Please don't say this is a cover of Mary J.'s hit...

It's going for Hot AC adds this week. I have no idea if it's a cover but I'm guessing no. Hopefully All Access will post the song this week.

She recently graduated from my school (the University of Wisconsin), so I'd love to see this take off. I think she's much more suitable for Adult Contemporary, though. I haven't heard this one yet, but Devils & Angels didn't achieve the success it deserved. She writes all her own music.

LOL, it's actually not bad for a cover. She did a great job of copying Mary's runs.

LOL! Yeah, I meant that all the songs on the album that aren't remakes were written by her.

This sounds great!
They are re-releasing her album to include this. Kind of sucks for those of us who have already bought it, but maybe they'll include some other tracks to make it worth while.

TOBY LIGHTMAN Real Love Producer(s): Peter Zizzo Writer(s): various Publisher(s): various Genre: POP Label/Catalog Number: Lava 301513 (CD promo) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: July 17, 2004
A highlight of newcomer Lightman's live show is a dazzling, soul-smacked cover of Mary J. Blige's 12-year-old, top 10 smash "Real Love." Others—particularly at Lightman's label—must agree. Lightman re-entered the studio and emerged with this sterling remake, which is now being stripped onto her recently released debut, "Little Things." In Lightman's hands, the track is equal parts pop, folk and hip-hop. Fans of Blige's version will surely be surprised—at first. But repeated listens reveal a track that sits comfortably alongside recent offerings from Alicia Keys, Dido, Sheryl Crow, Teena Marie, Maria Mena and Blige. In other words, this has what it takes to be a multiformat smash (R&B/hip-hop, AC, top 40). By taking on such a revered classic, Lightman is surely stepping out on a limb. But those that listen with an open mind will be royally rewarded.—MP

I agree, except that there's no way this song would get played on R&B or hip-hop stations.

Well... it might get played on some. CHR-Rhythmic KZZP Phoenix could play it (and could be moved to CHR-Pop). KZZP is playing Hoobastank (providing 81 out of the 86 spins "The Reason" has on that format), Switchfoot, Linkin Park, and Maroon 5. WPYM Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood is another CHR-Rhythmic possibility.

I just heard this on Z100. I didn't pay attention to this topic before, so I was kind of surprised to hear someone else singing "Real Love."
I think it's too soon to cover "Real Love" but aside from that, it's not a bad cover.
