I was thinking about this the other day. Sure some of my favorites from the past made comebacks in 2004 such as:
Duran Duran, Teena Marie, Anita Baker, etc.
But, whose album did you buy because you loved their single? In other words, some artist that you never knew or liked before?
For me it was Gavin DeGraw. I normally don't buy a new artist's CD just like that (on one single).
I loved "I Don't Want To Be" enough to take a chance, and I was not disappointed in the album either.
With that being said, I would say that was my favorite single this past year.

Well, my favorite song to be released all year was "White Houses," but I already liked Vanessa Carlton.
I would say I took a chance with Fefe Dobson, but I bought her CD December of last year. However, "Everything" lasted into 2004, so I choose "Everything" by Fefe Dobson. The album was not a disappointment either.

The reason I asked the question that way is because if you're a fan of a particular artist, you are more than likely going to like/love the music that they put out.

"Pieces Of Me". Took a chance on that album and really liked it.
My favorite overall single was "Live Like You Were Dying", but I probably would have bought McGraw's album even if I hated the first single, so I didn't count that here.

Reba McEntire - "Somebody"
EDIT: That was my favorite single, but I bought a number of albums from new artists based on their singles. Gretchen Wilson at the beginning of the year and The Killers most recently. I know I'm forgetting a number of others.

My favorite single of the year was Switchfoot's "Dare You to Move". But to answer the original post, both the Lostprophets ("Last Train Home") and Breaking Benjamin ("So Cold") were artists who I bought CDs by after only one single. Both had previous albums whose singles I thought were okay, but not great. (In the Lostprophets' case, I actually bought their previous album as well.)

I bought Lindsay Lohan's Speak because I liked "Rumors" and "Symptoms of You" :)
But my favorite single of 2004 is TLC f/ Lil' Jon "Come Get Some", which I bought Now & Forever for.

"Raindrops Will Fall" by Tamyra Gray is the best single of the year from the best album of the year "The Dreamer".
