"Switch" is now available to pre-order on iTunes! Also, her rare unreleased sophomore album "Welcome to Fantasy Island" is now available on Datpiff for FREE: However, it is missing two tracks ("T-Shirt & Panties" + "Crank Me Up" featuring Missy Elliott), which later appeared on her third album "The Second Coming."

ADINA HOWARD EXPLAINS WHY SHE LEFT, HER LIFE AS A CHEF & NEW MUSIC5 COMMENTS October 1, 2013 ‐ By Veronica Wells I want to let you in on a little secret. I love Adina Howard’s music. To this day, my spirit quickens when I hear the instrumental for her song, “T-Shirt and Panties.” In a lot of ways, through her music, she’s said the types of things we wish we had the courage to say aloud. But when I spoke to Adina this afternoon, she explained why she’s really not about singing about that life anymore. I was a little disappointed but I also understand why she said it. And even though she might not want to only sing about the provocative stuff anymore, she still let me know she hasn’t lost her sensuality. In fact, she’s channeled it into her new career path, culinary arts. Throughout our conversation she took me through a brief life journey including how she came to be so sexually expressive, how she uses food as a means of seduction and why she decided to participate in TV One’s series “Life After.” It takes a woman with gall to express her sexual bravado on a record for the whole world to hear. One could assume that someone turned Adina out or an older woman pulled her aside and gave her a speech on the wonders of womanhood. Ironically, a bout of racism in 8th grade, helped her to break out of her shell and more herself, unapologetically. Adina’s mother moved the family from Michigan to Arizona. Everything was going along fine until one day, during her gym class, she glanced over at one of her white classmates who she thought resembled a character from the movie Top Gun. Though she never said anything to the boy and claims to only have looked at him for a second, he turned and spat in Adina’s hair. And if that wasn’t enough, he included a racial slur to boot. When her mother went to administrators about the incident they told her “We can’t do anything about it. If it happens again, let us know.” Adina said the incident was life changing. Her mother let her leave the school and the state but eventually they came back to Arizona. But before they arrived, Adina told her: “If we go back to Arizona, be prepared for me to get kicked out of school.” From that incident she learned that “your bark has to be loud.” And that carried over into her music. She said she wanted people to know “I’m here, what?!” And despite the bad experience she had in Arizona and vowing never to return, that’s exactly where she ended up. Both her husband and her education happened to be there. She decided to go to school to study culinary arts. It may seem like a stretch from singer to chef but Adina said the transition was natural for her. She wanted to pursue a skill that would allow her to live a life that would wasn’t so public. So she prayed about it. “Lord, you know who I am because you did this. You know I can’t just have any job. Find me a job where I will not be questioned.” And food suits her well. “To me, food is another form of entertainment and it’s also a form of seduction. I just want to be inside you.” Adina talked about the immediate gratification she gets from cooking for people. “You touch them in ways that music can’t touch them. You actually savor the food, it marinates on the inside. You stay with them for a while.” Well, that certainly is sensual. So in order to feed her passion she works as a line cook at a resort in Arizona where Adina says she’s grinding and paying her dues. And though her manager makes an effort to tell new employees who she is, she says the experience has been liberating because she’s been embraced. Embraced in a way that she didn’t always experience in the music industry: “The industry is full of wolves and snakes. Every kind of negative animal you can think of. It’s full of people who want more than they’ve worked for.” Adina says that when she felt like she was showing up and doing what she was supposed to, the label didn’t reciprocate or hold up their end of the deal. Eventually she’d had enough of it. “I don’t care what type of reputation or fan base I’ve developed. Nobody wants to work for free.” But all of that changed with a recent performance: “For the first time I enjoyed performing.” And when she came home and told her husband that, he encouraged her to get back in there and do one more project. Today, Adina says it’s a completely different ball game. “Now, because music is not my sole source of income, it’s now become a hobby.” She notes that people don’t like to hear that but Adina has this for those who don’t understand: “Don’t be mad at me because this is not my grind. Am I hungry? Absolutely. But I can find other ways to eat. I don’t have to remain relevant. Ya’ll can keep all of this. This is for play-play.” But just because this is a hobby, she still wants to get paid. So it only made sense that she participate in TV One’s new series “Life After” in attempts to promote her reemergence in music and her new single “Switch,” which you can purchase on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play. The song is featured on her new project The Switch Up. Adina says this album is based on who she is and not based on the label’s perception of what people what: “Not to say that you they will not get a little morsel but I need to get out of this provocative box they’ve put me in. “Freak Like Me” should be able to tide you over.” Even though it’s a change she’s been waiting 10 years to make, Adina is well aware that her core group of fans want what they’re used to. She says people approach her screaming that they want “Freak Like Me 2014″ but to them she says: “Can I give you this first? Can I whet your palette with this first?” You can see what Adina is up to those days on AdinaHoward.com and follow her on Twitter at @adinahoward.

Adina Howard Reveals What Happened To Her Singing Career And Who Blackballed Her In The Music IndustryOct 8, 2013 By TT Torrez Ever wondered what happened to “Freak Like Me” singer Adina Howard? Well, Adina Howard called up the TT Torrez Show and she revealed what REALLY happened to her singing career, how she transitioned from a singer to a chef and if she plans on getting back into the music industry. On why she left the music industry:Adina said the reason she left the music industry is because she made a comment about music industry executive Sylvia Rhone and it got back to her. Once it did, Adina was “blackballed” in the industry. She said she signed with other labels and they wouldn’t do their part to make her successful, so she left. Adina said she’s telling her story now because she felt God said it’s time to share with the world where she is in her journey. She said she’s a survivor that’s still standing and there’s always life after anything you do. On if she plans on pursuing music:Adina said she just released a new single which was encouraged by her husband so yes, she’s making a comeback. She said this time around she’s more involved, making wiser decisions, and not letting egos get in the way. Does she plan on changing her sexy image? Not at all. She said sexy is who she is and will never go anywhere. It will just be a mature sexy. On if she was profiting from her hit singles released when she came out:Adina admitted she was NOT making money from songs like “Freak Like Me” and “T-Shirt & Panties.” She said she has YET to see a royalty check for those songs because of the way her contract was set-up when she signed BUT she plans on fighting to get what’s rightfully hers.

Shrimp and GritsBy Adina Howard October 25, 2013Since my "Life After" episode many of you have asked for my Shrimp and Grits recipe. Well here it is. Let me know how this recipe works out for you. I'm so used to just cooking that I don't keep notes of what it is I do in the kitchen, so let me know if I'm on the right track with putting together my recipes for all of you. Your feedback is important. THESE ARE THE MAIN SEASONING INGREDIENTS I USE FOR MY SHRIMP AND GRITS: THE ONLY ITEMS MISSING ARE THE SHRIMP, GRITS AND OLIVE OIL 1 1/2 cups cream 1/4 cup seafood stock (veg and/or chicken broth will do as well) 1 3/4 cups grits 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 green onions, rough chop into small pieces (rinse and cut roots) 2 roma tomatoes, (rinse and dice small) 1-2 cloves of fresh garlic, minced 1 1/2 pounds Jumbo fresh/frozen shrimp (rinse, peel and devein) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon fresh cracked pepper 1/2 teaspoon Cavender’s Greek seasoning 1/2 packet of Sazon Goya (con azafran) DIRECTIONS: Chop your green onions(scallions), dice your tomatoes, and mince your garlic first and set aside until needed. 1. When making your grits follow the directions on the box. Once they’re finished, I like to add some heavy cream, butter, salt and pepper to taste. I like my grits somewhat thick, but creamy. 2. Once you have cleaned your shrimp, place in a bowl and season with a half packet of Sazon Goya, sea salt, cracked pepper, and Cavender’s Greek seasoning. 3. While waiting for the grits, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat (if you have numbers on your stove dial turn it to 6). Saute the garlic for about 30 seconds (do not burn). Then add tomatoes, stock or broth and cream to the pan then turn the heat up to med high (that’s around 7-8). Once the mixture has heated up and thickened slightly add shrimp and any of the extra liquid from the bowl into the pan and cook until the shrimp has cooked through (opaque and slightly closed). Sauce should not be runny. You want it to be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. 4. Serve the grits with a generous helping of the shrimp and sauce poured over them. Sprinkle a 1 teaspoon of green onions/scallions on top. If you want a taste bit of heat sprinkle some crushed red peppers over the top of the shrimp and grits, then serve.

Adina Howard is Back!Posted by VIXEN on Nov 1, 2013 That’s right, the sultry singer known for her hit song “Freak Like Me”, along with many others, is working on a new album and promoting her new single Switch. Since her hiatus, Adina has gotten married, and received her Culinary Arts degree. She is excited about her upcoming album, saying “I’m doing it my way, and I am working at my own pace.” What was your inspiration for the song “Switch”?It’s interesting because my husband is the project coordinator for this new project, but I actually was not going to record another album at all. I was so over it. My husband said, ‘Babe, you have one more in you. Just do one more project.’What did you think of the song? When I first heard it, I wasn’t really feeling it, but then I had to check myself because I’m one of those people that when my ego gets in the way, I will block my blessing. So I really started listening to the song and the lyrics and said that’s me. I love changing up and looking different. I don’t like to follow the crowd. I like to lead the crowd, so this song for me is indicative of who I am as a person, because ‘imma switch up on you in a heartbeat. Can listeners expect variety on this upcoming album?Definitely. Music is universal. Are you excited about this album?Yes, definitely. I am under a new label, and I am doing it my way, not waiting on other people, and working at my own pace. What are you doing in your off time from promoting?I am working as a cook after receiving my culinary arts degree, and am enjoying spending time with my family. (Adina is married and has a 14 year-old daughter.)Who is your favorite artist to listen to?I like Rihanna. I call her my little spawn [laughs]. I enjoy her music.Speaking of her music, how do you feel about today’s artists expressing their sexuality? They are expressing themselves. They are artists. I remember the media went crazy when my music first came out. It’s just sex. We all got here from somewhere. These artists do things to get attention by any means necessary. Sometimes it’s detrimental to their career, other times it’s not. I say do you and be you. When is your release date for the album?I am still working on it, but it will be out in the beginning of 2014.

REWIND: WE REVISIT ADINA HOWARD’S “DO YOU WANNA RIDE” WITH ADINAADINA HOWARD - Do You Wanna Ride (1995) ReWind Takes You Back to A Release & The Artist and/or People Involved with The Project Speak about it.1995 was a great year in the world of R&B music, Michael Jackson released “HIStory: Past, Present And Future,” Jodeci dropped their third album “The Show, The After Party, The Hotel,” R. Kelly hit us with his self-titled album and that year Faith Evans, Monica, D’Angelo, Deborah Cox & Jon B. all released their debut albums. Another new artist at that time dropped her debut album as well, Adina Howard. “Do You Wanna Ride” was released in February of the year, preceded by the mega-hit single “Freak Like Me.” The platinum single went #1 on the R&B charts and #2 on Billboards Hot 100. The sexually charged track was different from the norm than what other R&B female artists were doing and created a lane for Adina to have all to herself. The album’s next singles “My Up And Down” and “It’s All About You” failed to make a mark commercially as “Freak Like Me” did. However the album went platinum and was considered by many to be one of the best R&B albums released that year. We spoke with Adina about the release and got her feedback on the success of “Freak Like Me” and “Do You Wanna Ride,” her thoughts on why the follow-up singles didn’t do as well as the lead and Adina tells us about the first time she ever heard herself on the radio. ————————– UrbanBridgez.com Take us back to Freak Like Me, do you have any early memories of hearing your music on the radio for the first time?Adina Howard: I do, I remember hearing Freak Like Me for the first time when I was driving down Sunset Blvd. I was listening to the radio and I remember hearing the song and was like this song sounds familiar. And I was like Ayyy, wait (Screams)! This is my song (laughs)! Then I had to quickly pump my breaks because when the song was over I realized it was their make it or break it portion. Then I was like, oh. It’s what do they think about the song? But most of the callers were like this is different, we’ll see if the label promotes and pushes it. So that was basically about it. UrbanBridgez.com That’s kind of cool also for you to hear your first single ever on the radio and it be a rush it or flush it type of situation, so you can really get opinions.Adina Howard: Exactly, I was like please don’t flush it (laughs). UrbanBridgez.com That album has so many gems on it, was there any songs on the album you wished were released?Adina Howard: Oh man, let’s see. I haven’t listened to that album in forever. UrbanBridgez.com Really?Adina Howard: Yeah I don’t listen to my music like that. That’s the one thing I don’t do. I’ll listen to it over and over again when I’m in the midst of recording it. Then pretty much when it’s done so I can critique myself & the music. Then I get really strange because when I record a new song for the project then the one I liked before I’m like I don’t like that one anymore, I like this one better. So I’m weird like that (laughs). I don’t find myself listening to my music much because I don’t record my music for me. So I don’t really get a whole lot out of it. UrbanBridgez.com Well my favorite was Baby Come Over, that should of been a single.Adina Howard: Really? Wow, okay. Thank you! You know what with that album I don’t know what happened. What’s so interesting is labels tend to have the tendency to think they know what the public wants to hear. So they release what they want to release. Instead of taking the opinion of the public, but I guess if they did that they would be all over the place because not everybody agrees. So they decide to push this one and that one. And the ones that they did was at the time absolutely fine by me. Because they pushed the provocative music. But when they selected the singles they didn’t follow through with the promotion and marketing of it like they did with Freak Like Me. Sometimes what labels do is when they feel they achieved the success off the first single, they think that’s all you need and don’t need the support. So they can kind of just throw stuff at the wall and hope it sticks. So when you fall, then they’re looking at you like you can’t sell anymore. And it’s like no you’re not doing what you did before, don’t be trying to blame that on me shoot. I got the gift, you got the money (both laugh). UrbanBridgez.com Do You Wanna Ride dropped in 95, what was better about the music industry, compared to how it is now?Adina Howard: I couldn’t even tell you, honestly I couldn’t because it’s all the same to me at this point. The difference between then and now is the technology. I learned my lesson because I use to say independent labels are more compact and they’ll be able to focus on you more & push your project. Only to realize they’re not as good because they do not have the machine like the major has. All of their contacts and what not, they’re ineffective. So at the end of the day you need a label that supports you 100%, has the contacts, has the financial backing that’s needed for the pay to play. Because if you don’t have the money to pay these radio stations to play your music you can forget about it. Again I love technology, to a certain degree today because it’s a blessing and a curse. But internet radio and satellite radio are good, but they will never add up to what traditional radio is. Because not everybody can afford satellite radio and on top of that you have so many got darn stations and when it comes to internet radio again it’s so many of them & just anybody can put a internet radio station together. So it’s not like it’s a huge catalyst for artist like that. UrbanBridgez.com Yeah, because spins can’t be tracked that way.Adina Howard: Exactly! UrbanBridgez.com From that album what was the best part about the success and what was the worst part?Adina Howard: The best part about being successful with that album was being able to travel to certain parts of the world that I would have never seen if I hadn’t had that opportunity. The worst part and I really won’t say it was the worst part but the challenging part about that project was not getting paid for it. I’ve never seen a royalty check, everybody else got paid and is still getting paid off of me. I don’t know where my money is till this day because they hid it so well. But it’s cool… UrbanBridgez.com Wow, Karma, Karma will come to them all.Adina Howard: Man! She’s a beast and she don’t play! Check back next week to UrbanBridgez.com for Our New Interview with Adina Howard as she tells us about her up-coming new album, her thoughts on her Life After episode, touring overseas compared to the states, her acting career and much more!
