Matisyahu is a one-man independant Hasidic Jewish Reggae act out of New York. No really.
His song "King Without A Crown" has actually gotten some plays on a couple alternative stations recently and is doing well in Phoenix and Albany at the moment.
But we all know most alternative stations (or any other for that matter) won't have guts to touch this song. There's just no home for reggae on radio right now.

I've seen a couple of his commercials on MTV2, and it's pretty cool someone from his background (not that it's not possible or already happening) is taking up reaggae music.

It's okay, but I don't get the appeal.

I heard 3/4 of this on Alt Nation earlier this evening, and I liked it. It's religion based...but that was probably obvious.

KNDD is actually playing it right now, and it's been #1 on their People's Choice Countdown for the last few days. I've only heard it a few times, so I don't have too strong an opinion about it, but I think it's great. I could see him being this year's Lazy Boy if this catches on a little more.

Both the alternative stations here play this a lot and just about every time I hear this the DJ insists that really, he really is a Hasidic Jew that really is doing reggae. Umm... hearing that, and seeing that in the first post, am I missing something when I say, who cares? Are Jews not allowed to do reggae or something? Is reggae its own religion? I'm not trying to be sarcastic here, it just seems like an odd thing to bill him as and keep on saying over and over, to me it seems as ridiculous saying that as it would be, say, to hear things like "David Gray is a singer-songwriter that likes drinking orange juice... no really" every time they play a David Gray song, and I'm wondering if there's some significance behind that.

I guess they repeat it because not many people can picture a Jew singing reggae; I'm, guessing it's not all too common in the Jewish population?

Yeah, when people think of reggae, they think of a dreadlocked black guy from the Caribbean. So, the fact that this guy isn't the prescribed idea of a reggae artist is something people are going to take note of, for good or for bad. I mean, look at Snow. When he came out, everyone made a big deal out of that this was a white guy from Canada doing reggae. (Of course, it should be noted that there's Kardinal Offishall who's also from Canada and does reggae - but he's not white, plus he's never had an American hit I'm aware of)
So yeah, whenever there's an exception to the rule, people will always make a big deal out of it.

I heard the commerical for this on MTV2 as well. It sounds good! However, if this guy had a hit, it would be because of the gimmick which unfortunately.

I heard this a while back and liked it, although I tend to not embrace overtly religious songs.

Up to #56 on Alternative. If it keeps going, then this topic could cross over to the Alternative/Rock forum. ;)

I don't get where the **** this came from or why it's even on the Alternative chart. When I listened to it just now, I didn't hear any reason for any Alt PD to even consider spinning this song whatsoever.
I don't get it. ???

Why not? Alt. has played reggae before and this song has a little bit of a Sublime-y feel to it.

Yep, Reggae found more of a home on Alternative after Sublime and 311 took off. Some stations picked it up more than others, but it wasn't out of the question for some alternative stations to play a Bob Marley song every once in a while. This doesn't really hold true today, but it sort of explains why this song would go to alternative rather than another format.
And on a side note, I posted this 3 months ago, and I'm sort of sick of it. So the novelty does wear off.

Do you realize that without the emergence of reggae-influenced bands like The Police and The Clash, there probably wouldn't be an alternative chart to begin with? This particular song blows pretty hard, but to suggest that it has no place on alternative is ridiculous.

I was more implying the following: 1. The artist is someone I've never heard of in my life, and that's absolutely unheard of for someone to hit the Alternative chart that I haven't even read anything about yet.
2. His name is awkward to pronounce and I'm not even sure if I am correctly.
3. It's reggae, which isn't very common on today's Alternative chart, especially for an unknown artist with little to no advance buzz.
4. The song is live, as is the whole album.
5. This song isn't even that good and certainly doesn't seem good enough to warrant hitting the chart.
I was misunderstood and then everyone piled on.

I could have sworn this had about a +150 bullet about five days ago, and now it's -35. I realize Thanksgiving probably lowered spins a little bit, but 10 of the 24 songs above it still have bullets, and the fourth single from Audioslave has a +243.

Wow, this is really bad. I agree with the majority, this shouldn't be played at Alt.

Having songs like this getting played is what Alternative is all about or atleast should be. I think its good, the guitar riff is great. Oh reggae-esque stuff never gets played on Alt. ... are you people sure?

Wow, this is really bad. I agree with the majority, this shouldn't be played at Alt. Actually, there's a 66% majority right now in this topic saying that it should. I think I'll be the last to hear this song. I really do want to know what this is all about.

After a tough time of deciding if I really liked the song or not, I decided it's not all that bad. It has this reggae sound that we rarely hear on rock stations besides maybe partially Sublime or Authority Zero. While I do think it does belong on the Alternative format in a way, I don't think it should be played anywhere as much as it is. For example just last week, the station I listen to when I go home WPBZ played it 51 times. That's just ridiculously insane.
