Guilty As Sin? needs to be the next single. Nothing else screams radio hit due to structures or length (such as SHS or BDILH). None of the ballads on the album sound like anything that would be a hit in 2024. Realistically, unless it seems like it will be a hit, why bother releasing it at this stage
This album definitely feels very personal and more for the fans. Guilty As Sin sounds like the only song vague enough and with a strong enough hook I think to be a hit. Down Bad is great, but I just.. I can’t see it. It feels too long or something. I’d be on board with a SZA remix, though

Every single song #11-4 is falling right now. Obviously going to take awhile, but if this can just maintain consistent gains, we should be looking at a top 5 finish.

I’d be on board with a SZA remix, though GAS not being on the Eras setlist is a pretty good indicator that it won’t be a single, as most singles from Red onwards (minus the two Ed collabs, Me!, OOTW/New Romantics, and most bizarrely Is it Over Now) is included on the setlist. Because of that, I’m thinking BDILH or Down Bad are the most likely options for the next single. They could easily pare BDILH down to 4 minutes by cutting the song like they do on tour, or skipping from “vipers dressed in empaths clothing” to the pause before the “second bridge” (before the final chorus)

The several tracks to make top 50 did so because the label allowed the whole album to be played on radio during its initial release. Of all the songs to make top 50 on pop at that time, 'Down Bad' wasn't one of them. That initial burst of album activity died down after a couple of weeks, then 'Down Bad' started its run up the top 50. If it was merely that 'radio just wanted to play new Taylor', again - they had their pick of literally anything else. They could've stuck with one of the songs that already made top 50. They could've stuck with the one that specifically made top 40. They dropped all of those and then they picked something else - that being 'Down Bad'. No amount of revisionist history or wishful thinking can diminish its chart potential just because you don't (or don't want to) get it. It’s not revisionist history to say they desperately wanted to play new Taylor and Fortnight was far from the most radio ready song. It should have flown to #1 with her momentum, and it couldn’t even crack top 3. They were looking for anything else by her to play, and DB and Heart were the obvious choices given streaming. Hence why they played them. I’m sorry, but DB doesn’t have any more “hit” potential than this song. I’d stake my house on it. Sonically, it’s very much Fortnight’s cousin, so if that didn’t go over huge with the advantage of lead single and big feature momentum, what on earth gives DB the edge? It’s also (fittingly) a major downer lyrically, which aren’t always the easiest sells (again, Fortnight says hi). I would definitely agree with those saying GAS is the only actual viable hit option, but even then it’s grasping for straws really. TTPD is the epitome of the most mainstream artist imaginable releasing the most un-mainstream album. There are no smash hits on it, and the fact that it had a bigger advantage of momentum than any album in any of our lifetimes save for MAYBE 25 proves it. If there was an actual smash on the album, it would be a smash by now. Regardless of label choices, it would’ve Cruel Summer’d itself. This album’s momentum was way too huge for a smash to fall through the cracks, not possible.

While I agree TTPD doesn't have any, an album not having smash hits doesn't make it 'the most un-mainstream album'. But it also just doesn't matter in Taylor's case right now, she very clearly doesn't need radio or mammoth streaming numbers to shift album units.

And one more aside on Down Bad… why would a complete lyrical rehash of one of her biggest smashes that isn’t a fraction as catchy or mainstream be big (I Knew You Were Trouble)? She’s already filled that niche in her hit catalog.

I agree that “Guilty As Sin” is the best choice from the album to be a radio single. It’s not something that I think radio could clamour over but I think it has a nice enough vibe without being ‘too Taylor’ that people who are borderline sick of her would be cool with it while Taylor fans also would be too. I wouldn’t expect it to blow up the charts but I could see it being something that has a long life at radio with lots of recurrent/gold airplay. But if they wanted something that achieved a higher peak without an extended lifespan or a ton of radio support, I’d go with a video and push for “Down Bad” (as a remix with a feature) or “But daddy i love him” or “who’s afraid of little old me”.

I said Taylor was the most mainstream artist imaginable going into the era in terms of hit-maker and popularity status. In that sense, it’s about as anti mainstream as we could have expected.

I'm sorry... I'm losing track of the argument 'cause the goalposts keep moving. I thought we were arguing the merits of 'Down Bad' as a potential follow-up single to 'Fortnight' as opposed to this or anything else. Or at least that's where we started - where are we at now?

Looks like it's going to limp its way into Top 10 unless it collapses.

Get this to the top 10, then push "My Boy" as the next single. Then give me Rep TV.

Week 20 on the BB Hot 100 coming up. Not a bad run! 20 weeks on the Hot 100 is no longer easy.

Down Bad is such a flop, I swear. No idea where anyone thinks “chart hit!” when they hear that one. Probably because it has the best chorus on the album, it's perfect for fall, it was the best performing album track on release week. It's already gone top 2 Hot 100, so certainly not a flop in any regard.

You called it a big flop, which is inaccurate as it's at 300 million Spotify and peaked #2 Billboard as an album track.

"So High School" needs to be a single. Especially with football season starting back up.

I've thought for a while now that So High School would work well as the next and final single of the era. I really don't see any smashes left(even with a template of 32 songs lol), Down Bad I feel like would perform similarly to The Boy Is Mine by Ariana. I think it's better to go with a song that wasn't already popular when the album dropped, but does have a "fan fav" reception. Plus it's also included in the tour setlist, and could make for a fun video.

Honestly, I could see "So High School" working, especially given Travis's season has picked back up.

I could 100% see So High School working especially if she does an insanely cute music video with both her and Travis acting like high school kids, and releases all the cute merch for the video.
