I have two favorites, pretty much equal so I won't rank them: Carl Anderson's and Mariah's.

Well I haven't heard all the versions mentioned here but it is one of my very favorite Christmas songs ever. I have to say the way Clay Aiken sings it on his Christmas tour is utterly awesome ( and remember -- this is a live performance night after night). He adds an extra ending from another song (sorry, can't remember the name of it) -- it is really really good. And hitting that note---hard to think guys can do it, but it gives chills. Here's a link if anyone is interested from last year's tour -- www.allthingsclayaiken.com/concertmp3s.htmlLook under Joyful Noise Tour on the right side.

Thanks for the link---I just downloaded and listened. Never would have pictured her singing it. Different intrepretation---unique to most others I've heard. And yeah, I always knew the woman could "sang." I also heard Yolanda Adams sing it and while I like her and she was good, it wasn't my favorite. Wish I had heard some of the others mentioned here too. Have heard Josh Groban's and it's good.

Mariah! The 1994 version, not the 2000 version.

Martina McBride has a recorded version (not the one on her album, the file I have says it's from "Country Heat Christmas 1992") which is acapella in the first verse and just acoustic strings accompaniment in the second and it's just awesome. O Holy Night is my favorite holiday song and if I could only choose one it would definitely be Martina's acapella version with just the voice front and center (no horrid back up singers or inappropriate/overwhelming instrumentation) and sung straight up without any ornamentation and trilling. ETA: I can't find this version for sale anywhere online so I'm going to post an upload because everyone should hear it. rapidshare.de/files/7356142/Martina_McBride_-_Christmas_Songs_-_O_Holy_Night__Acapella_.mp3.html

Whitney Houston did some great, different things with her version (starting off the way it did, the build-up, etc.). That's probably my fave.

Celine Dion has done the best version by far!!! Then Christina's version and then Mariah.

I've never heard Celine's version; I'll have to listen for it. I've heard Christina's and I agree it's good. My favorites are still Mariah's and Carl Anderson's, though. I've only heard one Mariah version; it must be the old one because I've been hearing it for more than five years.
Has anyone ever heard the Carl Anderson? He's a jazz artist, but his take on this song is more like smooth R&B. It's beautiful.

Mariah's is like in another category for me. No matter which version I listen to, it's always mediocre compared to Mariah's.

Um Kelly Clarkson's acapella is just perfection.

Mariah's is like in another category for me. No matter which version I listen to, it's always mediocre compared to Mariah's. agreed. i love how low she sings in the first few bars.... and of course, how high she sings the climax of the song. it's like this song was made for mariah to sing. other than her version, celine's and josh groban's are good. they're about the same thing, but they're good.

Mariah's 1994 version was stratospheric... no, more like heavenly. The very very high notes are just crazy... she does sound like an angel.
