People Who Know Spanish But Not English? Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood is the most popular market for Spansih News/Talk even though other markets have a much higher percent Hispanic. I'm too lazy to look at the Puerto Rico ratings, but I think the two markets I've mentioned are the most popular ones for Spanish News/Talk.

I would guess Miami too because, well, they seem to have a large percentage of Spanish residents...But it would't surprise me if NYC were high on the list too...Hell, even I'm half Spanish ...

That should be "Which Market...". Now I know who to see about having paper's proofread... :) I think amongst big markets, Miami is #1, with NYC, Houston and LA not too far behind. Overall, its gotta be El Paso.

How would Arbitron data be able to conclude how many people don't speak English? Just because Spanish formats may do well doesn't necessarily mean its listeners don't speak English.

Yes, but by doing Spanish rating/percent Hispanic you can guess (assuming there is an adequate supply of Spanish stations).

Yes, but by doing Spanish rating/percent Hispanic you can guess (assuming there is an adequate supply of Spanish stations). It's still inconclusive unless Arbitron asks diary keepers if they speak only Spanish.

Then the topic title should be "Which Market Has The Greatest Percentage Of People Whose First (or Primary) Language Is Spanish" (ratings still aren't the most accurate way to determine this, but if that's the data you're using...).

A report from the US Census Bureau this week has reported that one in five people do speak another language other than English at home. If you want to use the "one in five" figure to determine the percentage in x market don't speak English, take a stab at it.

That doesn't help me because it's not specifically about Spanish and it isn't a market by market statistic. Maybe it would help me if I went through all 287 markets to calculate what percent of people are Hispanic, but I'm not going to do that. I wonder if you could get area school statistics showing what percent are "English as a Second Language."
