Billboard:
ARTIST: CALVIN HARRIS
ALBUM: I CREATED DISCO (Almost Gold Records)
So far, this 23-year-old Scot has cut a public figure antithetical to the usual scrappy populists who hit the big time via MySpace. He's disaffected and snide, the kind of guy who would take credit for starting a genre that expired before his birth or make a track eschewing the entire record biz ("This Is Industry") before the release of his debut album. "I Created Disco" feels renegade, and that's what makes it more than irresistibly fun synth-pop. Harris favors analog synths over software, giving "Disco" a unique sonic heft. But where next-big-things like overly arty Fischerspooner and sampling trickster Mylo failed, Harris succeeds. This is an accessible album that post-grunge millennials -- kids still in the single digits when Kurt Cobain died -- can claim as their own.

I didn't even know this was getting a U.S. release. Talk about a lack of promo...

I better go buy it! Now there's a release that snuck on me. I hope Dragonette releases theirs here, too.

But where next-big-things like (...) sampling trickster Mylo failed, Harris succeeds. Excuse me?!?! ??? ??? If anything, Calvin Harris is succeeding because of the doors Mylo's success opened. But I shouldn't be surprised: America's mainstream music media outlets were always known for its general lack of background when it comes to dance or electronic music which doesn't have a more overtly pop or rock stance to it. Precisely what Calvin Harris has in spades. In that respect, I wouldn't be surprised if Dragonette also ended up having some sort of acclaim from the American mainstream music media, should their album be released in US soil. Oh, and I already stated in other instances that his album is somewhat uneven.

I thought too the album was uneven back when it was released in the UK. I picked it up again this week and it sounds great now.
And though the doors of American mainstream seem to be open to electronic music, I think it won't go much further than 10 years ago.

This is basically one of those albums that I knew would get trashed, yet I also knew I would buy it, anyway. I really don't care about other people's views at all; they have nothing to do with me. Life's far too short to deny one's self aural pleasures. I haven't been able to find it anywhere, tho >:3

He actually made the Independent albums chart, at #169, selling 900 copies so far... Next UK single is "Vegas", out next month.

I Created Disco was re-released in France yesterday with a bonus disc containing the following songs:
1. Rock N Roll Attitude ("The Girls" b-side) 2. We Are All The Same (iTunes bonus track) 3. Love For You ("Acceptable In The 80's" b-side) 4. Merrymaking At My Place (Mr. Oizo Remix) 5. Acceptable In The 80's (Tom Neville Remix) 6. The Girls (Groove Armada Remix) 7. The Girls (Acoustic Version)
They could have included "Wild Scenes" ("Merrymaking At My Place" b-side) and "Stillness In Time", his Jamiroquai cover from the Radio 1 . Established 1967 compilation.

I don't like to say these kinds of things, but let's face it: Calvin Harris is the perfect version of dance music for those who are not exactly that keen on dance music. It's an easy listening version of dance music, so to say. On the other hand, if Calvin, in the end, can serve as an entry door to further explore the thrills and joys of electronic dance music, so be it. There are worst ways to start digging for unearthed treasure, really. :)

Calvin Harris is the perfect version of dance music for those who are not exactly that keen on dance music. It's an easy listening version of dance music, so to say. I see where you're coming from, but I really consider I Created Disco a pop album, meaning that I would file it under the same category as Kylie, Roisin's latest and Girls Aloud, rather than with Groove Armada or Justice, for example. But then again, I'm the one who called Sally Shapiro's music 'indie italo disco', so I might just have a personal way of understanding what pop music is, LOL... ;) On the other hand, if Calvin, in the end, can serve as an entry door to further explore the thrills and joys of electronic dance music, so be it. There are worst ways to start digging for unearthed treasure, really. :) I agree with this. Months later, I still don't think the US mainstream is that more open towards dance music, even though "Calabria", Cascada or "Don't Stop The Music" are seeing some sort of success. Given that Justice's "D.A.N.C.E." went for adds at Pop radio just last week though, I'll be waiting to see what kind of impact it will have (it's #98 right now).
