MIMS: Why He's Hot The rapper talks all about his catchy new track, growing up in the 'hood and respecting the shoe game
By Laura Downey Mar 08, 2007 06:00PM EST
His debut album Music Is My Savior hasn't even been released yet, but that didn't stop Mims' first single, "This is Why I'm Hot," from heating up the charts. The song - which Shawn Mims, 25, wrote in less than two hours - holds the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart right now. So what makes this Washington Heights, N.Y.-native sizzle these days? "Being hot is not about what you have. It's about how you utilize your lifestyle," the rapper says. "If you drive a hooptie and have a good attitude you can get far in life, regardless of who you are or how much money you have." On a short break from touring, the scorching star made his first appearance at the legendary Apollo Theater and then hung out with TeenPeople.com at ATMOS in Harlem to tell us what he looks for when buying the perfect pair of sneakers.
TeenPeople.com: How did the song 'This is Why I'm Hot' come about? MIMS: I remember waking up one morning and one of my managers stopped by my house and dropped off a beat. I remember listening to the beat and said, "Let me just think of something." And the first words I thought of were, "This is Why I'm Hot." And I didn't have anything else to say so I was like, "This is Why I'm Hot." And I kept thinking and I was like, "This is Why, This is Why, This is Why I'm Hot." And the hook started coming to me. I could keep throwing it. "Hot cause I'm fly. You hate cause you not." I did the hook fresh out the head. I wrote the whole song in a couple of hours. It's just that easy.
TeenPeople.com: The song jumped to the top of the charts and you've become a star almost instantly. Does it all feel brand new? A: Yeah, I was saying cause I'm working so hard I'm out on the road I don't know when the point will come for me to really notice the stuff for the record - I just know that it's big and I know that I've gone everywhere that I can go to really support it so I think when I'm able to sit down and turn on my own TV and relax for a day or even two days than I think I'll finally realize how big everything really is. I think it's a blessing I hear the records I’m breaking - I heard I broke a record on Billboard Hot 100 as the third most increased record ever in history for jumping [from] number 32 and overnight go to number one on the chart. There's only been two other records that have beaten my record so when you start hearing history it's like a great word especially in the music business.
TeenPeople.com: Your album's out March 27. What can we expect? MIMS: I represent New York to the fullest, but it's time to see a different perspective of New York - a more fun side. What I'm showcasing with the album are some deep topics about my life, how I grew up and at the same time I wanted to balance it off with a record that I think people are gonna enjoy. You tend to talk about the struggle all the time and never really realize how it influences the younger audience. I want to be able to make music that the younger audience can dance, sing to and have fun with - that way they're not just hearing the struggle and not just being put in a depressed mood.
TeenPeople.com: The CD is called Music Is My Savior. Why? MIMS: I chose the album title because it's an acronym for my name MIMS - "music is my savior." And if you know anything about some of the hardships I went through growing up - like losing both my parents at a young age. I never really grew up with my father. My mother raised me. By the age of 11 my mother told me that my father passed away. But when I was 13 and my mom passed away, it was a reality check. So I think for any child growing up without parents it would have been easy to build every excuse I could to become a drug dealer or to rob people. In Washington Heights people get caught in the system, become another statistic and don't make it out. By 17, I transferred over to Westbury High School in Long Island and it allowed me to be a dreamer. It motivated me to really pursue the music thing a lot harder. I could've used that pain as an excuse but instead I did the opposite. I stayed in school - I got straight A's - and eventually spent one year at Nassau Community College, where I studied math and science because that's what I was good at.
TeenPeople.com: Surviving all that, you still followed your dreams. MIMS: I don't make any excuses for myself. There have been times where I've had a lot of money in my pockets. And gone to having no money. As for the music thing, not once did I say I'm not worth being in this business, I'm not worth doing this, I can do something else. I followed my dreams. I followed my heart 110% and I stuck to it - not one excuse for being an entertainer. That's why I'm here today.
TeenPeople.com: So is the 'hot' guy single? MIMS: I'm involved with somebody at the moment. She's wonderful. She holds me down, keeps me focused and that's important especially for me because I do get a lot of attention from ladies and if I wasn't focused I'd probably be out there messing up.
TeenPeople.com: How many pairs of sneakers do you own? MIMS: Right now I don't have a collection. I'm the type of dude that if they get dirty I'm not gonna wear them again. Or I might wear them for something else maybe like playing ball. So usually I go through a lot of sneakers so I say at any given time I probably have anywhere between 10 to 15 pairs just on reserve. I hate to say this because I don't like to sound like this - [pointing to the Timberland boots he has on his feet] these are my third pair of Timbs this week. They are brand new so it's real important to keep your shoe game on point because that's the first thing a lot of ladies look at is shoes.
TeenPeople.com: What do you look for when trying to find the right pair of sneakers? MIMS: Honestly, I like sneakers that can fit a couple of different outfits. There are people out there that are real sneaker junkies - they get one pair of sneakers for one outfit. I'm a little different. I like my sneakers to be a little bit plain so that I could wear it with a couple of things.
TeenPeople.com: Do you have a favorite sneaker designer? MIMS: With the market today you see a lot of trendy things. It really just depends on my mood. I'm a real Stan Smith Adidas type of person because they're real plain but then I mix it up - I mix and match it. I could do the Vans, I could do the Nikes, I could do the Air Forces - I have a couple pairs of everything. That's the real way to do it. Don't limit yourself to just one shoe keep your shoe game with a variety of shoes - styles, different types of colors - everything.

lol. His album will probably sell as much as Jibbs did. I don't get why these pointless rappers even try when they put out nothing but crap.
