I know that TTPD started very high but already the second track on the album dropping 56% on Saturday doesn't bode well for Sunday streams... I can see people cherrypicking their faves from the album and others will be soon forgotten (not by the most hardcore Swifties but more casual listeners).

Huh - the #1 song on Spotify rarely does over 3 million streams in a day. The entire top 9 is currently over 3 million. It'll take a few days to fully stabilize. It's not sustainable for any song to get streamed over 10 million times in one day.

But there’s no denying it’s stubborn to say that these flash in the pan top tens weren’t all that common on the chart before this decade. It’s not just a matter of “feels like.” I’m a chart nut, so I do analyze the charts, I’m just saying a peak should be more reflective again. And then of course there’s the more important factor of people actually knowing these hits years later. No one outside core Mallards or Swifties are going to know most of these Drake and Taylor “top tens” ever, let alone years later. So me saying “feels like a hit” isn’t just some emotional response, it’s a figure of speech for something factual in this instance. Also worth noting that pre-streaming there were a decent amount of flash in the pan #1s and top 10s. 1974 in particular was an absolute bloodbath. No idea what happened that year but most of the biggest drops used to be from that year. Biilboard's chart director at the time, Bill Wardlow, was notorious for setting a lot of arbitrary chart rules and for being VERY susceptable to wining and dining by record companies (check out the "Shadow Dancing"/"Baker Street" controversy). 1974 was the first year he held the position, so perhaps he changed some rules up that caused the big drops. I do know that later rule changes caused weird chart movements. I think around 1981-1982 he invented some rule that a song had to hold at a position before dropping, so you'd see weeks with a lot of songs holding their spots and then falling drastically the next week. Another factor might have been that back before Soundscan, record stores and radio stations would report their "charts" to Billboard, which would then use the data to compile the charts. That data was less than accurate. One thing many radio stations did (and this was back in the day when there was a limit on how many stations one company could own, so you didn't have the iHeart-style concentration you have now that determined playlists) was once a song peaked on their charts, especially at number one, it would disappear from their reported playlist completely, even though the station was still playing it. So the song wouldn't get any chart points for the Hot 100 even though in truth it was still being played. Once sales and airplay data became automated it became clear that records had a much longer life as hits than the Hot 100 generally indicated. But there were other perids - 1977-79, and 1983-1985, for instance - where the charts did have longer runs, and the Hot 100 did indeed reflect what was being sold and listened to. No one would say that the songs from "Saturday Night Fever" weren't enormous in early 1978, or those from "Thriller" in 1983.

The entire 1990s? What manipulation occurred for her debut singles? What manipulation occurred for "Dreamlover" to get to #1? If anything she was hurt in the early 1990s as Tommy cut supplies for "Can't Let Go," which possibly kept it from hitting #1. Additionally Mariah (more so her Sony team) was by no means the original pioneer. Chart tactics have been going on since at least the 1970s, and likely before. Please look into the "Shadow Dancing" and "Baker Street" controversy from 1978. Exactly, until 1996, Mariah was a massive force on US radio. Her first 11 #1s were all legitimate, ubiquitous pop, AC, rhythmic and urban radio hits, with phenomenal sales to boot, and that is reflected by her immaculate album sales during the first half of the 90s. Can’t Let Go was indeed on its way to hit #1 (#1 on pop, rhythmic, AC and urban radio) had its physical formats not been deleted to boost sales of the parent Emotions album. Sarting with 1997’s Honey, her dominance on pop radio slipped (Honey peaked at #10, My All at #18, Heartbreaker at #21 and TGIFY at #28). I always attributed this sudden loss of massive pop radio support to her separation from Tommy Mottola, but that’s an entirely different discussion. Still, fervent fan anticipation resulted in strong sales, and thus #1 Hot 100 peaks. It’s also worth noting that all those songs were legitimate, longevous non-pop radio hits that are remembered (and streamed) to this day (aside from TGIFY). Her only blatant chart manipulation was Loverboy, which received weak airplay across all formats and its 49-cent discount led to one of the few sales-fueled hits (#2) of 2001, at a time when physical single sales were almost dead in the US. Her post-2005 #1s were all legitimate, as TEOM produced some of the biggest US radio hits ever and 2008’s TMB was another proper #1, with healthy airplay and digital sales. Sorry for rambling, but I mentioned all this because I really feel it’s obvious most of Mariah’s #1s were “legitimate”. Yes, her late 90s chart-toppers enjoyed lesser pop airplay, but they were still big on other radio formats and thus not totally sales driven. TGIFY is her weakest #1 I’d say but still hit #22 on airplay alone (before the physical release). In any case, out of her 19 #1s, only 4 (Honey, My All, Heartbreaker and TGIF) were not big pop radio hits, and still enjoyed radio success on non-pop formats, so to call her a chart manipulator is a stretch, I’d say. On the contrary, I’d say she’s among the artists with the most legitimate, multi-format radio smashes in US chart history.

As for MBOBHFT and BDILH, I don't see the radio appeal there. I'm assuming her fans requested those songs specifically on the radio. Also, I was excited for Taylor's collaboration with Florence but I have to admit that I was underwhelmed. I was really hoping for a creative, melodic song that combined their vocals harmoniously and felt like their duet could result in a multi-format radio smash but the result was a bit more generic than I expected. Still, I'm glad that Taylor has collaborated with artists like Florence and Lana recently. I'm interested to see how she'll evolve sonically in the future. I'd like to see her make a truly off-the-wall, quirky sounding indie record eventually. I don't see them doing that with 'my boy' at all. I was just assuming, I don't really know what the fan favorites are tbh. I'm not even on twitter, so I don't really follow stan culture at all haha! Do you guys think MBOBHFT has radio potential? I personally don't see it but I might be wrong!

Honestly depending on how Fortnight does at radio I could see them folkloring this era and not doing more radio singles. Like, it will already be well on it's way to 3xPlatinum by the end of the week so it doesn't need extensive radio pushes.
But whenever I give it a few more spins I'll pay attention to the songs that are being singled out by some fans. For me it all sounded too samey but I think that's bound to happen with 31 songs with similar production.

Based on itunes, Spotify, TikTok, and YouTube, Broken Heart seems like the obvious next single.

While looking at the Billboard Hot 100 during the early 2000s, I've noticed that many songs on the Hot 100 during the Winter of 2002/2003 suddenly tanked during the December to January period. Several of these were 2002 peaks like "Dilemma," "Ganasta Lovin," "Sk8er Boi," and "Like I Love You," to name a few. They all appeared to have strong chart runs going into December but then abruptly started to drop like rocks. The same random drop occurred with the massive hits of the period like "Lose Yourself," which immediately fell to No. 9 after its 12 weeks at the top, and "Work It."
As a result, only three songs from 2002's Year End list repeated on the 2003 Year End list being the lowest amount of repeats since the 1992-1993 YEs. So, what exactly happened? Considering that radio controlled about 92% of the Hot 100 at the time was there some radio recalibration that led to this?

In three days, Taylor Swift has racked up 639,319,380 streams globally for The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology and has already knocked off Un Verano Sin Ti for the second best weekly debut in Spotify's history. She's not only likely to unseat Midnights from the top spot, she is on track to make history as the first artist to ever get 1 BILLION STREAMS in one week for one album

I’m real happy Posty is getting another number one, after Motley Crew I kind of figured his hit making days were done. Hopefully his next solo song smashes too

9 after its 12 weeks at the top, and "Work It." As a result, only three songs from 2002's Year End list repeated on the 2003 Year End list being the lowest amount of repeats since the 1992-1993 YEs. So, what exactly happened? Considering that radio controlled about 92% of the Hot 100 at the time was there some radio recalibration that led to this?
I'm not sure, in looking at the runs of the songs you mention, as well as others around that time, there isn't actually anything too unusual about them. Remember that at that time, chart runs were much shorter than they are now, and songs would often reach their peaks fairly quickly, stay at them for some time, and then drop fairly quickly as well. This would be especially true for R&B/Hip-Hop songs, as they tended to burst in popularity all at once from the radio formats that would play them, and pop songs as well that got most of their airplay from top 40 radio. The exception would be some of the bigger cross-format hits, such as certain rock, adult contemporary, and country songs, whose peaks at different airplay formats didn't always line up all at once.
In terms of Lose Yourself's #1 to #9 drop, which was specifically the week of 2-1-2003, that of course definitely stands out as an anomaly. It could have been a radio recalibration, but looking at other songs from the chart that week, none of them changed too drastically in position, so it could have just been a rare incident where it lost a ton of airplay and several other songs gained above it at the same time.

"LY" fell 2-10 on Hot 100 Airplay that week (losing 22 million impressions according to the Singles Minded column) and 14-21 on Hot 100 Singles Sales, so it had big drops on both components that week for some reason. It then fell 10-15 on Airplay the next chart, so it free fell for whatever reason.

Taylor's numbers are insane, absolutely. HOWEVER after listening to the whole album, the numbers seem really front loaded. I really don't see this having the staying power of Midnights, there's just zero hooks. I expect a pretty harsh drop off in streams next week. I'll probably regret saying that but we'll see lol Her Dawn FM era! His reputation era

She's definitely the first act where I feel like bloating your tracklist paid off. When DeRulo and Chris Brown did it was embarrassing and made little impact on their numbers overall.
Here I feel like she's turning what was probably gonna be a modest increase from Midnights into truly unprecedented numbers. No one is playing the game half as well as she is.

Mariah’s number one catalog on the hot 100 is insanely impressive in terms of how big overall all of them were, with the sole exception of TGIFY. Even when she started falling off on pop radio in the late 90s (which made sense with the Butterfly #1s given how R&B flavored they are), they were still huge on other major radio formats and sales longevity was still strong for them. I believe the vast majority of her #1s made a year end h100 top 20, except TGIFY and a couple others that crossed into two different years too much. That’s pretty crazy. The Beatles, Elvis, and Rih are all in pretty much the same boat among other artists with the most #1s in terms of the vast majority of them being legitimate smashes. That’s why it pains me to see someone like Drake joining them, since you can’t say the same about his list of chart toppers. Tbf, you can with his first 7 up through Toosie, but ever since it’s been like 6 fleeting #1s in a row and it’s annoying at this point. Taylor at least you mostly still can, except maybe Willow and the verdict is still out of course on Fortnight.

Taylor Swift is currently in her MCU Phase 3 era. Overexposed and releasing too much? Sure. But at the same time, every single project she's put out is one of the biggest releases either of that year or of that month. She's breaking records in music, film, concert attendance, awards wins, basically every avenue a singer can succeed in. Will we see the decline and she starts fading? Of course we will, nothing lasts forever. But like with the MCU whether you like it or not, it's still an unprecedented run with no other comparisons to any other modern act in entertainment right now. Appreciate it happening while it lasts. But where are fearless avengers who can save charts from her records. Right now potential contenders would rather play Poetic Justice than start a Civil War.
