#3 - This is probably the song on this list where my hatred is the most "personal". Not to the point wher eit actively made my life worse of course. But probably the one that gave me the most bad moments or i spent the most time hating. And while it's kind of a cliche to hate a song mostly for overplay (which isn't exactly the case) i'd be lying if overplay wasn't the deciding factor as to why this is this high...
Seven by Jungkook and Latto Having to hear this on the radio so many times for months on end was torture in the worst possible way. A song that just grew more irritating with every listen, to the point where it surpassed many songs i initially thought were worse. And it's not that i hate BTS either - i had my stan phase for them around 2019-2021, and 3D was a much better follow up single that really should've been the hit over this, hell i even liked Standing Next To You! But there's just something about this that just felt agressively annoying even before the overplay kicked in. Whether it'd be the beat that sounds like a cheap imitation of the faster percussion NewJeans have been using, hell it sounds like something they would've probably rejected, especially with those synths. Jungkook's vocals, where even if i don't think he's a bad vocalist at all, it seems like the filters and processing were delibirately trying to make him sound as obnoxious as possible - which fits once you consider the lyrical content - especially as the multitracking kicks in during the 2nd chorus to further the headache. Seriously i could fill out an entire worst 2 seconds of pop music list with just vocal moments from this song, ntm the production! And while Latto comes in as a slight reprieve and delivers a ok verse, it feels tacked on cause they needed a rapper somehow, and her parts have practically no connection with Jungkook's besides tenous references to the song title (which gives her the perfect excuse to drop a reference to her own biggest hit) and to the days of the week. And that makes it so that her verse feels pointless and doesn't make the song any better either - a lot like JID on Enemy. And y'know if i'm making a comparison to THAT trainwreck you know you have something awful in your hands. And again, imagine having to hear something like that on the radio every day for weeks, and then you'll see why i put this so high. I never want to hear this again, even if part of me thinks i still will have to, ugh...

#2 - I've gone pretty far into this list without mentioning a certain mulleted Tennessee man who was the biggest chart presence of the year, a certain guy who is pretty widely hated in this circle. So let me rectify that, shall i? Morgan Wallen (Ain't That Some, Thinkin Bout Me, and I Wrote The Book) Look, even if i pretty virulently condemned Morgan last year while i praised Sand In My Boots as a great song (which it still is) i realized fairly quickly into this year (once he announced the 36 song album) that using that line of thinking as a excuse to not listen to this guy, it had practically become moot. I had to whether i liked it or not, so effectively i decided to listen to whatever he made this year that looked like it'd become a hit or atleast come close. And if i liked one of his songs, i had to live with that. And while that line of thinking forced me to run through 13 songs from him this year (8 of which made the year-end, though 1 was for a RD *wink wink*), i will admit i liked more songs than i didn't. Last Drive Down Main, Everything I Love, the title track, Thought You Should Know, Man Made A Bar, 98 Braves, hell even Sunrise and Last Night i liked, even if just a little.
But Morgan has always been an artist with a incredibly mixed output, especially quality wise. And given he won't give up on the trap-country schtick, we got 5 songs from him this year in that vein (or more if you actually listened to the album). And while You Proof won't be included as it already made last year's year-end (it would easily make a worst of 2022 list from me) and Cowgirls won't be included cause it missed the year-end (though if Morgan does push it as a single next year and it makes the year-end it would be very high on my worst list), that still leaves 3 songs from him to talk about, so let's start with...
Ain't That Some - this is the first one more because it's closer to a boring slog than the other 2, hell calling this "trap-country" isn't exactly fair either cause there's barely any trap percussion in this. Hell it's fair to say there's barely any instrumentation in this at all, besides a stale drum machine that still breaks through against the almost non-existent guitars and the hazy sound effects. Beyond that we just get Morgan Wallen acknowledging how cliche it is to sing about some cliche country tropes but that's just the way it is where he lives against some of his most annoying braying to date. Other than that the lyrics are barely worth mentioning or even worth trying to understand, next!
Thinkin Bout Me - of all the songs to make the big fan favorite after the album drops, that then sticks around forever after getting a Nashville radio push, why did it have to be THIS? Yeah it does make some sense given how big You Proof was, but that doesn't make the song itself any better, hell it might even be slightly worse than You Proof! Basically take Ain't That Some but then make the almost non-existent instrumentation on that song perfunctory as you swamp everything out with some of the stalest trap percussion ever that wouldn't have sounded out of place on Seven! And then replace the lyrics from barely comprehensible southern living habits to "you're still thinking about me even if you're already in a new relationship" bullshit that's just plainly gross, and kinda reflects more badly on Morgan than the girl. Look dude, she's plainly moved on from you and has a new partner, even if you haven't moved on (which you'll try to deny but this song proves you haven't) just let her be!
I Wrote The Book - The fact this is my least favorite of all of the Morgan songs, and might be my least favorite song from him ever (besides Broadway Girls) may seem a little odd from face value. And i do admit that isn’t a unfounded feeling. It certainly doesn’t have reprehensible lyrical content like Thinkin Bout Me did. It’s more a song where while Morgan has wrote books (not literal ones) about certain life habits he does well in, when it comes to reading a book he didn’t write (implied to be the Bible) he doesn’t do that cause, well, it’s a book he didn’t write! And apparently that was enough to cost him his relationship with a girl? Though he does admit that he should probably read the bible at some point? Odd concept for a song but that could work even as the drum machine swamps out everything... and then the chorus hits and any chance for this song to be passable or even just mediocre just vanishes out of existence. As we get Morgan Wallen yelping over trap percussion and my god he sounds awful! The autotune and overbearing twang just mash into this hellishly annoying mess that is veritable ear torture and makes it sound like Morgan is screaming instead of actually singing! Hell the worst moment of the song, and what is possibly the worst vocal moment of the entire year, yes worse than Daylight’s second verse or any moment in Seven... is that moment in the first half of the final chorus where there’s nothing... but him yelling the lyrics out before the trap percussion slides in one final time. Way to cap off the worst vocal performance of the year Morgan!
So yeah even if Morgan did have his good moments this year, that is still juxtaposed with him continuing to dive down the barrel of trap-country until he reaches the absolute bottom. And if I Wrote The Book isn’t even the bottom of the barrel, i dread to think of what’s to come from Morgan in the coming years that could be worse. But speaking of that what is worse than Morgan Wallen trap-country? Well...

#1 - I mean, duh?
Try That In A Small Town by Jason Aldean No seriously, what more do you want me to say about this? This song has been dissected as thoroughly as Richmond was, except there is no redeeming qualities like a good initial sentiment or Oliver just being dumb and nothing else. What can i say about this that’s new? That the lyrics are literally threatening the folk who do crimes in cities to try that shit in a small town so that they can get killed? That unlike Oliver the right wing sloganeering is in full swing between the part about Aldean’s granddad or the not so subtle Proud Boys shoutout? That the entire song sounds like something pulled out of the 2000s post-grunge scene that Bailey Zimmerman would’ve rejected? That the electric guitars and claps aren’t painfully weak beyond the solo that’s copying off of a Michael Jackson song? Or the fact Aldean isn’t even trying for anthemic power and is just playing all of this completely straight with no subtext or other potential interpretations with all of the dourness he’s been feeding off for years? Or the fact his voice is not remotely strong enough to fit the threats he’s making? And that’s before i mention the video??? Yeah there are many, MANY good reasons as to why practically everyone is gonna name this as the Worst Hit of 2023. And the half dozen i just brought up probably doesn’t even make up a third of the reasons why people hate this, and for good reason. And given Aldean still is pushing singles, with his most recent being “Let Your Boys Be Country”, if we let him stick around after this, a LOT of people would have screwed up! So yeah this sucks!
And that’s both of my lists done. Again, took a lot longer than it probably should’ve, but i did have a odd amount of fun doing these lists even if making them took awhile. See y’all next year!
