If radio had any sense they would play this, but I don't really see it happening.
Too bad. From the material I've heard, Hanson is going to deliver another great CD in "Underneath" that will go un-appreciated.

If radio went by how good the music is, I would say this would hit top 20.
However, radio does not play music based on how good it is. So I say it will peak outside the top 50 somewhere.
Great pop song and yes, another great cd that will most likely be overlooked.

Unfortunately, they are remembered for their image back when they were big. However, they have change signifigantly, they could hype themselves up a bit more using their change of style, if that makes any sense.

I love the song. I assume it will be ignored though.

I actually think Hanson is alright, but I have to say that this song is just a bad choice for 1st single. It's too much in the middle, you know? It's not poppy, not rocky, not catchy, it's basically an album track.
This is already flopping incredibly hard at Hot AC, so Pop won't let it reach Top 60, I'm sure.

I wouldnt say its flopping yet. Does anyone in the world expect this to immediately become an instant hit? Their management seems dedicated to giving it a chance-as in, promote it for several months rather than drop the song, see it does not become an instant mega hit, and abandon it. I have heard many of you state that this is part of the problem with the music industry in general-if something (a cd or song) is not a smash in one week, everyone names it a flop and abandons it. I hope some more slow builders will be given a chance rather than be called a flop and forgotten after a week

Well, Penny and Me went for adds already at Hot Ac and basically there are only 5 stations playing it. I can't see how/why it could become a moderate hit in the future.

Stranger things have happened :) (Not that I think it will become a hit-Im just saying that I do think it is a problem in the music business to give up the second something is released rather than give it time) The song has been getting good reactions from people who have heard it and they seem dedicated to give it a chance-Im not going to say, eh its OVER!!! in a week Maybe in a month ;)

HANSON Penny & Me Producer(s): Danny Kortchmar, Hanson Writer(s): I. Hanson, T. Hanson, Z. Hanson Publisher(s): Jam n Bread Music, ASCAP Genre: POP Label/Catalog Number: 3CG Records 10403 (CD single) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: March 20, 2004
Remember the Hanson brothers (Isaac, Taylor and Zac) from Tulsa, Okla.? In the late '90s, this trio jump-started teen-pop with the über-bubbly "MMMBop," which spent three weeks in pole position on The Billboard Hot 100. The album from which it came, "Middle of Nowhere," missed the No. 1 spot on The Billboard 200 by one position. Subsequent singles and albums failed to spark the same kind of excitement. Now, four years after its last studio effort ("This Time Around"), Hanson returns with this preview into its third studio recording, "Underneath," due April 20 from the act's own label 3CG Records, distributed by ADA. From boys to men, the members are now all grown up. The same is true of Hanson's 2004 sound. Co-produced by Danny Kortchmar (Don Henley, Billy Joel), "Penny & Me" is strummy, melodic pop-rock. It's a refreshing sound for the band. Of course, one cannot help but wonder if the "Hanson" name will help or hurt today. Let's hope radio programmers will listen to this gem with open ears.—MP

Catchy, but will not chart.
It'll do much better on Hot AC and maybe even AC if they release it there.
They seem better suited for an older audience.
Their "Mmmbop" days haven't left them and while I hated that era, they have improved a lot musically since then. So this'll be one of the sleeper songs of the year.

I like this song, but I agree with most of the folks in the thread. This song will go nowhere on pop. :(

They should have released Crazy Beautiful as their first single, in my opinion. That song is absolutely killer with the hooks. It's incredible. It starts with a piano riff that will knock your socks off and grab you right off the batt. The tune has plenty of vocal overdubs, a horn section, synthesizers on the voices, background talking, and a bouncy rhythm hauntingly similar to Don't Stop by Fleetwood Mac. Don't judge the album by Penny and Me. That's not the greatest Hanson song, there are many more that are better.

It has entered the Top 100. Im thinking this is as high as it will go (well maybe a top 90 ) Does anyone know, in the past, has high single sales affected airplay at all? They have a very rabid buying fanbase and I would not be surprised if their single out this week put up at least decent numbers.

It's cute, yeah, but what songs on the radio chart that are cute these days? The last song that was really "cute" was Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer. They should have released Crazy Beautiful.

Crazy Beautiful is a good song too, but I almost think that is too...weird for radio. I think Penny and Me is/was their best chance at getting a hit. (several songs are better, but in my opinion slightly less radio friendly)

This is already flopping incredibly hard at Hot AC, so Pop won't let it reach Top 60, I'm sure. Well...guess what? It's now sitting at #60 with a +71 bullet - a bullet that was a single-digit one (or just out of it) this time last week. Was this on a syndicated program in the past week or has radio finally started to pick up on this? :) There is evidence that points to the latter in that Format Starters shows 6 adds.

WKSS is playing this a lot, urgh!
It's worse than JC Chasez' "All Day Long..."
The lead singer's voice is incredibly annoying.
Well, I guess this means either pop stations are open to fresh new music or open to payola.

I have been watching daily spin trends (I really enjoy the song ok ) This is the second time it has either lost its bullet or come close. Once was the week before its single sales information was released, and now this was before the press about their album. Do sales normally have an impact on airplay? When this song came out my highest expectations for it was a top 50 showing-I doubt this new bullet will last but I am still holding out hope that it does hit at least #50.

Has it already been 4 weeks since they moved a whole bunch of songs to recurrent? Time sure flies.
I'm amused that the largest bullet this song has ever had is a number smaller than its current peak position.

I really don't get why people have to find reasons to hate on a song simply because of who it is by. The song is good, therefore radio should play it.
I really hope someday that Hanson can thumb their noses at the record industry and gain some critical praise. The guys really are talented, and just because they started as young kids with sugar pop isn't a good reason to hate on 'em.
This album is pretty darn good actually. Some of the songs even reminded me a bit of coldplay.
