Biased by "I'm Not Okay," this is the next strongest song off the album and I'd known it was going to be their 2nd single for quite some time now. I've been charting it for about 20 weeks already.

Just now when I watched "An Honest Mistake" by the Bravery on Launch, I saw Gerard Way right afterward singing a song I was instantly familiar with. For a split second, I thought, "Wait, is this a third video for 'I'm Not Okay'?" And then I glanced to the left and saw "Helena" and I was elated. I had no idea the video was out. (I'm assuming just yesterday or today, becuz I totally would've seen it on Launch last weekend as much as I had the video player going.) To be blindsided with this as a surprise, random video was incredible. About the video: A choreographed funeral! All the footage is so well-shot, too. If "I'm Not Okay" was one of the 10 best videos of last year (I really oughta make my list now and find out for sure where it'd be), then "Helena" will definitely be one of my Top 10 favorite videos of '05. God, "Helena" is gonna make a considerable leap up my chart this week. (The scene in "INO(IP)" at the end where the jocks come down the hall and the one on the far right slams that kid into the locker never gets old. )

Awesome video, after hearing this song, I'm seriously contemplating buying the CD.

God, "Helena" is gonna make a considerable leap up my chart this week. "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" was my number 5 video of last year; awesome stuff. This will easily become one on the Top 10 vids of the year for me too. On account of the song, I think it's equally as good, if not better than their previous single. (On a side note, it's this week's #1 on my chart! Ha!)

(On a side note, it's this week's #1 on my chart! Ha!) It's #13 on mine. Once it takes off on radio, I have no doubt it will become a #1 on my chart. MTV2 premiere(s)/(d) it all day today, and tomorrow it will have already been on my personal chart for half a year. :o

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE Helena Producer(s): Howard Benson Writer(s): My Chemical Romance Publisher(s): Blow the Doors off the Jersey Shore Music (BMI) Genre: ROCK Label/Catalog Number: Reprise 101504 (CD promo) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: March 26, 2005
My Chemical Romance's "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" is one of this past year's undeniable rock success stories. The band's lead single from its major-label debut, "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)," was a top five track at modern rock, pushing the album past gold. "Helena," the album's first track, is even catchier than "I'm Not Okay." It's another pop-punk song that bursts with energy—even though it was written about singer Gerard Way's grandmother. The song's vocal harmonies and anthemic chorus almost guarantee that it will soon be closing the band's live shows. "Helena" just debuted on the modern chart and should carry My Chemical Romance well through the summer, when it will be a main attraction on the Vans Warped tour.—BT

Bands typically save their breakthrough hits for last (In this case, it would continue to be "I'm Not Okay") and likely because it's the first track on the record, they always play this one first. I'm not saying it'll always be first (probably not, once they put out a new record), but to assume it will soon be their show closer is questionable. The only thing making me entertain his idea at all right now is the fact that the last lines of the song (chorus) are "so long and goodnight." But unless this becomes a much bigger monster than "I'm Not Okay," it's unlikely to happen. Gerard's and Mikey's (the spectacled one) grandmother's name was Helen, but everyone called her Elena. Gerard just combined the two.

^ It was the closing song at the show my friend went to, which I also assumed was because of the "so long and good night" line.

From listening to 3 Cheers quite often since picking it up in November, I've bobbled around ideas for an MCR setlist in my head myself. It seems like their setlist would depend on if it's their show or someone else's. I can see their opening stints depending heavily on opening with "Helena" and closing with "I'm Not Okay," but it would seem like they would have more room to maneuver in their own shows, where I would expect "Helena" to be a more obvious closer. The thing is (to me at least) that there doesn't seem to be real obvious opener on that CD outside of "Helena." (Although I would love to see them start off a show by blasting into "Give 'Em Hell, Kid," and letting that segue into "Thanks for the Venom" or "It's Not a Fashion Statement, It's A F---ing Deathwish." I'm a big fan of bands who've got more original openers than the first two tracks off their new CD.)
Granted, as one frustrating lostprophets show proved, there doesn't neccesarily have to be any difference from an opening set and a headling set... at all.

For the record, my show opened with "Helena" and ended with "I'm Not Okay" as well.

Well, there's two ways of looking at it. You're looking at it one way -- that a good song being at #1 on TRL is good. I'm looking at it another way -- that this particular song being at #1 on TRL is a sign that MCR are slipping into the same "pop-punk, teenage girls go crazy for Gerard Way" hole as Good Charlotte and Simple Plan. I don't think they're quite as vulnerable to that yet -- but if "Helena" goes for pop adds....

Well, I found out on MTV news that "Sugar, We're Going Down" by Fall Out Boy was #1 on TRL before. This kind of makes me happy and sad at one point.
HAPPY PART: I wish I could use a time machine of just two months and tell my friend that not only is this way more mainstream than bands like Hot Hot Heat, QOTSA, etc., but they were #1 on TRL. That's a lot worse than being just on MTV. Besides, none of their songs were as sugary and I think it's unfair when these "scene" people tell others what to listen to, buy, etc.
SAD PART: There will be a million ripoffs of these bands to come and I bet it'll be more tedious than the post-grunge bands. I always thought of "emo" being to these days what "punk" and "grunge" were in their days. Sure, people viewed "the" bands as that, but when you think about it, that wasn't a subculture like this emo thing, particularly with "screamo" bands of late, who all use the same metaphors and have those long bangs put to the side, blah blah blah.
One big difference between FOB and MCR though is that MCR's image is a lot darker and so are their songs. They aren't anywhere as vulnerable as FOB in my opinion. This isn't quite as sugary.

But anyways, since Fall Out Boy has gone to number 1 on TRL, it went for adds soon after that. I'm thinking the same might happen to MCR...

That's true, and I was going to mention Fall Out Boy, but I didn't think/know they had gone to #1. They actually are going for pop adds with "SWGD". Generally, though, a rock band being on TRL is not good if they want to maintain rock credibility, unless there were like 7 or 8 rock bands on there. That would be a sign that the demographic for TRL is changing, and while they're obviously a long way removed from their "glory days" of 2001-02, that change hasn't happened yet.

Yeah I have to agree with the fact that TRL's demographic may be changing a bit. However, that still doesn't give them the right to show ancient videos in First Looks, Pre-RL's and what not. I saw a First Look for Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc." just about a week back and i'm like that video is so old already. Same goes for MCR and Hawthorne Heights.
