For me TTPD is a dud because it's easily her worst album (and no sales can change my mind). She could have dropped any album and gotten the same if not better numbers. She's just that dominant right now.
Even sales wise I think it will slowly start to fall below her catalogue gems in a few months. She was basically just too huge to outright flop; there is no scenario in 2024 where Taylor Swift debuts with bad numbers. Even her "peers" (in the vaguest sense since no one is near her sales at all) like Olivia, Dua, Ariana and Billie have turned relative overperformances over previous albums thanks to the increased focus on collecting physicals, even if none of them ultimately match the legs of their previous projects (not sure about Ariana, she might ultimately outsell positions maybe)

I don't buy Taylor would clear say 5-6 million (which is very possible as we're approaching 4 milli right now) off hype alone and with a terrible album, especially during a time where it just as popular to hate Taylor as it is to celebrate her. IDC how big she is. It has to be hitting with a good amount of people to be pulling in the numbers it is, but we can just agree to disagree there. No matter how successful this era was, some people were always gonna say this album was "guarenteed success" because of her hype (which could literally be said for any and all of her releases the last few years) or any other reasoning to dismiss merits of the work itself, especially if they didn't like the album. I agree it was guaranteed a big opening, but it isn't guarenteed legs off hype alone. We'll see by this time next year just how well it did or didn't resonate, but I still feel it's gonna be another win all around (as IMO the album isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be).

After "Not Like Us" seemed like it might be on the decline a bit, it has really rebounded. I dig.

I would like to stay that TTPD is an absolute incredible album and is among her top tier work. I'd place it in her top 4 discography, and might be her most honest work. Just because there it isn't flooded with dance pop songs doesn't make it a dud. Lol

Great to see Billie holding on so well! Hopefully she'll manage to do 300k+ this week and maybe even do a career best first week.

Honestly it could stop selling today and never move another unit and still be a massive win. Give or take Morgan Wallen doing another album this year, she's locked for #1 year end.

^ What's interesting is that before TTPD, 1989 TV already seemed locked for #1 year-end! This way, she'll probably get #1 and #2.

Billie will drop an instrumental version now. By the time this all over she'll love variants.

Cowboy Carter had a huge first week streaming wise and hypewise and not is down to 5 million a day streaming wise. And we see fornight decreasing so it's to slow despite the hybe at the release. In contrast, TTPD as an album has had great streaming longevity so far. It will move more units on streaming than billie's new album. I don't think it will be considered one of her classic albums but that's a high bar. I bet it's long run longetivity will be more like speak now and reputation.

I don't think the album is a dud. It's more that fortnight is not looking like it will have much longevity at the end of the day and hit #1 due to hype. The question is how hard do they push the next singles and will any dominate radio like CD or AH

Of course the 31 song album is going to put up more streaming than Billie’s 10 song album. That is not a flex to mark how good the album is, that’s just naturally what happens with long ass albums hence why Morgan’s albums have never left the top of the 200.

I just noticed that "Flowers" had its 47th week at #1 on the AC chart this past week. What in fresh hell? LMAO! Unstoppable is #4, its 101st week on the chart lol I can definitely tell that’s the format of the station they play at my workplace lol, it’s definitely the least updated format and really just relies on older easy listening type hits

Beyonce's 27 song album is doing less than Cruel Summer on streaming. Long albums help with streaming but they aren't magic. If people don't like the songs, they stop listening to them and the higher number doesn't matter. It isn't as simple as long albums equals eternal top 10 placement. TTPD's fifth week outstreaming a brand new album by a megastar is another piece of proof that it's sticking around.

Beyonce's streaming is surprising to me given how ubiquitous love for her seems to be these days. Granted as a veteran artists I'm not expecting her to be at the top of streaming, but I would expect better numbers than what she's presenting. Cowboy Carter feels as if it came and went in a flash. Regardless, it will still be a "setup" if she doesn't take AOTY home come February in the eyes of some. 🤷♀️

I’m not denying the album is performing very well but TTPD is the size of two or three albums so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that there is a large asterisk as to why it’s streaming more than Billie’s. The fact that Billie is streaming this well on a 10-track album should be celebrated but of course no one can rain on blondie’s parade that apparently needs to last for as long as possible.

Unless she can somehow extend the era, with, say, a visual album, come Grammy time it will be ancient news. Also not looking forward to the thinkpieces about how she's about to be snubbed again.

Also not looking forward to the thinkpieces about how she's about to be snubbed again. You and me both. I don't think anyone is owed a Grammy, nor should anyone be gifted one as some consolation prize. Looking back through her catalog the only real case of snubbing that can be argued for Beyonce IMO is Lemonade. No other album she was nominated AOTY for were heads and shoulders above their competition to warrant the "snubbed" title in my opinion. I hate now it's become this unhealthy dynamic to where if she isn't awarded in the way her fans feel appropriate it's a scandal. Yet the same fans throwing rocks for Beyonce not winning are simultaneously arguing the Grammy's are meaningless because she hasn't won AOTY. Make it make sense.

Beyonces Grammy winningest years are still for when she was doing unacclaimed but smash hit poppy music back in the 2000s

Lemonade losing wasn't actually shocking or unwarranted to many people when she was competing with the fastest-selling album in history, hailed the greatest comeback and also was widely acclaimed (Adele's 25). Self-Titled was a genuine snub from AOTY. That album genuinely was a historical album AND the competition was lackluster. Aside from Self-Titled, all the other albums losing I can reasonably understand. But I mean when 24K Magic, Midnights, and Harry's House are worthy material even then I can see why people feel the way they do about her other albums also losing...

I didn't know Beyonce was nominated for AOTY and it's my favorite Beyonce album! Yeah now that most definitely was a snub! Now that you mention it I can see the case for Adele taking it over Lemonade that year, I guess I just feel Lemonade was just as deserving. I personally don't think Midnights was AOTY worthy IMO quality-wise. I wish she had broken that record with a stronger album because I think people are going to look back questionably at its win and she can't win again now or people will rage. 😂

Self titled losing its genre to Pharrell, and sam taking pop album and song and record, indicated it may have been fourth. I'm guessing third

I think Beyonce simply lost a young, active fanbase when she shifted to more mature music and less frequent releases with self titled. she still has a big fanbase just like other big veteran acts but they aren't that interested in her new music. They will give it a spin but not continue to support it. gp is still interested in her and will give her albums a listen but she needs proper smashes for them to keep on listening and texas and bms were in the end medium size ones. taylor release frequently and sticking in pop is why she is so dominant.

Im gonna say this: TTPD is pretty far from her worst album. It doesn’t have the massive duds of Reputation and it’s overall more consistent with higher highs than some of her other albums. But i’d struggle to say it’s up there with her best too, it’s nor a Folklore or a Speak Now.
As for it’s commercial longevity, imma be honest i’m surprised the album tracks have stuck around for this long. Having 11 songs in the top 50 in your 4th week + a similar amount in the bottom half is insane. Yeah i get saying it was built to do insane numbers given Taylor’s stature rn but it still feels ridiculous.
