Yeah, it's fucking massive. It's a comforting prospect.

I don't think it's what you're thinking. Reading the article, it's my understanding that they're talking about digital single sales, which is still impressive but a lot less so.

Ah, yes I see your point now. Yeah, that does not seem as "wowing" now that I'm thinking about it but still surprising to me nevertheless.

If you're thinking it's "wowing" to have every song on your album make the singles chart - which is what is happening here - then you are right. It is a big deal. It's never happened before, and won't again until Radiohead & Beatles release their catalogue to iTunes.

Don't think this song goes anywhere. Not catchy. for me is catchy for a band like arctic monkeys with no big radio-friendly melodies. it will sell 40-50k in USA and around 500k worldwide in first week imho.

I don't have a clear idea of how the singles chart works, but it seems to me that it's only going by how many people bought the song online. If that's the case, I'm sure at least every major album release down the pike is going to at least have a brief moment in the sun. This strikes me as impressive because it's a sign of their popularity and impressive because they appear to be the first, but I don't think they'll by any means be the last. There are a lot of popular bands out there. For example, who's to stop, say, Linkin Park for example, from achieving the same feat?

There are a lot of popular bands out there. For example, who's to stop, say, Linkin Park for example, from achieving the same feat? In the UK or here? I can see LP charting some of their songs over here (not in the UK) the week their album is released, but not the whole album. Oasis could probably do it over there, though, come to think of it. People still rally around them like musical national treasures all these years later. In the case of newer bands though, it is even less likely. Only an act truly riding the zeitgeist could accomplish something like this right now. Plenty of other "huge" British bands have yet to chart their full album (plus b-sides!). I'm sure a new act will join the ranks able to do so one day, but it's unlikely to ever become commonplace. But yes, I agree, this definitely confirms the Monkeys have some staying power, which is impressive and rare in this use-once-and-dispose culture we live in.

Why wouldn't Linkin Park be able to do it? They're popular worldwide, not just here.

They aren't anywhere near as big globally as here; for example, LP's latest single has only reached #13 in the UK. The Monkeys are far bigger; they, arguably, are truly the biggest band in the world right now, in terms of their reach & commercial cache. Their album will sell 500k+ worldwide in its first week, and unlike similar major US releases, where 90% the sales will be from the US alone (same goes for Japanese releases), the distribution of the sales will be diverse in the Monkeys case.
Sorry if this is hard to read. I'm really high right now. I can't even really see the screen properly. Or the keys.

No. U2 and Coldplay are bigger band, for sure.

74 71 ARCTIC MONKEYS Brianstorm 2007 Domino 130 103 27 0.461 Shouldn't this, like, not be in the 70s? Yeah, you'd think so since according to this article www.nme.com/news/arctic-monkeys/28093 their new album debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 and sold 44,000 copies in the U.S. in its first week out.

I hope they get on the Hot 100 this time. I remember "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" coming up just short.
