Can someone explain the situation with the Grease Soundtrack and why there are difficulties in deciding how much it has actually sold? What figures are generally agreed upon?

It was certified 8x platinum through 1984. Labels have to apply for certification. The record label (RSO records) though is no longer in operation, so it has never been recertified.
Soundscan sales are around 6 million or so (from 1991)
Certainly it sold something between 1984 and 1991, If I were to put a number on it, I would say another 6 million.
Rough estimates for the Grease soundtrack would then be in excess of 20 million
