During the 1st hour of this weeks' WT40, Dees takes a cheapshot at an unnamed countdown host. Hmmm, I wonder who he was talking about? ;)

While I'm at school we don't get the AT40 here. Does it still have all the same jingles like Casey's Top 40, or is it all revamped and "new" now?

Sorry about the bad link. Not sure what is wrong with that website. Instead, I'll just post what was said:
----------------------------------------------------------- Dees: Glad to talk to Utah right now. What's Up?
Caller: Hello Rick, how are you?
Dees: I couldn't be better. Thank you so much. Who is this please?
Caller: I'm Karen Tinos from Salt Lake City.
Dees: Hello Karen. Anything at all you want, we'll do that. First of all, you're listening to the countdown on this 1st weekend of May and what is you initial response?
Caller: Well, first of all, I want to say I listen to you every single weekend. I love your show. I love the way you put together the show, the way you talk about each artist, and the information you give about them, and the music you play.
Dees: Aren't you nice, Karen. Thank you so much. We love to do it.
Caller: Oh sure. However, I... listening to this other guy on some other countdown...
Dees: No.
Caller: Yes.
Dees: Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. You listen to another countdown? Hold on. Hold on. Go ahead. Go ahead.
Caller: But... But... All he does is just talk about himself and to be honest with you, he's NAUSEATING.
Dees: Well Karen, I.. You know, I can't agree with you about the... um the talking about himself part. <laughtrack>
Caller: <giggles>

While I'm at school we don't get the AT40 here. Does it still have all the same jingles like Casey's Top 40, or is it all revamped and "new" now? Well, it's weird to describe. At first it took a dramatic departure from Casey's AT40. But I've noticed that it has been reverting back to the original version. It sounds more modern now compared to before. At first they wouldn't mention chart information from the past, now you hear more of that. I'm hearing things that are written into the script which Casey used to do, then during Ryan's first couple weeks weren't ever done. And now they rae back. So it's changed, but it's also the same. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Let me quote from Mr. Seacrest from the 5/1/04 show, "We just make things up as we go."

on AT40.com, Sugababes (not Yellowcard) have #40. Odd. The actual broadcast has 40-37 as: 40 Yellowcard 39 Murphy Lee 38 Three Days Grace 37 Twista The web site has: 40 Sugababes 39 Twista 38 Three Days Grace 37 Nick Cannon The web site chart also claims that the top 32 are all holding their positions from last week. Um...no. Totally false. I don't know what the web editor was smoking this week. EDIT: Just noticed that the 4/24 chart on at40.com is screwed up too! The 4/17 chart looks alright. Geez, and I thought Rick Dees' web editors were bad.

Let me quote from Mr. Seacrest from the 5/1/04 show, "We just make things up as we go." Which isn't true, its almost all scripted except for when Ryan ad-libs.

Take it from a guy who has a countdown show...you can't "make things up as you go along. EvanJ is totally right, but sometimes we radio hosts have to lie. Most times you know when you're being lied to. (Like then. If I heard that I wouldn't have believed it.)
And if I made a big deal about it...sorry.

Do you work for American Top 40 or something? Nope. I have a friend who is a staff member on the show though. So I learn quite a bit of what goes on around the show and how things are done. I personally can tell when Ryan is reading, or when he is ad-libbing. I don't know how to describe it, but I also do the morning announcements at school and when I adlib something I feel that it sounds obvious. So he does adlib, like in the intros, making a joke about the artists, etc.

Agreed,
The line “we make things up as we go” is Mr. Seacrest’s effort to add humor to the show not to be a cold hard fact of truth.
However, the show is experimenting with a lot of different elements and hasn’t developed a set format for the listener to look forward each week. We really don’t know what he will do next week just like Rick Dees skipping songs without notice. The point made on Rick Dees show (during this thread) is well taken. Seacrest talks a lot about what he likes and thinks on AT40 during his ad-libbing.
Now, this falls into one of five interactive mistakes that DJs make as authored by Todd Mitchem “Abusing The Microphone”. Quoting from Todd, “audiences do not care to hear your thoughts on life every five minutes. Based upon years of observation, I can say that this behavior will hurt your relationship with your audience.”
What can Seacrest do to improve? Avoid the creation of his star power and center on the human-interest element of the musicians. Also, know what you want to say prior to saying it (especially with his TV show). Then, speak with a purpose and clear direction without repeating the same phrases over and over while cutting down on filler words (ahh, umm).
The irony lies in the fact that when Larry King asked Seacrest to fill-in on his Larry King Live! Show, he didn’t want to do it if there was a script. When Larry told him there was no script, Seacrest gladly filled-in interviewing Nick & Jessica because he’s more comfortable without any pre-scripted words. Now, AT40 is mainly script based.
