

I've given Dolly some paid Spotify streams tonight too. Hopefully she gets past Drake. I find it difficult to pull against her for him getting back to #1.

www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/drakes-for-all-the-dogs-returns-number-one-billboard-200-chart-scary-hours-deluxe-1235510532/Drake’s ‘For All the Dogs’ Back at No. 1 on Billboard 200 After ‘Scary Hours’ Deluxe ReleaseBy Keith Caulfield 11/26/2023 Plus: Dolly Parton earns her highest-charting album ever with the debut of "Rockstar" & ENHYPEN nabs its third top 10 with "Dark Blood." Drake’s For All the Dogs jumps back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (dated Dec. 2), for a second week atop the list, rising 4-1 with 145,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 23 (up 102%), according to Luminate. Nearly all of its units were driven by streaming activity. The album’s return to the top is fueled largely by its deluxe reissue on Nov. 17 with six new songs, dubbed For All the Dogs Scary Hours Edition. All versions of the album are combined for tracking and charting purposes. Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200, Dolly Parton achieves her highest-charting album ever — and third top 10 — as Rockstar opens at No. 3, while ENHYPEN logs its third top 10 with the No. 4 arrival of Orange Blood. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Dec. 2, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (Nov. 28). Of For All the Dogs’ 145,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Nov. 23, SEA units comprise 141,500 (up 99%, equaling 190.23 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 29 tracks, inclusive of its six added songs), album sales comprise 2,000 (up 884%) and TEA units comprise 1,500 (up 456%). Taylor Swift’s chart-topping 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is a non-mover at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, earning 138,000 equivalent album units (down 14%). Dolly Parton’s Rockstar makes a splashy debut at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, scoring the legend her highest-charting album ever and her third top 10. She previously visited the region with Blue Smoke (No. 6 in 2014) and Trio (her collaborative set with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris; No. 6 in 1987). Rockstar launches with 128,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Nov. 23. Of that sum, album sales comprise 118,500, SEA units comprise 8,000 and TEA units comprise 1,500. The arrival marks Parton’s biggest week, by units earned, since the chart began measuring by units in December 2014. Further, with 118,500 copies sold, Parton achieves her biggest sales week for an album in the modern era, since Luminate began electronically tracking sales in 1991. She more than doubles her previous biggest week, notched in 1993 when Slow Dancing With the Moon sold 50,500 copies in its second week on the chart (rising 54-19 on the March 20, 1993-dated list). The star-studded Rockstar was promoted as Parton’s first rock album (she’s primarily released country music in her nearly 60-year career), and its recording was sparked by Parton’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. The 30-song set has a mix of original songs and covers, and boasts a cavalcade of guest stars — 40 in all. Among them are Pat Benatar, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Elton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Chris Stapleton, Ringo Starr, Sting and Steven Tyler. Rockstar’s first-week sales were bolstered by its availability across a variety of editions and formats, in addition to some non-traditional music retailers including Cracker Barrel, Dollar General and HSN. The album’s CD edition was available in four editions — a standard version and three variants, each with alternative cover art: for HSN, with three bonus tracks; a Dallas Cowboys version, and a Tennessee Volunteers edition with a bonus track. The latter two were tied to a pair of high-profile live TV performances from Parton: during the Georgia Bulldogs vs. Tennessee Volunteers football game on Nov. 19, and during halftime of the Washington Commanders vs. Dallas Cowboys football game on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23). Rockstar was pressed on more than 10 vinyl variants, including exclusive editions (all in different colors, some with different cover art) for Amazon, Barnes & Noble, independent record stores, Parton’s webstore, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame store, Target and Walmart. Parton’s webstore also carried a deluxe digital download version of the album with three exclusive bonus tracks. Rockstar was also offered in multiple deluxe boxed sets, sold through Parton’s webstore, containing either a vinyl or CD version of the album with a branded T-shirt of various designs. ENHYPEN nabs its third top 10-charting effort on the Billboard 200 as Orange Blood bows at No. 4 with 90,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 87,000, SEA units comprise 3,000 (equaling 4.68 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. The Korean pop ensemble previously hit the top 10 with Dark Blood (No. 4, in June) and Manifesto: Day 1 (No. 6, 2022). Nearly all of Orange Blood’s first-week activity was generated by CD sales (86,000), enhanced by the album’s availability across a dozen collectible CD packages (including exclusive versions sold by Barnes & Noble, Target and Walmart; all with branded merchandise inside, some with randomized elements). The top 10 of the Billboard 200 is rounded out by six former No. 1s: Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time is steady at No. 5 (68,000 equivalent album units earned; down less than 1%); Taylor Swift’s Midnights rises 7-6 (56,000; up 9%); Stray Kids’ ROCK-STAR falls 1-7 in its second week (51,000; down 77%); Taylor Swift’s Lover bolts 14-8 (nearly 51,000; up 16%); Taylor Swift’s Folklore climbs 18-9 (45,000; up 22%); and SZA’s SOS bumps 12-10 (44,000; up less than 1%). (Many albums on the chart, including Swift’s Midnights, Lover and Folklore, see sizable sales gains owed to holiday shopping promotions and early Black Friday campaigns that kicked in during the tracking week.) Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published.

I'm kind of glad it wasn't close, and that Dolly ended up at number 3, since it's not like Drake or Taylor blocked her or that a few more sales or streams would have made the difference. And it's not like the fact that Drake has an album with 29 tracks gave him an unfair streaming advantage, since Dolly had 30. Maybe we can argue about the way streaming is weighed but that's a Billboard issue. Still it seems weird that an album can sell 118,500 units - enough to top the charts many if not most weeks in the pre-streaming Soundscan years between 1991 and 2014 - and only peak at #3.

Congrats to Drake! I was rooting for Dolly though. I love Drake, Taylor and Dolly! It is just that Dolly at age 77 would have had her first#1. Cher's last album came close to entering the Top 200 at #1 but 2 last minute rap album drops held Cher back at #3. Cher sold more physical copies, but her streams were tiny compared to those 2 rappers. Oh well, at least artists like Dolly and Cher have successful careers going back to the 1960's. I think Drake and Taylor will be like Cher and Dolly and have 60+ year (and counting) careers.

I was definitely pulling FOR Dolly & AGAINST Drake. But then again I was also pulling FOR Auburn & AGAINST bama. So obviously I didn't win in either of these weekend's battles.

Dolly Parton’s Rockstar blasts in at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Dec. 2), scoring the music legend her first leader on the 32-year-old tally. Rockstar bows with 118,500 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 23, according to Luminate. That marks biggest sales week for an album in the modern era, since Luminate began electronically tracking sales in 1991. She more than doubles her previous biggest week, notched in 1993 when Slow Dancing With the Moon sold 50,500 copies in its second week on the chart (rising 54-19 on the March 20, 1993-dated list). Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. The new Dec. 2, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Nov. 28. As previously reported, Rockstar also debuts at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 – Parton’s highest charting album ever, and her third top 10 on that list. Of Rockstar’s first-week sales of 118,500, physical sales comprise a little more than 96,000 ( 78,000 on CD, 18,000 on vinyl and a negligible sum on cassette) and download album sales comprise a little over 22,000.The star-studded Rockstar was promoted as Parton’s first rock album, and its recording was sparked by Parton’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Parton has primarily released country music in her nearly 60-year career, through has taken detours (with albums and/or songs) into such genres as Americana/folk, bluegrass, children’s music, Christian, dance/electronic and pop. The 30-song Rockstar set has a mix of original songs and covers, and boasts a cavalcade of guest stars – 40 in all. Among them are Pat Benatar, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Elton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Chris Stapleton, Ringo Starr, Sting and Steven Tyler. ^I'm surprised at the proportion of Rockport's sales that where digital album sales. I would have thought that proportion would have been much lower. Also, I would have expected it to sell more vinyls than CDs.

Also, I would have expected it to sell more vinyls than CDs. It has a lengthy digital pre-order period (starting from ACM Awards in May). Alao given the major target of the CD selling places versus versions of vinyls which are more of Gen-Z things, it is not too surprising that she sells more CDs than vinyls.

No predictions out yet for next week, either through HITS or Billboard. I wonder if Dolly will have any sort of longevity? It's being generally well-received, and it might act sort of as counter-programming to the Holiday fare, the type of album that older audiences would buy during the busy shopping season. It might not rise to #1 or anything, but hopefully it will stick around a little bit and not exactly freefall.

Plus: Half of the top 10 are Taylor Swift titles, Dolly Parton debuts at No. 1, and Cher's Christmas vaults 23-10.
ENHYPEN score their sixth top 10 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Dec. 2), as the Korean pop ensemble’s Orange Blood bows at No. 2. The set sold 87,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 23, according to Luminate.
Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, Dolly Parton notches her first No. 1 on the 32-year-old list with the arrival of Rockstar; Taylor Swift has half of the top 10 thanks to sale pricing and promotions for Black Friday, and Cher’s Christmas vaults 23-10 after its release on vinyl.
For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of the 87,000 copies sold of Orange Blood, physical sales comprise 86,000 (all on CD) and digital download album sales comprise 1,000. Its sales were bolstered by its availability across a dozen collectible CD packages (including exclusive versions sold by Barnes & Noble, Target and Walmart; all with branded merchandise inside, some with randomized elements). As previously reported, Parton’s Rockstar rules Top Album Sales with her biggest sales week of the modern era (since Luminate began electronically tracking sales in 1991), with 118,500 copies sold. Its sales were enhanced by a variety of iterations available on vinyl and CD. Swift has half of the top 10 on Top Album Sales for a third time, thanks to sale pricing and promotions previewing the Black Friday shopping holiday on Nov. 24. (Swift previously had five of the top 10 on the Nov. 11-dated list, and six of the top 10 on the July 22-dated chart.) On the latest Top Album Sales ranking, Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) falls 2-3 (64,000; down 7%), Folklore jumps 14-6 (20,000; up 77%), Midnights rallies 11-7 (19,000; up 57%), Lover leaps 16-8 (18,000; up 80%) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) shoots 15-9 (17,000; up 72%). All are former No. 1s on the tally. Stray Kids’ ROCK-STAR falls 1-4 in its second week on Top Album Sales, selling 46,000 copies (down 78%). Jung Kook’s chart-topping Golden dips 4-5 with 20,000 sold (down 42%). Rounding out the top 10 is Cher’s Christmas, which returns to the region, zipping 23-10 with 14,000 sold (up 82%) following the set’s release on vinyl on Nov. 17. It sold a little over 6,000 copies on vinyl. Christmas debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the Nov. 4-dated chart. In the week ending Nov. 23, there were 2.34 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 1.7% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.98 million (up 2.6%) and digital albums comprised 361,000 (down 3.1%). There were 923,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Nov. 23 (down 3.4% week-over-week) and 1.046 million vinyl albums sold (up 8.6%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 31.921 million (up 2.9% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 41.441 million (up 17.1%). Overall year-to-date album sales total 90.474 million (up 6.1% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 73.857 million (up 10.4%) and digital album sales total 16.617 million (down 9.4%).

Thanks for posting the charts, Gary.
I had not looked at last week's Billboard 200, so I didn't see that Cher's holiday album re-entered. A 119-position gain is very nice. Why the discrepancy with HITS, though, for this week? It was 42 there.

^Looking at Cher's album pure sale numbers according to the Billboard article, the discrepancy was due to HITS projecting 16,700 vs 14,000 reported. The discrepancy was not quite as large as for Dolly's album.

^Thanks; makes sense. The album should hang around some, given the promotion and Christmas season kicking in.
