Maybe Katy's Harley’s in Hawaii can be like Taylor's Cruel Summer. A song her fans push up the charts until it clicks. Harley’s in Hawaii really is such a great song.

Should be safe for top 20 now, but this is shoring up exactly the same way 'J Christ' did.

Ugh can we just re-release Harley’s in Hawaii, please? 🥹 We should just re-release the entire Smile album with a different cover, different title and long dark hair because there are like 6 songs on it that deserved to be hits and the sound was way better for her than the electro-dance-faux urban snippets I've heard from 143

"Harleys in Hawaii" had two viral moments and still didn't chart in the US.
I think it's time to make peace with the fact that it's not meant to be a hit.

Whether moderate or minor is debatable, but the numbers are too solid to deem it a flop. It's at 530M on Spotify and comfortably outstreaming all her other post-Dark Horse singles except for Feels (which was a hit) daily. It's also certified in many big markets
And it wasn't even a full-fledged single. It was basically a droplet that was not promoted to radio and had limited playlist promotion. It found its own legs.

I never got the dislike for the “Smile” album. I really like most of it??? Unpopular opinion, but I loved the title track and mini stanned it when it was released.

You're not wrong but her team also did absolutely nothing. Even "Bloody Mary" which Gaga has never, IIRC, acknowledged it's resurgence, was sent to radio by the label and did alright.

The problem is that it was released the first year of the pandemic. I don’t think anyone knew she had an album and she was on Idol so there’s not much of an excuse. I thought NRO and HIH were promo singles with no album while she was on Idol ala FourFiveSeconds, BBHMM from Rihanna. She’s had a string of bad decision making since the Dark Horse video, like someone else said. And that was more than a decade ago. It reeks of sabotage or the universe - either way something is not on her side.

She recreated the viral choreo on TikTok, and IIRC she mentioned it once in another social media post, but that was it.

I think "Harleys In Hawaii" is a good pop song no doubt (love it), but I also feel people over-hype it a bit (in commercial potential) due to the fact it was sandwiched between a lot of middling material and had a sleeker, sexier vibe/image in direct opposition of the cringe clown aesthetic we were getting for most of the Smile era. I do think it could have been more successful, had it directly followed "Never Really Over", but if "Never Really Over" couldn't hit it out the park being the much superior song, I can't see a performance or promo making "Harleys" fair any better. I just don't think the public were quite ready for her return at that point, no matter how good the material. If I were championing any song to have a resurgence it would be "Never Really Over", as it deserved to be another #1 for her. Yes I know it peformed well considering , but it deserved all the flowers.

I believe it outperformed Fortnight in comparison to Payola to Spins average, so that’s a win for KP.

So what will the peak for this on the Hot 100 be?
And I have a question, why do so many people on this board think FOR SURE that Katy has a hit left in her? Her moment is over and done. Even if she had a fantastic lead-off single to this, I can’t imagine it would have been a smash hit. A bunch of people also think Kesha is still going to have a comeback hit, but these things aren’t going to happen. It is almost 2025. 2012 was a long time away.

Who cares if they don’t. They are still allowed to release music. Madonna just had a sizable hit with Popular at the age of 65, so anything can happen.

Exactly. If these women who are older than Katy, still caught hits cause of going viral, who's to say she can't catch one?

Personally I don't put Kesha or Katy anywhere near the same breath. I absolutely think Katy has some hits in her. This whole thing was mismanaged. But from the clips we've heard, there are some really bangers on it. I think the general public just didn't connect with this but with the right song I think she can have a decent smash. Maybe not levels of TD but I would not be shocked to see something else stick from this era.

That's The Weeknd's song, who is a top 3 artist on the planet popularity wise. Hardly counts when she's a feature with co-lead credit

Should it not count for Playboi Carti, either? Does Feels count for Katy?

Just look at her TikTok comments before she started teasing this song. Everyone is saying how they were ready for her to comeback and save pop music. The comments have tens of thousands of likes alone. There was clear hype and interest for her new era, but as soon as this was teased all of it went away.

A strong lead would have been a big hit for Katy here imo. The hype was there.
Also saying Kesha won’t have more hits is interesting considering the traction her new single has picked up.

I think this song will be licensed a lot for commercials/ cutscenes in tv shows / movie trailers in the years to come.

Charli XCX literally struggled to enter the Hot 100 since 2014, she finally did it last year thanks to the Barbie soundtrack, and this year she has one of the most talked-about albums and 360 is on pace to become her first top 40 song since Boom Clap, Apple is predicted to enter at #81, Girl, So Confusing already charted. You never know with these things, I mean Miley scored one of the biggest hits of all-time with Flowers, ten years after her peak.

Agree, she (and everyone else) still has potential, but I must say no one has self-sabotaged the potential like Katy.

The gay campground I go to is definitely trying to make Woman's World happen. I heard it at least 5 times this weekend. I didn't notice too much reaction to it either positive or negative.

I mean, it would probably be wise to pull this in favor of something else but who knows. Maybe they wait too long to see how it does and then end up with no hit a la the Radical Optimism singles that followed Houdini.
