just a heads up on Beyonce and Irreplacable....it's only eligable in the Record and Song of the year catagories....B-Day won Best contemporary RnB album last year, making it inelagable in all but the general song catagories.

I have a question about re-releases.
Last year (nominations announced in 06, awards in 07) Mariah got nominated for DFAU and it was under TEOM: Special/Platinum Edition (or whatever it's called). The year before Mariah won for TEOM (regular edition), but since she re-released it, did that mean that all the tracks were elligible or just the ones added on the re-release?

So you think Carrie Underwood didn't deserve to win? I think Carrie Underwood has a powerful voice, but considering her competition, no, overall I wouldn't say she was the best new artist nominated. I would have sooner seen it go to Corinne Bailey Rae, Imogen Heap, or James Blunt - Corinne Bailey Rae is the one most to my personal liking, but I think all three display actual artistry in their performances. Underwood is a good singer and I enjoy some of her songs, but I just don't think there's anything out of the ordinary about her album or music that somehow deserves special recognition. Then again, there's probably a good reason I'm not part of any panel that has anything to do with the Grammy Awards. There are a lot of ways to view 'Best New Artist,' though. Regardless of how you feel about the quality of work, some people see the award as being about who will be around and relevant for years to come. In that sense, Carrie was the clear winner last year. I think Arrested Development and Paula Cole released great albums the years they won New Artist, but where are they now? I see James Blunt going the same route.

A list of songs ineligible this year because they were submitted last year: "U + Ur Hand" - Pink "Lost Without U" - Robin Thicke "Glamorous" - Fergie "Welcome To The Black Parade" - My Chemical Romance "Listen" - Beyonce "Hurt" - Christina Aguilera "Fidelity" - Regina Spektor "Boston" - Augustana *It makes little sense why most of these were submitted last year, but they were.
A list of songs ineligible this year (except in Record and Video) because they are from albums that won an Album category last year: "Irreplaceable" - Beyonce (or any other track from the original version of the album) "Take Me As I Am" - Mary J. Blige "Runaway Love" - Ludacris f/ Mary J. Blige "Snow" - Red Hot Chili Peppers (or any other track from the album) *Some people say these songs are eligible for Song, but no song from an Album winner has ever been nominated in Song the next year (but plenty have been nominated in Record).

Why on earth did P!nk's label submit "U + Ur Hand" last year when it wasn't even released at the time?

Why on earth did P!nk's label submit "U + Ur Hand" last year when it wasn't even released at the time? No idea, though wasn't it a single back then? It still makes no sense as "Stupid Girls" was also submitted. A lot of those submissions make no sense as the songs hadn't been released yet or hadn't impacted yet.

Jennifer Hudson will probably be submitted in the Traditional R&B Vocal performance category for "And I'm Telling You."
I hope Deborah Cox is nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for the "Destination Moon" album.

Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" was submitted last year as part of Will.I.Am's Producer nod, so that is ineligible this year, too.

Disappointing that WTTBP was already submitted because that could have been a contender. Not that Hurt would've made much noise but why was that submitted last year when they already had a winner in ANOM???
GO AMY WINEHOUSE!

Was Nelly Furtado's "Loose" submitted last year? And if it was, is "Say It Right" still eligible for any awards?

Loose was submitted, but since it didn't win an Album category, the songs from it that weren't submitted last year are still eligible. I believe only "Promiscuous" and "Maneater" were submitted, so "Say It Right" should be eligible.

Saw this on the Grammy site. I don't know if they will feature quotes from different artist as a part of the 50th celebration.

But 10 grammys in 9 years, WOW. lol I am so glad that Jennifer won a oscar! I hope now she wins a grammy and a tony! Beyonce said she wanted to be the first woman to do that. Show how it will be done Jennifer!

What did Whoopi win a Tony for?
And I'd find it more impressive if Whoopi had won a Grammy for singing as opposed to comedy. At least Streisand has a Grammy for singing, an Oscar for acting (and one for writing), and a Tony.

Whoopi actually has all of the big 4 awards (Oscar, Tony, Grammy and Emmy) but I think her Tony is for production and not acting but its a Tony nonetheless

Streisand has all of those too, if I'm not mistaken.
I think the ultmate would be to win a Grammy for singing, an Oscar for acting (or directing or screenplay), a Tony for performance, and then an Emmy for acting (or directing or writing).

What are Maroon 5's chances at a major nod (Album, Record or Song of the year)? Their album sounds really good and they have a 78 on metacritic right now - a really high score. Makes Me Wonder is huge too - they could have a good night. I think they'll win Pop Vocal Duo/Group and get nominated for Pop Album & Record of the Year.

I dunno about "Makes Me Wonder" as a SOTY candidate, but I agree that the group could have a good Grammy night. In addition to the decent reviews and big sales, they have a couple Grammy wins to their credit already, so you gotta think they'll be on the voters' radar, including the major categories.

From HDD News: ATTENTION GRAMMY VOTERS: TWO FEISTY EARLY CONTENDERS Amy Winehouse and Feist Hit the Radar With Smarts, Style, Attitude and HooksJune 1, 2007 By Lenny Beer & Bud Scoppa Although these are difficult times for the music business, the music itself is flourishing, especially in terms of female artists. The stage was set by the Dixie Chicks, whose runaway Grammy winner Taking the Long Way begins with three songs that resonate as strongly as any opening to an album in recent memory. No wonder the LP has shown such staying power. On the heels of this triumph, two beguiling new and developing female artists have emerged to brighten the prevailing gloom. Amy Winehouse and Feist have both released scintillating albums that combine a firm grounding in the musical past with a bold assertiveness that is very much of the moment, providing the pop landscape with an exhilarating, much-needed blast of fresh air. These two career artists share a knack for creating provocatively personal music embedded with irresistible pop hooks, and have also added to our video library with eye-catching brilliance. Winehouse convincingly portrays a ball-busting femme fatale with a mind of her own on Back to Black (Universal Republic), which contains the hit single “Rehab,” a heady blend of vintage soul and contemporary attitude. If this song of empowerment and defiance stands as the year’s most distinctive premise, Feist’s “1234,” from her album Reminder (Interscope), is 2007’s most inventive musical concoction, with its unconventional instrumentation, buoyant groove and playful vocal. Taken together, Winehouse and Feist’s breakthrough hits exemplify the autonomous self-assurance of their generation’s envelope-pushing brand of female consciousness. Tellingly, these albums have followed a similar path on the way to approaching imminent critical mass, staking their claims in the iTunes Top 10 and maintaining a serious online presence, which continues to be a crucial aspect of their respective ascents. The new media generation has embraced them wholeheartedly, and the video channels are rejoicing in their creativity. In a big-picture sense, the artistic and commercial impact of this gifted twosome provides hope for the industry as a whole, demonstrating that the major label system is still capable of locating, nurturing and breaking significant artists. Don’t be surprised if Winehouse and Feist find themselves pitted against each other in the Best New Artist category of the 2008 Grammy competition. If the mainstream country stylings of Carrie Underwood, this year’s winner in the same category, are the aural equivalent of comfort food, these two contenders challenge as they satisfy.

So, we're 9 months into the Grammy year (i.e. 3/4 through). Anyone want to make a prediction about the big categories of Album, Record, Song, and/or New Artist?
