John Mayer Plays Political Strategist to John Edwards TUESDAY MAY 15, 2007 04:45 PM EDT
By Stephen M. Silverman People Magazine
John Mayer and presidential candidate John Edwards have more in common than great hair: Both are interested in reaching the youth of America.
To that end, Mayer, 29, chatted with Edwards, 53, last week at the TIME Magazine 100 gala in New York City, New York magazine reports.
"He was talking about the language of young people, his generation," Edwards tells the magazine. "He basically said, 'You've got to get me in the first 20 seconds. I watch movies on YouTube, and if they're 25 seconds long, they're five seconds too long.' "
The unlikely political bedfellows were at the event because Mayer and Edwards's wife Elizabeth, who is battling cancer, were selected by TIME as two of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Edwards tells New York that he set up a meeting with Mayer so that he can hear more from the singer also known as Jessica Simpson's boyfriend.
Mayer, who has been writing on his blog recently about his efforts to gradually make his lifestyle more environmentally friendly (an approach he's dubbed "Light Green"), knows how to be subtle: After he performed an acoustic set at the TIME dinner, he noted: "There's a whole different approach to playing music for those who are eating. If it's a red wine, I usually go with something ballad-y."

Mayer Aiming For Good Times On Summer TourMay 17, 2007, 12:40 PM ET Gary Graff, Detroit John Mayer is predicting a "laid back" kind of summer when he hits the road June 1 for a nine-and-a-half week continuation of his "Continuum" tour. "I've gotten older and learned how to have a little fun and stop taking myself so seriously all the time," Mayer tells Billboard.com. "I have this idea for a summer tour that's really relaxed and less a display of musicality and more like a conversation. I just want to take off all the pressure and play as loose as I can." After the summer jaunt -- which includes a stop at the July 7 Live Earth show at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., and an appearance at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival on July 28 outside Chicago -- Mayer plans to hunker down on his next album. He's been working on material but says it's "too early" to talk about any of it -- except that he definitely feels self-generated pressure to raise the creative bar yet again. "I'm not the guy who wrote 'Continuum' working on my new album; I'm this guy named John trying to put together a record to express how he feels," Mayer explains. "There's no tenure in songwriting. You start from the beginning every single time." What remains uncertain is whether the album will be a solo effort or a John Mayer Trio affair. "I'm not sure yet," he acknowledges. "I have a couple of ideas for both. So I'm not sure how I'm going to do it. I think I'm just going to record the tunes first, and then see what's up. But I would like to do a trio studio record. That's probably next." The album will come out, he adds, "whenever it's great -- the same thing I said with 'Continuum,' and that took two years. I'm just trying to get a better record out of me." Mayer shares that philosophy with Alicia Keys, who he's been working with on songs for her upcoming J album. He says they've "done a few things," but it's not yet certain what will ultimately appear on the album -- which has no timetable yet, either. "She's such a great artist that she may have 20 things better than the stuff we did," Mayer notes. "If (his contributions) make it, that would be great. If it doesn't, I don't have any hard feelings. May the best songs win."

Jessica Simpson & John Mayer Split - For Now FRIDAY MAY 18, 2007 01:10 PM EDT FRIDAY MAY 18, 2007 02:40 PM EDT UPDATED
Jessica Simpson and John Mayer have ended their romance - but perhaps not for good, a source close to Simpson tells PEOPLE.
"They have broken up," says the source. "But they have broken up and gotten back together at least ten times before."
According to the source, the pair are in constant contact - even as Simpson promotes her film Major Movie Star at the Cannes Film Festival in France. "They talk to each other at least six times a day. I don't know if this breakup is permanent, but for right now they are broken up."
In fact, the pair have "been emailing and talking to each other," since Simpson went to Cannes, says a Simpson friend. "I'm sure they'll get back together."
As for why the two singers split, a friend of Mayer's says, "John did say that he broke up [with Jessica]. He said that it was because he was just over it."
But the pal says there is no other woman. "He's fine about it, he's not upset - but he's definitely not looking for someone right now."
A source who spoke with Mayer recently says the breakup came as a surprise: "Whenever I've seen them, they've been tight and together. I've never seen them argue or anything."
Still, Mayer didn't appear to be taking the split too hard on Thursday. The rocker stayed out until nearly 4 a.m. partying at New York hotspot Stereo. He sat at a back able in the VIP area where he drank two glasses of Jack Daniels and hung out with friends, according to sources.
Reps for Simpson, 26, and Mayer, 29, refused to comment on their clients' personal lives.
Simpson and Mayer have been gradually more and more open about their relationship after months of playing coy. Asked about Simpson in February, Mayer told Time Out New York, "I'm having the best time of my life, so if the names don't make sense to people, that's so small to me."
Soon after, though, the pair stepped out in a big way, taking a joint vacation to Italy in March. And when Mayer's Continuum tour hit Australia in April, Simpson was frequently by his side, spending down time with her beau on Byron Beach.
While Down Under, the two were prone to public displays of affection. Said a fellow passenger flying in business class with the couple from Sydney to Perth: "They were snuggling together."
And Mayer has earned praise from Simpson's family. Recently, Joe Simpson told PEOPLE, "If Jessica is in love, I love the things she is in love with." And he added: "I want her to be happy."

Exactly. This is a good CD, and it's holding on nevertheless. It hasn't gotten as much commercial/radio response as his previous efforts in my opinion.

People Magazine: John Mayer Doesn't Warm to Eco-Questions at Live Earth By Mike Fleeman Sunday, July 8, 2007 John Mayer was eco-friendly onstage – wrapping up Live Earth by jamming with The Police at Giants Stadium on Saturday – but backstage he had some global warnings. For one, don't ask him about Jessica Simpson. "I'm not going to practice some conversation right now and minimize my bull---- footprint," he told a reporter who asked if Mayer still spoke to Simpson. Also, don't ask him if he has any "eco-sins" (as many of Live Earth's electricity-using, private-jet-flying rockers readily confessed to). "What is my eco-sin?" Mayer answered. "I don't know if that is that provocative a question for me. I don't know. I'm still trying to figure out what my motivation is – what is the positive side to the things that I could do?" He later added: "If you want to peg me as not being entirely eco-friendly, you'll win," though he said, "We have a tour, which is inherently car pooling." Less confrontational was Kelly Clarkson, who says that while she recycles and car pools, she's still learning the best ways to conserve resources. "We need just as much information as the audience," she said after her Giants Stadium set. "We're not brilliant. I'm not the most educated on the process, but I'm learning." Rosario Dawson said backstage that not only is she "that person who turns off the light every time I walk out of a room," but that she'd seriously question dating anybody who isn't green. "I'd probably have a really huge problem with that," she said. Source: People Online

Pete Wentz mentions John in blog - from Try JM
Here's an excerpt from Pete Wentz's blog:
...then playing live earth was another mindblowing experience- to see all of these people coming together for music and belief all at once gave me chills. we got to hang with some good people like kanye west and john mayer- id recommend both of them as people and artists. i dont know how to explain but it is thrilling to be in the presence of people you know will end up changing culture....
