I am expecting a video with this theme or literally a tour video, because "she can do it with a broken heart". But she also let "Cruel Summer" become her career hit and never gave it a video. So, who knows.

I honestly didn't want this as a single, it works better as a popular album track, for me. But it IS catchy and I think the GP wants tempo from her so if she has to ignore the obvious smash (MBOBHFT), then this is a fine alternative. 'Down Bad' feels like a lock for the third (likely final) single, so I will just keep enjoying MBOBHFT until it has its Cruel Summer moment in 2028.

I know music videos don't do much these days in terms of propelling a single forward, but am I the only one that misses a good music video with a good production budget?! I wanna see each song have an added layer, become another experience. I don't want a tour video or some live performance for this, I want a creative experience. Still, I guess I should resign to this most-likely being a tour mv given its subject matter if we're given a video at all (we were blessed with Midnights having 4). Bleh.

I miss the days when MTV and VH1 were ALL music videos.  Outside of the USA, you can still find MTV and VH1 and other stations that are all music video so in those markets, videos are a big deal.  I too love the visualization of a song.  Important to see this to connect with a song.

Taylor's usually pretty good about making videos for her official singles. Cruel Summer was not a planned single and also went #1 without one, which I think is the only reason we didn't get one.

^ Agreed. I most definitely have a certain kind of nostalgia for the YouTube music video era around the 2010s where a great music video could catapult a song and artist to a new heights, garnering billions of views in the process while becoming potentially culturally defining moments ("Look What You Made Me Do" for example). They were statements. Events. Would Teenage Dream, The Fame/The Fame Monster, or most of the huge eras of said time period we know and love have been as big and as iconic without the visual imagery supporting them? I don't think so. The music videos of Teenage Dream particularly helped that era become a culturally historic, nostalgic benchmark. Aside from what a good music video can do commercially, there's the added artistic element to it all which I value even more. I appreciate artists who still take videos seriously (Gaga for example) and view them as an overall integral extension of the artistic vision and story they're painting of an era/their career at the end of the day. Give me the dramaaa, give me the show!

Don't hate me for saying this but whenever she decides to collaborate with another music video director again is gonna be a good day. Her best directed video is, arguably, Anti-Hero and even then it's far from a career highlight for her. Kinda how I feel about her career right now: it's getting a bit... same-y. Shake it Off (heh) a bit and give us something unexpected and new.

I could not possibly disagree more! With no hate of course!

1. I don’t think taking over more control of your craft and then achieving wild success is any indicator to do something different or to hand any of that control back. 2. I much prefer the quality of her work from folklore on, which includes when she started directing videos.

I don’t personally get what the incentive would be to collaborate with another director at this point. For what? I think if she really wanted to give us something “unexpected” she could, when and if she wants to.

I think fortnight, and yes AH, as well as cardigan, are some of the best videos in her catalogue.

I think the fact that this has been consistently top 30 in streaming since the album dropped says otherwise. It outlived Down Bad and My Boy even though everyone claims those are the mega hits of the album.

‘Anti-Hero’ is easily her best self-directed video, outside of ATW10MV.

The rest of them are…cute! It would be nice to see what she could do collaborating with a big music video producer again but she just *needs* to be a director lol 👀

You make some valid points business-wise. I just meant creatively. There's nothing she's done that has the visual flair she achieved with Joseph Kahn (admittedly that collab ran dry too by the end of reputation. even if "Delicate" has a soft spot for me). Also might be my nostalgia goggles but "You Belong With Me"? "Love Story"? Iconic.

The director also doesn't necessarily dictate the content of the video or has final decision, especially on a TSwift project. I think there were solid ideas behind "Karma", "Anti-Hero" and even "Fortnight" that would have benefitted from some visual tweaks. Not that ultimately any of this means much... the music video is kind of a dying art? Youtube views cratered, music video channels have died, and you get way more return on your investment by doing a viral tiktok trend or dance these days, so it's alright for her to keep directing, financially, and it does give her an outlet to keep improving. It's just that anything after "The Man", save for "All Too Well" I wouldn't necessarily rank near some of her earlier gems.

Also pour one out for the good ol' tour video. She's had a few good ones like "Red" and "New Romantics". I don't think a second single from a major project deserves one, but honestly I kinda get the feeling it's not a priority, especially since she just had her (second? I believe it couldn't quite catch up at the end) biggest Hot 100 hit without a video.

I took wouldn't mind some variation so I would enjoy her working with video directors again just like I would love for her to branch out and work with Max Martin or some other music producers/songwriters for her next album, as I want a complete switch in sound (preferably more current).

Imagine a handful of TTPD tracks with his production... no one would be complaining about the 70 versions of the album lol.

Too expensive? That was an actual, legitimate reasoning? lol That's wild if true. And yeah, I feel a different producer would have given production to TTPD that could've highlighted the melodies/catchiness of a lot of the album better. I recently posted a "Fortnight" remix someone did that illustrated that point beautifully. Like, Jack has had his fair share at this point but it feels like they're joined at the hip unfortunately. :/
