Will likely be the big song off of Wicked. To the surprise of nobody considering who's on it.
And according to Hits Daily Double, this'll impact pop radio on November 26th so...this might be a hit.

Well... the spin threshold for top 40 is kinda on the low side right now so we'll see if this can outpeak 'Popular Song' but I don't know that it can go very far on radio at all.
(I have not listened to the movie version yet to be fair, but it's very much NOT a pop song so IDK how well it would fare regardless).

I refuse to listen to the movie version until tomorrow when I see it in theaters. But if it's anything like the Broadway version, then I don't see it doing super well on radio. Like, at best, a similar run to We Don't Talk About Bruno would be alright in my book. |

there have most likely been other non radio friendly songs from popular movies that have charted . Let It Go peaked at #47 with the original Idina Menzel version .

I wouldn't even go that far tbh (re: Bruno). Like, this could go top 40 off of early movie release hype and low spin threshold but 'Bruno' had a LOT of viral hype behind its Hot 100 performance (which if I recall is the reason it even got a radio push at all) that I don't see this matching because I don't see how this would have the same broad appeal that 'Bruno' did.
This will outdo 'Let It Go' on pop almost certainly, but LIG also had the AC formats somewhat onboard and I don't think this will have multi-format support going for it either because I don't see its Hot 100 performance being huge enough to force radio's hand the way 'Frozen' and 'Encanto' did.

the Hanging Tree song featuring Jennifer Lawrence peaked at #10 at Pop and that is not a typical radio hit.

'Defying Gravity' as presented in the stage show/movie is way too long and the full version loses too much context if you were to take out any of the dialogue or any parts of the song. On the other hand, a re-structured and re-worked contemporary version of the song DOES work, as there are a pop version by Idina Menzel and a rock version by Kerry Ellis that do it successfully.
That said though, while a pop/radio version of 'Defying Gravity' by Cynthia would absolutely be possible I can see why they would go with an Ariana song for the radio single because she's the one with a clear proven track record that would have sway with radio PD's.

Not sure this would work, firstly because she already released a version that interpolated this, "Popular Song," with Mika back in 2013 that flopped, and got no airplay (and that was a 'poppier,' more radio-friendly version lol). In fact, it was such a blip that a lot of people probably don't know about or remember it, which might help this original version being released, but many people will remember and I doubt they'd be interested in a re-tread of that. Additionally, the rare songs that become hits from musicals are usually newly written and/or not already well-known, which of course Popular isn't.

Obviously I could be wrong but I have to honestly say I’m a little surprised at the reactions in this thread.
This will smash, IMO. Again, will eat my shorts in two months when it barely cracks the top 30 and falls, but….
I mean this is a pop radio darling fresh off a huge hit releasing a fun pop-ish song to pop radio during a landmark movie release that people of all ages like.
Like, this could be a MASSIVE smash.

People seem to be more interested in Defying Gravity (I imagine Popular is only higher on spotify due to NMF playlisting) but if they were gonna send a song to radio it was this one. Still can't see it going too far but hey who knows

Alright, just got out of Wicked (which was great), so now I can make a good opinion on this song (I refused to listen to the soundtrack until I saw the movie)
Overall, good song. Most of the music in here is good.
I don't see this doing too well on radio since, like I said before, it feels a bit too broadway-ish for pop radio.
That said, I still think this could easily make top 30 based off the movie hype and Ariana's name recognition. Just gonna have to wait and see.

Agree. Lyrically it’s not a Christmas song. However, melodically it actually does kinda fit. If it becomes “Holiday adjacent” (like the Sound of Music) just because of the timing of the release, then it has a chance. A long shot, but stranger things have happened. I mean, the chorus and bridge are kinda catchy! |
