InTheMixThe Chemical Brothers debut new musicHaving kept a relatively low profile of late, the first murmurs of new music from The Chemical Brothers’ camp has surfaced online, the legendary electronica duo placing ‘Electronic Battle Weapon #9’ on their MySpace page last week. The ‘Electronic Battle Weapon’ series, previously only released on vinyl, has always given a taste of the Chems’ freshest music, albeit with a decidedly acidic approach. Although no details on their next album have been released, per se, the page does hold one cryptic comment for ardent fans of the duo’s work; “A small taste of what’s to come…” Check it out for yourself HERE, and remember to stay tuned to ITM for updates.

New Chemical Brothers album has a nameIt’s We Are The Night. No details known at this point about who the Bros might rope in as collaborators for this go-round. It should be out at some time “in the early summer” per Astralwerks (which I guess means Astralwerks will still exist as an entity at that point to release it). The duo has only announced European tour dates so far, but should be adding U.S. appearances to their itinerary soon. Stay tuned…

Pete Tong has been playing those "Electronic Battle Weapon" tracks on his show. They're really cool.

"All Rights Reversed" (featuring the Klaxons) "Do It Again" (featuring Ali Love) "The Salmon Dance" (featuring Fatlip) "Battle Scars" (featuring Willy Mason) "The Pills Won't Help You Now" (featuring Midlake) OK, so here are your token mainstream indie darlings du jour (Klaxons), your token backpacker rapper (Fatlip), your token UK "Urban" up-and-coming star (Ali Love), your token contemporary singer/songwriter (Willy Mason) and, finally, your token hipster esoteric indie flavor of the moment act (Midlake). All in all, it's pretty much the same formula of Push The Button. This doesn't bode very well, I'm afraid.

I know. Still, I've only heard the single. Can't say I was impressed, though. And even the remixes, while not bad, don't really help to elevate the song a bit higher. Looks like my lowered expectations might be coming true, I'm afraid.

I just wanna say that this album fucking sucks, and it's their worst yet. I'll elaborate further later if I actually find the patience to waste my brain cells on such dreck!

Oh well, it's Summer, the brain gets fried, and that certainly must have affected some of these critics' ears and sense too, probably...

Billboard review:
We Are the Night THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS Producer(s): The Chemical Brothers Label: Astralwerks
The Chemical Brothers certainly have their formula, but nearly 15 years on, their mix of rock-show beats and accessible synthetics remains a pleasing one. The Brothers have never strayed far from the rock'n'roll foundation that supports their best beats, but when this sixth CD opens with a cataclysm of "Transformers" noises, it signals a record that's a little more unapologetically electronic than their previous ones. The title track and hit first single "Do It Again" are born of the same hypnotic, churning code that the Brothers have been writing for years, but they also leave themselves space to plant little seeds of folky melody into their songs' mechanical exoskeletons on the oddly moving "Das Spiegel" and the epic "Burst Generator." They also score bonus points for employing rapper Fatlip to lay down vocals on the ridiculous and fully engaging "Salmon Dance." —Jeff Vrabel
On an unrelated note, there was a blind item in the PopBitch gossip newsletter a few months ago about The Chemical Brothers which stated that of the two of them, only one of them actively contributes stuff and does all the live stuff while the other one "mimes" because he can't do the stuff, so the one who does everything makes a lot more money and the other one voluntarily gets reduced amounts. That's so sad if it's true.

A new greatest hits collection will be released soon.
Here's the Billboard review:
Brotherhood THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS Release Date: Sept. 2 Producer(s): Tom Rowlands, Ed Simons Genre: ELECTRONIC Label: Astralwerks
The Chemical Brothers' Grammy Award-winning catalog of sonic booms gets its second best-of in five years with "Brotherhood." But this one does that rare thing: It gives fans something meaningful they didn't have before (in addition to token brand-new track "Keep My Composure"). Since '96, the Chems have made a habit of releasing works-in-progress on vinyl to a small group of select DJs to test them out on dancefloors. Most went on to become B-sides or album tracks on five of their six long-players, in extended, abbreviated or otherwise tweaked forms. All 10 of these "Electronic Battle Weapons" are included on disc two of "Brotherhood," offering a unique snapshot of the duo at work. Now, fans can track how "Weapon 3" became the tauter, more relentless "Under the Influence" (on 1999's "Surrender") or finally find that song from the live show with the Freddy Krueger sample ("Weapon 7"). —Kerri Mason
