Why was this played?

Didn't AT40 used to play the previous #1 or even the top 3 at the beginning of the show back in the 70's and 80's? Did it make less of an impact back then to play the songs twice?

Yep, because airplay wasn't monitored back then, so any airplay from syndicated shows like AT40 didn't show up on a station's playlist.

I guess he's starting to play extras now for songs that tie into movies for the little part of the show where he talks about what's in movie theatres this weekend.

"Still Fly" was from Vin Diesel's XXX (No, it's not in theatres.  Maybe it came out on DVD or something?).

I don't think so, but he has a new movie in theatres in a week or so that, as far as I know, has nothing to do with XXX other than Vin Diesel in it. Talk about reaching.

I could have rationalized playing "Still Fly" better than he did.

Also:
When he said that Three Days Grace was up 3 to 33, couldn't you say something like "hey, the treys are wild!" or something?

And:
When the guy Casey from Kentucky was on air and said that when he came to Hollywood he might (jokingly) take Seacrest's job, couldn't they have used a Casey Kasem reference in that? It's only right!

I decided to wake up early to hear the entire show for the first time in about two months. I was disappointed to say the least.

After announcing what was being played at movies, he said, "Now here's a song from the soundtrack to 'XXX'." The song was just a tie-in to the movie segment.

The soundtrack is OK. It's mostly alternative bands with a couple of rappers .
