I wish Arsenio was back on. Didn't his show come on at 11? Man I'm not trying to be up at midnight sitting through crappy guests to see a musical performance. There needs to be a show like the chappelle show again, where the musical guests are on there, and the show is actually worth a damn.

Arsenio! Right on! Yeah, it did come on at 11, at least where I lived. I remember staying up to watch that show. I didn't get to see Johnny Carson or whatever other late-night shows were airing back then. Great stuff. Radiohead made their TV debut on his show, as well as countless hip-hop acts.
Watching music guests on "Last Call" would be at 2am, which is pretty ridiculous, but I guess that's what TiVo is for!

Here in Portugal, Arsenio's show was shown as a weekly. I guess it was a syndication package with the most memorable shows, and they were shown with at least a six month delay. His shows must have been my visual intro to many an Urban artist, since cable TV was still a far away reality in this country and my family couldn't afford a satellite dish, so therefore MTV Europe was all but a late-night dream. I reckon he was an important force to bring the then still new and exciting sounds of hip-hop and New Jack to a White bread audience. But my guess is that, should he return, he wouldn't have the same cultural impact he had back in the day, since what he was showing is now America's mainstream popular music. But my guess is that every Urban artist died to be in there, for a presence in his show would actually have a positive effect in his/her/their sales.

These days, it's commonplace to tune in Letterman and see Nas perform, Snoop Dogg on Leno, whatever. From what I understand, that wasn't at all the case when Arsenio was on the air, as his was the only show letting hip-hop artists on. And that's just the latenight talk show 'culture'.. not even getting into the shift over time with MTV and tv/movies/pop culture in general.

All I know about that is the album debuted in Canda at #7. Also not sure of their total Canadian sales to-date.

Bloc Party play rousing set at SXSWBloc Party performed a rousing set at Stubb's in Austin last night, bringing day two to a close. Taking to the stage just after midnight, opener 'Song for Clay (Disappear Here)' kicked off a 15-song set mainly made up of material from their recently released second album 'A Weekend in the City'. FrontmanKele Okereke was in upbeat form, enjoying banter with the crowd throughout the hour-long set, politely declining their incessant requests that he "get naked". They played: 'Song for Clay (Disappear Here)' 'Positive Tension' 'Blue Light' 'Hunting for Witches' 'Waiting for the 7.18' 'Banquet' 'This Modern Love' 'The Prayer' 'Uniform' 'I Still Remember' 'So Here We Are' 'Like Eating Glass' 'SRXT' 'She's Hearing Voices' 'Helicopter'

Bloc rock at Texas festivalSpeaking before the show, drummer Matt Tong said there was "nothing better than being surrounded by fellow musicians". "Being immersed in a big sloppy musical mess is something that is very definitely very exciting to us," Tong added. However, they admitted they are yet to achieve the same success they've enjoyed in the UK because the US take a lot more work. Tong said: "Once you get some kind of profile in the UK you know it is very easy for other people to access what it is that you do. Compared to the US, it's such a big country it takes a lot longer to 'work it'." The South by South West takes place over four days and attracts bands from all over the world.

Calvin Harris blasts Bloc PartyRising Scottish crossover star Calvin Harris has blasted Bloc Party, labelling them "rubbish, tedious and boring". The opening salvo in what could become a great rock feud was fired by an irate Harris over music he claimed takes itself "too seriously" and has no tunes. He added: "A lot of these people think they're changing the world with their music, but actually they're just boring the shit out of everyone. Like Bloc Party - they are rubbish. They make very tedious music. What kind of person is going to make all this music and not make one single tune? What's the point?" Speaking to The Big Issue in Scotland, Harris had kinder words for new superstar chum Kylie Minogue. It has been well publicised recently that the producer turned chart star had been asked to work on some tracks on Kylie's forthcoming new album. "She is so nice," he said, "the most down to earth superstar you could ever hope to meet - she made the tea in the studio." Harris is currently on tour across the UK with dance giants Faithless. His debut album, 'I Created Disco', is released in June. ------------------------------------------------------------------- No tunes? Now that’s rubbish! Anyways, I’ve always been a Kylie fan, so now I’m rooting for a collabo with Bloc Party.

42 50 7 Bloc Party A Weekend In The City; Wichita WEBB120CDL (U)
It moved up on the UK charts this week, but I'm not sure if it actually had a sales increase or not.
For an album that's only been out 7 weeks, it should be charting higher. Seems like a commercial failure by all accounts.

Yeah, hanging around outside the top 40 after less than two months isn't too impressive. Perhaps it will get a bump up with the release of another single. "I Still Remember" will be released April 9 in the UK.

Bloc Party Extend Never-Ending Tour With U.S. ShowsAnd the Bloc Party just don't stop. Approaching the final stretch on their present North American jaunt-- and bound for the old countries next month with Mahogany (reminder: arrive early!)-- touring juggernauts Bloc Party have just revealed a three-week U.S. coda to their already enormous trek in support of this year's A Weekend in the City. Oft-neglected minor American metropolises like Myrtle Beach and Asbury Park: Bloc Party cares about you! Even you, Pompano Beach, Florida. And to ensure Kele and band will have plenty of woe-is-rockstardom material for their next LP, they've even lined up some summer festival dates and Australian gigs. Or catch them from the comfort of your own arse on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on March 29 and "Last Call with Carson Daly" on April 6. What's more, Bloc Party release the next Weekend single-- "I Still Remember"-- on April 9. Conveniently/annoyingly, it comes in three formats, each boasting different B-side goodies. Children of the digital age can also score exclusive remixes by SebastiAn and the Chap at their favorite online retailer. "I Still Remember": CD: 01 I Still Remember 02 Selfish Son 03 I Still Remember (Music Box and Tears Mix) 7" (Gatefold): 01 I Still Remember 02 Atonement 7" (2): 01 I Still Remember 02 Cain Said to Abel New kids on the Bloc:

Bloc Party: Oasis Are The Most Overrated Band Ever Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke has launched a verbal attack on his old foes Oasis. The singer was reacting to comments Noel Gallagher made some months ago when he labelled Bloc Party as a band “off university challenge.” Upping the ante somewhat, Okereke has slammed the Manchester band, saying they made “stupidity hip.” He blasted: “I think Oasis are the most overrated and pernicious band of all time. They had a totally negative and dangerous impact upon the state of modern music. “They have made stupidity hip. They claim to be inspired by The Beatles but, and this so saddens me, they have failed to grasp that The Beatles were about constant change and evolution. Oasis are repetitive Luddites.” Asked about the University Challenge remark, Okereke continued to Uncut Magazine: "Well, It’s quite funny. It probably would have been a lot more funny had he not used exactly the same words to describe Travis a couple of years ago. "Having said that, it’s probably a very sad indication of the state of his mind. Why is it bad to better yourself? It’s all about the weird way in which this country chooses to view the working classes. "It is really daft to reinforce the idea that there is something cool about being dumb. The idea that your ambitions shouldn’t extend beyond getting pissed and watching the football really irks me. "It’s this idea that to be authentically working class you need to be untainted by the airy-fairy ephemera of education. And it seems to be pretty unique to this country."

Even though I like Oasis's first two albums, Kele's comments are OTM. What he says about Oasis's is influence on British music is precisely my point. Their smash success on the mid-90s created, whether we like to admit it or not, a backwards mentality on the British indie and guitar music scene that still continues to affect new acts today. And what's worse, most of these young guns end up not having a clue about the real origins of most of the music they are influenced by, thus creating future generations of musicians with a serious case of musical, um, multiple sclerosis. I mean, let's look at most of the guitar bands that became big in the UK after Britpop. Bar Radiohead, what other guitar bands have created their own vision, their own turfs, their own paradigms, without resorting mostly to emulation of past formulas? Exactly: almost none. This is the truth that must be said, as far as I'm concerned. No wonder most British guitar music doesn't register a blip outside of the White Isles.

I see what you're saying, and those characteristics are indeed evident not only in British guitar music, but in most other popular genres as well. Acts like Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs are sort of the British guitar music equivalent of Nickelback and Staind, except I much prefer the post-post-post Britpop sound to post-post-post grunge.
Personally, there are bands I still like even though they are 'guilty' of "resorting mostly to emulation of past formulas". Hell, I really liked Pearl Jam's latest album and they're well past the point of trying to tread any new musical ground for them. There might even be some truth to the notion that in PJ's case, I'm clinging to what's familiar, but I'm okay with that, because my goal is simply to find good music, or more accurately, music I enjoy. I'm more than content to listen to bands who don't try to re-invent themselves, provided they keep the quality coming. My Morning Jacket has been one of favorite bands for awhile now, and I don't really see an evolution of their sound, other than perhaps mastering what they were already good at. I like the Kaiser Chiefs' new album, even though they stuck with their formula. Even Bloc Party's AWITC, of which I'm obviously a fan, isn't that much of a departure from the group's debut.
On the other hand, it does seem like most of my all-time favorite artists are ones whose music evolved: Beatles, Radiohead, Clash, Prince, Beach Boys, U2... etc. So yeah, it would be great if more acts were encouraged or inspired to be more experimental.

They rocked on Letterman a few hours ago! Guess "The Prayer" IS single #2 here. They'll hit 100k next week, but I have serious doubts about the proverbial legs of this album. I think it may sadly be destined to commercial indifference. The critics & bad first single are to blame, mainly.

Bloc Party Frontman Loves Taking Ecstasy Kele Okereke admits he's a pill-head... Fresh from launching a verbal attack on Oasis, Bloc Party frontman has made another revelation – he loves taking ecstasy. The singer says he takes the Class A drug as it gives him a sense of “euphoria” and makes him appreciate music more. Okereke – who makes several references to drugs on the band’s latest album ‘A Weekend In The City’ – also says he is partial to cocaine apart from one glaring side effect. He said: "Cocaine can be very attractive, very seductive. But for me, it's bad news because that drug can really damage your voice. The drug I do enjoy taking is ecstasy, which gives a real sense of euphoria. “It makes your senses so much more acute. It makes music sound so powerful. And it makes touch incredibly sensual. You know, every touch is orgasmic.” However, in the interview with Uncut Magazine, he admits such behaviour is mainly routed in the past, saying: "These days I don't even bother with pills that often. To be honest, I haven't taken anything for a whole year."

Kasabian just had to fill the void in this fruitless BP vs Oasis battle.
"Let them go to war on it", he continued, "I'm sure Liam will have something to say about them anyway, I know he will. It’s all good fun. I'm not saying anything. You wait, it will be a while. I'll think of something soon. It’s all fun."
He's right!
