Once she releases the song with 21 Savage it's over!

I just hope that whenever radio starts to stall this, her and her team are quick to drop it and have single #2 ready with good promo/playlisting. Because right now radio is all this has going for it.

Honestly one of the biggest missteps she could have taken, working with Luke and then choosing this song as the lead and then releasing a hyper-sexualized video that made no sense in the context of the theme of the song. Either she lost all touch with reality or she was contractually obligated to do it. But altogether a horrible look to start off her “comeback era”

If she's somehow contractually obligated then she needs to pay someone on her team to leak that lol. But they even did a whole ass promo article about how "she" "wanted" to go back to the people that made Teenage Dream.

Honestly it's a win! I didn't expect it to even chart once it fell off the Spotify chart. Thankfully she had radio and those signed vinyls! I think she'd chart with streaming alone. Also, it's weird I can't find WW on Digital Songs top 25 chart? Maybe that's the reason why she didn't debut at #57 like it was predicted.

Her career goes:
Teenage Dream: 4 huge hits, 2 big hits,
Prism: Frontloaded w/ 2 huge hits, further singles flop.
Witness: Flop.
Smile: Disaster
Going back to the producers who made Teenage Dream sounds like a good idea in theory but she needs to ditch the yes men who told her that Womans World isn't one of the crappiest hooks of 2024. Get a new A&R and a team that isn't stuck in 2016

I did not expect you could debut on the Hot 100 by being on the Spotify top 100 for a single day of the week if you had no other metrics supporting you. That's an eye-opener. lol

Get a new A&R and a team that isn't stuck in 2016 I think the problem is she’s trying to be way too formulaic. Teenage Dream was lightning in a bottle - especially for her. Some things are just a certain time and place. I don’t think most pop stars have ever successfully recreated the success of a past era or wanting to even do that. It seems creatively lazy. She should genuinely grow as an artist and good music should follow. It seemed like she evolved with Smile but it wasn’t successful. I don’t foresee any of her next releases being hits because she’s just not that girl anymore.

I do think she is either too out of touch and delusional or they’ve calculated the backlash and wasted this song to receive it.

I still like this song, but she’s not new anymore. How old is she now?? I believe 39. Isn’t that getting to the kiss of death from pop radio…. Maybe younger people don’t relate to her and her old fan base is getting older and not paying as much attention. My friends who probably liked Katy Perry 10-15 years ago are busy and not looking for her latest hit. I’m kind of surprised this has done as well as it has at radio..

Once she releases the song with 21 Savage it's over! Her career? I think it's a little too late for that at this point, LOL. We'll see, though. Gimme Gimme just sounds like a Kim Petras reject, which it probably is, but the TikTok girlies will probably bop.

What works against this point is the last three years are some of the most recognition I’ve seen radio give legacy acts. Beyonce got 3 tops 10. Britney got an 11 (I think). Pink got two top 20s . Eminem and usher got their biggest hits in a decade. Nicki racked up two hits . Justin got a moderate radio hit. Even Avril who has done nothing chart wise in 10 years got her latest singles to 26 and 22 (I think?) on pop radio without major deals. 40 doesn’t seem like the death kiss anymore. I’m sure it still exists but maybe it’s closer to 45

I’ve said this over and over again but the downfall of Katy Perry wasn’t her age or her audience growing up or any of that - it was that the quality of the musical output just continued to get worse and worse album by album.
TD? Full of timeless pop songs.
Prism? Lesser quality album cuts, but songs like ‘Dark Horse’ were some of her best. Radio treated them as such.
Witness? Even worse quality.
Smile? 😐
Look at the material.
I fully agree with the person who said she needs better A&R people. She had this era set up perfectly for her to come back in a big way and she’s fumbled the bag. That’s it.

Smile is a better album than Prism imo. Yup. There are songs on Smile (NRO, HIH, CAL, especially) that are better than some of the singles on TD. I actually like all of Smile.

With Smile, the problem wasn't quality itself, it was the disastrous strategy between NRO (a solid hit) and the album release. By the time album came out, everyone had forgotten about the campaign. It happened to Dua Lipa to a lesser extent this year. First DTN was a big summer hit, Houdini was a sizable hit starting November, she did some awards shows but the album wasn't out until May and didn't do much because the campaign was dragged for so long.
With 143, everything has gone wrong so far and the album is still two months away so it's not looking good, in fact, it's looking quite hopeless (commercially).

I’m still not willing to write off this era.
While I despise the origins of this song and its levels of tone-deafness, I still am excited for the era. I assume there are a lot of fans like me. I still think she can get a sizable hit and decent numbers for the album.
However. Admittedly, the longer she tries to promote this song and hold onto making this a hit, the more I am disliking her. If she hasn’t grasped the level of hate people have towards this song (and more importantly, why they hate it), and she doesn’t made a quick pivot, then frankly, she deserves this era to fail. This no longer is about her team. This is about her and her bad choices at a certain point. We’re quickly coming to that point.
Rumor has it she offered the song to Kamala’s team and they turned it down. If true, it’s again another level of “WTF”. How do they assume a presidential candidate would want to attach their name to a Dr Luke song about women? It’s like Katy and team are super focused on trying to make this song a hit even though it’s critically been panned universally.

I should have expanded in my last comment.
I agree Smile > Witness…but what was radio ready? Outside of NRO? *and* NRO was fantastic and what did radio do? Play it! NRO for Katy at the time was a hit.
When Katy releases quality, radio-ready material radio has shown they would play it. So I stand by her biggest obstacle being quality.
