Here's a review from someone who was in attendance last night at Lauryn's show in Atlanta, GA. This was taken from another message board, so feel free to click on the link to be taken to the original post: fugeesonline.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=lauryn&action=display&thread=3605Okay, I just got in from the Lauryn Hill concert (Atlanta). She was only an hour late...which I think is an improvement. It was awesome! She rocked it yo! She seems to be getting stronger with every show, and tonight was example of that. She sounded great. The band was still a little too loud but they seemed to respond to her direction quickly and take things down a bit to accomplish a more even sound. When Lauryn stepped on stage, the crowd went into an all out frenzy. The reception she received was incredible! It went on for a while. Lauryn even got a little teary eyed. It didn't seem as though she expected such a response and seemed to be quite was really overwhelmed by it in the moment. She kept saying “wow” and shaking her head in disbelief. It was great to see. I got stuck watching for minute because the aura that woman carries is intoxicating. It was such a surreal moment. I know that sounds O.D. but it really was like that. It's amazing how much swagger this 35 year-old woman with 5 children has. It's clear she has aged and looks as a wise woman, but on stage, she is 25 again. The energy is bananas. One thing that caught my attention was the two huge crosses she had hanging from her neck (I have a theory about that one). I didn’t know she wore crosses. I’ve never seen her wear them before. And on Forever Loving Jah, she explained that when she says Jah, it means God too. Never heard say that before either. Although I thought that she said God in the first line of that song at the Charlotte concert. Just an observation. Anyway, I digress. I was on the floor about three rows back and let me tell you, that whole first row showered Lauryn with gifts, notes, a framed picture of some sort, and other miscellaneous items. She seemed very appreciative. She even shook every outstretch hand in the front row before leaving the stage. Of course the first song was Forever Loving Jah, and after the song she told us that she wanted to get comfortable and went and took her shoes off. That was funny. Ya’ll know she loves those pumps. Anyway, there was a little bit of bewilderment going on during the first few songs with the new arrangements and all. I heard a few people grumbling, some left, and some just kept going to get alcohol. But those of us who stayed were treated to a great performance and once she did Fugee La, it was over!! Everyone was in! One of my friends was up in the stadium seating and she said it was nuts up there as well. I’m interested to see what the reviews will be like. According to my friend, she says she thought it was about 80/20…in favor of Lauryn. Oh, and yeah, so I tried to get an interview with Lauryn tonight for a Georgia Public Broadcasting story. Well that was part of my cover. I’m really trying to interview her because she is the topic of my thesis. Anyway, I tracked down her road manager via Lauryn’s bass players (that was funny) and he basically said no (lol) because they have to know ahead of time what press will be in the building to arrange any such interviews. But he did give me the name and contact information of her publicist. But the interesting thing was he told me that she would be back in Atlanta in a couple of months. I even confirmed it after I got the info from him but he didn’t tell me why she would be back in Atlanta. I don’t remember her having another show here, anybody have any ideas about that one? Anyhow, I will keep all of you posted on my adventures of getting to Lauryn. Okay, know this post is all over the place but it’s late so forgive me. ![](http://s3.amazonaws.com/twitpic/photos/large/225399930.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=0ZRYP5X5F6FSMBCCSE82&Expires=1295118281&Signature=NjXuXNe540Lme4c6NvMhkgLyO30%3D)

Is that reviewer surprised she speaks God's name or something? Did they ever listen to Zion?

Here's a press review from Lauryn's show last night in St. Louis, MO. Feel free to click on the link underneath the title of the review to be taken to the original article: Review: Ms. Lauryn Hill at the Pageant in St. Louis, January 16blogs.riverfronttimes.com/atoz/2011/01/ms_lauryn_hill_review_2011_setlist_st_louis_pageant_january_16_fugees.php#commentsBy Annie Zaleski, Mon., Jan. 17 2011 @ 4:53AM Ms. Lauryn Hill's difficult reputation precedes her. She shows up for most shows way past the scheduled start time. (And that's if she shows up at all.) She's been known to berate crowds which heckle her -- and she's radically reinvented many of her best-known songs, so much so that they're almost unrecognizable. (And that's not even counting performances that might charitably be described as "shaky.") In other words, being a Hill fan is often a frustrating proposition. Anyone expecting a trainwreck last night at the Pageant would come away mighty disappointed, however. Hill's concert was incredible. Yes, incredible. First, the build-up to her appearance onstage - which occurred at 11:52 p.m., a little over 50 minutes after the supposed start time - had just the right amount of anticipation. As DJ Rampage merrily spun hits in the background, her band casually sauntered onstage: two guitarists, two keyboardists, two bassists and a drummer. A few minutes later, three female backup singers assembled themselves in a row. And then ten minutes after that, Ms. Lauryn Hill, her hair arranged in a close-cropped, helmet-like afro, emerged from backstage. The crowd went absolutely berserk at the sight of the 35-year-old, who was sporting a smart cream-colored tailored pantsuit over a dark brown shirt. Notably, Hill also wore a shrug that had a gigantic fur collar; it kept slipping off her shoulders, but she kept it on all night. Immediately, she announced her intentions for the concert: "We're going to do old music in new ways." And that she did, for the first half of the show. "When It Hurts So Bad" featured prominent watery piano and a tortured, scorching guitar solo in the middle, while the laid-back hip-hop of "Lost Ones" morphed into a hyperactive soul-funk revue. An early highlight, "Final Hour," was even more ferocious; it became an amped-up rap-rock song. Hill spat the lyrics furiously and at dizzying speed. (Eat her dust, Nicki Minaj.) "Ex-Factor," however, was perhaps the biggest departure - and probably the most polarizing song. Hill and the band basically performed the song two different ways: once as a loud, rap-rock number and the other in a mellower fashion, with U2-esque lullaby guitars and backup singers chirping like delicate angels. During this particular song, it was clear that the audience was unenthused by Hill's reinvention. People stood still and unresponsive; a few even left. Those who stuck around, however, witnessed some remarkable music. "I suppose you wouldn't mind if we did a few Fugees records," Hill announced to the crowd. (She supposed right.) Keyboards zoomed like a martian landing to introduce the energy-shot "How Many Mics," another insanely fast tongue-twister. And the similar blur "Fu-Gee-La" was simply bananas: The crowd and the entire band jumped in unison, as Hill just commanded the stage and the song's lyrics with precision and snarling intensity. Hill then asked for the stage and house lights to be dimmed -- the perfect mood-setter for a stellar version of "Ready Or Not," which had a seedy, crackling beat and sinister bass. "Killing Me Softly" kept ratcheting up the energy; it started off slow and mellow and ended up a brash funk-rock workout that stopped and started at Hill's whim. The encore's highlight, of course, was "Doo Wop (That Thing)." As the song's familiar plinking piano chords began, the crowd embraced it with joyous abandon. Throughout the night, Hill herself was lucid and gracious. She thanked the audience multiple times for coming to the show and any ribbing she gave her band mates was good-natured and meaningful: "Band - don't waste this tune," she said at one point. "You're responsibility is to move them [the crowd]." A gravelly, smoky tint to her voice made her singing sound mature and weathered, but in a good way; Hill sounds like she inhabits the intimate sentiments of her songs even more deeply than before. Her rapping, meanwhile, was spot-on and impressively fluid and quick. In fact, Hill oozed confidence - whether she was directing the band to go in a certain direction with a flick of her arm, dancing like a bow-legged ballerina or strutting across the stage with assertive, aggressive movements. There was nothing tentative about her performance - nothing to indicate anything less than devout sincerity and genuine engagement. Her phenomenal backing band helped match her swagger. The only complaint was that they were turned up rather loud - sometimes to the point of distortion, and often so loud than genre nuance became muffled or lost under layers of noise. Still, their grasp of dynamics brought Hill's songs to life. The slow, steady build in tempo and intensity within many of the set's individual songs was an emotionally stirring experience. In fact, the set was paced very well overall. Still, it's easy to see why fans were disappointed in Hill's new arrangements. Hearing a beloved artist deconstruct a favorite, meaningful song isn't easy - and often, it isn't welcome (or an improvement). But perhaps Hill is reinventing her music to avoid boredom, or perhaps she's doing it to challenge herself musically. Or perhaps Hill's revisions are a defense mechanism, a way for her to continue performing these songs with enough emotional detachment that their vulnerability doesn't cripple her. Splicing old sentiments with new genres creates new associations that are no less valid or absorbing - but they might be less raw than they were before. For now, analysis fades behind the memory of last night's kinetic, vibrant show -- and the powerful messages contained within it. At the end of "Ex-Factor," for instance, Hill expressed some compelling, evocative sentiments. "St. Louis, we care," she said. "Be love - be present - be fearless - don't compromise. We're going to be fearless." The mantra fit her performance to a tee. Critic's Notebook: I'm confused why anyone was upset - or surprised -- about the show's late start time. The Pageant clearly stated that doors were at 9 p.m. for last night's show.Doors. The venue had no actual start time listed, probably because Hill regularly starts her shows very, very late - and even they didn't know when she would come onstage. When people showed up at the venue, we were told that show time was slated to be around 11 p.m. Hill ended up coming on at 11:52 p.m. This also shouldn't be a total shock; she's been coming on late for months now. Most of the grumbling about the show starting late seemed confined to social media anyway. DJ Wood kept the crowd highly entertained for two hours by playing a solid, danceable mix of hip-hop, soul, reggae and rap; the vibe was festive, celebratory and happy. People around me were dancing, singing along and generally enjoying themselves. DJ Rampage came onstage around 11 p.m. and kept the good feelings coming. In fact, the atmosphere at the Pageant was extremely positive and fun - perhaps the most loose, respectful crowd I've seen at the venue in a long time. Waiting several hours didn't feel like a chore. Perhaps that's why the show was such a success. As we were leaving the Pageant, Hill was still at the back of the venue in a car - and apparently hanging out the window and talking to fans, who were crowded around trying to snap pictures. People were yelling, "I love you!" and other things. It was incredible that she was still there, much less greeting people. Setlist:"Forever Loving Jah" (Bob Marley) "Lost Ones" "When It Hurts So Bad" "Ex-Factor" "Final Hour" "How Many Mics" (Fugees) "I Only Have Eyes For You" (Flamingos cover) "Fu-Gee-La" (Fugees) "Ready or Not" (Fugees) "Killing Me Softly" (cover) Encore:"Turn Your Lights Down Low" (Bob Marley) "Doo Wop (That Thing)"

Here's a press review from Lauryn's show last night in Minnesota: Hip-hop hurray for Lauryn Hill at First Avefwix.com/twincities/share/fceaa317e7/hip-hop_hurray_for_lauryn_hill_at_first_aveAfter a long absence and a late start, the rap/soul superstar delivers an unexpected unforgettable performance. By JON BREAM, Star Tribune Last update: January 19, 2011 - 5:52 AM Lauryn Hill had two strikes against her. Like Sade, the Grammy-grabbing hip-hop/soul superstar has been largely absent from the stage and recording studio for almost a decade. When she does book a rare gig, Hill, like Sly Stone, Prince and Courtney Love, is notorious for showing up late. With an advertised 9 p.m. start time Tuesday at First Avenue, the sell-out throng was thrilled when the screen in front of the stage went up at 11:32 -- only to reveal a DJ, not Hill. As he spun hip-hop hits, he announced: "Ms. Hill is in the building." A band eventually joined the DJ and then, at 11:54, it was finally star time. For the next 109 minutes, Hill gave the kind of performance that nobody had the right to expect. She was loose, organic and emphatic. She seemed fully committed to her words, band and performance. She was in the moment, and she was kickin' it. In short, this was truly a superstar turn, the kind of concert that people will be talking about for years. On her first extensive solo tour (well, 17 shows is extensive for her) since 1999, Hill, 35, has been receiving mixed reviews. Her tardiness has often put critics and concertgoers in a foul mood. When she arrived on the First Avenue stage, the stylishly retro dressed diva started yakking, a habit that has sometimes led to misguided diatribes and public meltdowns. However, she was impressed by the packed club and "eclectic mix of people." She welcomed them with Bob Marley's "Forever Loving Jah" and then made her mission clear: "Let's set the mood and chase out all the negativity." Hill did both. Mixing material from her landmark 1998 solo album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" and 1996's "The Score" by her hip-hop trio, the Fugees, she reasserted her reputation as a fast, fierce and formidable rapper. Surprisingly, her singing was newly hoarse but heartfelt. Her voice either is not in shape for the road or she has to sing so hard over her loud but excellent band that she's straining. Her vocal deficiencies were especially noticeable on the Fugees' treatment of "Killing Me Softly" when neither her lower or upper register had the color heard on the group's hit recording. On the Flamingos' "I Only Have Eyes for You," she had to rely on her three splendid female backup singers to carry the doo-wop vocals. Nonetheless, Hill was totally invested in her singing, often seizing a lyrical line and riffing on it over and over again. She was equally spontaneous with her nine musicians (including three keyboardists, two bassists and a DJ), calling out changes in arrangements or conducting with her hand. The songs were strikingly reimagined, with textures and tempos changing dramatically. What a stark contrast to Hill's last local gig, a solo acoustic effort on the multi-act Smokin' Grooves Tour at Target Center in 2002. Near the end of Tuesday's set, after her sexy talk-sing treatment of Marley's "Turn Your Lights Down Low," Hill ordered a spotlight to be shone on "the father of my [five] children" sitting in the balcony -- Rohan Marley, Bob's son, who had surprised her by showing up in Minneapolis. Now that may explain her marvelous mood and our good fortune ![](http://apps.startribune.com/blogs/user_images/jonbream_1295436664_mshill.jpg)

Another review from someone who was in attendance at Lauryn's show last night in Minnesota. Ms. Lauryn Hill at First Avenue, 1/18/11blogs.citypages.com/gimmenoise/2011/01/ms_lauryn_hill.phpBy Andrea Swensson, Wed., Jan. 19 2011 @ 2:24AM Ms. Lauryn Hill January 18, 2011 First Avenue, Minneapolis Everyone loves a scintillating, juicy headline. That's the only plausible explanation I can think of for all the hoopla surrounding Ms. Hill's current tour, as an overwhelming majority of people online and in attendance at the show were buzzing about how late she would come onstage and whether or not it would be an unmitigated disaster. It only took a few minutes for those fears to evaporate, however, as Hill appeared and made her way through an hour-and-50-minute set that was powerful and profound, holding the packed crowd rapt right up until the end. "They told me the show was sold out," she remarked at the beginning of her set, scanning the crowd and beaming. "This is like really, really sold out. Look at this eclectic mix of people! I love it, this is great." Looking like the hip-hop version of Annie Hall with her tan felt hat, wide-leg trousers, and black furry vest layered over a red, sparkly sweater, Hill took the stage around 11:50 p.m., only 50 minutes past her scheduled start time and 20 minutes after her DJ and band filed out to hype up the crowd (since when did we start demanding that iconic musicians be so punctual, anyway?). She started off with a cover of Bob Marley's "Forever Loving Jah" before launching into a set of what she called her "classics" -- a handful of cuts off her debut and only solo album,The Mis-Education of Lauryn Hill. Backed by nearly a dozen musicians and backup singers, Hill reworked much of her older material into lush new arrangements, at times motioning frantically to her band to highlight certain instruments or pick up the pace. The beginning of the performance climaxed with a downright transcendent, soulful rendition of "Ex-Factor" that had more than a few concertgoers wiping tears from their eyes, which bled seamlessly into another heartbreaking ballad, "To Zion." With the crowd still recovering from that emotional bludgeoning, Hill kicked off her shoes and coyly asked, "How many Fugees fans do we have in Minneapolis?" She was clearly digging the vibe in the Mainroom, as she paused several times to marvel over the packed and adoring crowd and inserted "Minneapolis" into practically every song. Though her rapping on the Fugees songs ("How Many Mics," "Zealots") was spot-on and intense, the crowd was hesitant to move with the music, and Hill did her best to whip up her band with a "pep talk" and get the audience jumping up and down. Though the full-band arrangements did much to accentuate her more melodic songs, the Fugees songs seemed to drag a bit with the addition of so many live instruments. That is, until the final one-two punch of "Ready or Not" and "Killing Me Softly," the latter of which started out with just Hill and her keyboard player and built into a full-band, full-room freakout. For the encore, Hill came out and launched immediately into another Marley cover, "Turn Your Lights Down Low," and paused mid-song to introduce the crowd to the reggae legend's son and the father of her five children, Rohan Marley, who was seated at a table in the balcony. "There he is!" she pointed proudly, asking the club to shine a spotlight on him as she dedicated the cover to him. "For us, it's not 'I want to give you some good, good loving,'" she joked. "It's I want to give you some good, good baby-sitting time. I don't even know how many kids we have now." As the clock neared 1:30 a.m. Hill asked if she could play one more -- and with the crowd more than sated from her lengthy set, her call-and-response rendition of "Doo Wop (That Thing)" was a joyous and celebratory victory lap. Critics' Bias: I went in expecting that there wouldn't be a trainwreck. Much like Hole's much-hyped show in the Mainroom last summer, people seem to exaggerate small missteps or disgruntled fans in a really sensationalized way as if they almost want these artists to fail, especially when it comes to strong female artists who aren't afraid to show some personality on stage or have an off night. The crowd: Easily one of the most diverse crowds I've ever seen in the Mainroom. Also quite pushy toward the beginning of the night -- as my friend Robyn Lewis tweeted, "Peeps are real defensive over their $55 plot of land over here!" Overheard in the crowd: "No one is dancing!" complained the concertgoer next to me, who couldn't believe how many people were just standing and staring. Random notebook dump: Hill made several remarks toward the end of her set about wanting to come back soon. "We gotta do this more often, we gotta see each other face-to-face more often," she said. I hope she meant it. Set List:Forever Loving Jah (Bob Marley) Lost Ones When it Hurts So Bad Ex-Factor To Zion Final Hour How Many Mics I Only Have Eyes For You/Zealots Fu-Gee-La Ready or Not Killing Me Softly Encore:Turn Your Lights Down Low (Bob Marley) Doo Wop (That Thing) ![](http://blogs.citypages.com/gimmenoise/P1140163.jpg)

KANYE WEST, LAURYN HILL TO PLAY COACHELLAThe Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival is getting a healthy dose of hip-hop and R&B this year. The three-day concert, normally dominated by indie and rock acts, will see appearances from Lauryn Hill, Cee Lo Green, Erykah Badu, Wiz Khalifa, and a headlining set from Kanye West this April. The 2011 festivities kick off on Friday, April 15, with performances from Cee Lo Green and Lauryn Hill, noted on the flyer as Ms. Lauryn Hill. The former Fugees member has been playing intimate shows in the U.S. and abroad over the past year following an extended absence from music. On Saturday, April 16, Erykah Badu, Raphael Saadiq, and Lil’ B will take the stage at Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif., along with dozens of other acts including Arcade Fire. Wiz Khalifa, Nas and Damian Marley, M.I.A. protégée Rye Rye, and U.K. import Tinie Tempah will sweat it out in the desert sun on Sunday, April 17, while Kanye West closes out the festival at night. Although he performed in 2006, the G.O.O.D. Music rapper has never headlined. He joins the rare company of Jay-Z and the Beastie Boys of hip-hop acts who have headlined in the past. So, I have had a chance to get some sleep since attending Lauryn's show last night at the House of Blues (Chicago, IL). This is going to be relatively short and sweet, but I overall had a great time, and would highly recommend that if she comes to your neck of the woods, DON'T hesitate to cop a ticket. As far as the whole issue of tardiness, etc. is concerned, I received an email notification from Ticketmaster/Live Nation well enough if advance to know that showtime had been pushed back to 11 p.m., and that's exactly when I arrived at the venue (had no problems with parking, or waiting in a ridiculous line, etc.). Not 5 minutes after I made it into the main stage area, her DJ had begun to spin some great hip-hop classics & current favorites to keep the crowd pumped. Everyone was dancing, having a great time. Not once did I get a sense (at least from the people around me) that they were getting restless. He spun for a little under an hour, and the band gradually made their way out on stage during his set, with Lauryn (sorry, Ms. Hill) beginning around 11:55 p.m. Once she arrived on stage, she seemed quite taken with (and took a few minutes to revel in..) the overwhelming love and support she received from the crowd (packed house, by the way...), and made several references to Chicago throughout her entire set (both in her songs and spoken interludes between each selection). I'm not going to go through the setlist, as it was exactly what she has been performing night after night (except she didn't perform "To Zion," which I believe she performed earlier in the tour). This show was a complete 360 degrees from the last time I saw her at The Congress Theatre in 2004. She was engaged, enthusiastic, energetic, and exciting to watch (sorry for all the e's - wasn't intentional - lol.). All this while displaying an air of confidence and humility at the same time. She seemed genuinely happy to be back on stage and re-connecting with the public. As for the re-worked versions of her songs from TMOLH, I saw this from a completely different perspective than most. Since I am not typically inclined to sing along at concerts, to see her re-work these songs in a way that made the majority of the them completely unrecognizable was a positive in my book. I listened to these as though I was listening to new music of her's for the first time. The arrangements & instrumentation, all seemed to be very well thought out (contrary to the popular opinion that she was just winging it as she went along). The only thing that brought a sense of familiarity was the lyrics. In my eyes, this means good things for her future, as she is clearly invested in "creating" as opposed to just rehashing old hits in the same fashion that they were created in the 90's. She did give a disclaimer that she would be performing some classics from the album, but that they had been re-worked. Although I could tell the crowd took a minute to see where she was going with each song, I was in view of the exit, and didn't see one person leave early. I will point out that the two versions (rock/smoothed out) of "Ex-Factor" she performed were incredible, and for a moment when she was improvising during the smoothed-out version of the song, I could tell that people were really getting emotionally caught up (myself included). Once she began the Fugees segment of the show, it was a wrap. The crowd went bananas for song after song, and from my view, it was awe-inspiring to see the crowd react in such a unified fashion (jumping, dancing, singing/rapping along, etc.) She took a similar approach with "How Many Mics" to that of the earlier performed "Ex-Factor" as she performed two versions of the song (an intense hip-hop/rock infusion, and then a more laid-back almost ballad approach), which were both equally appealing for entirely different reasons. Despite seeming to have a great time on stage, you could tell she means business when it comes to the logistical aspects of the performance (particularly, the sound). I will say if you or anybody you know will be doing the sound for a Ms. Lauryn Hill show, make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before, stretch before the show, and drink lots of water, cause you/they are in for a WORKOUT! Do not expect to just set the levels, and go grab a drink/sandwich. (I am sure most authentic sound professionals don't do this, i'm just saying...lol.) Between her seeming to have issues with her earpiece all night, each song required different levels for each instrument and the backup singers based on the dynamics/nuances of each song. That would probably be the only thing that I would say was somewhat distracting to watch throughout the night, but if you just closed your eyes during certain songs, you would begin to hear/understand what she was trying to accomplish (and in many cases she did). This was especially true during her rendition of "I Only Have Eyes For You." Particularly, the vocal arrangement for the backup singers during this song was quite impressive, yet subtle at the same time. A funny moment to watch was at the beginning of "Doo Wop (That Thing)" when the keys were supposed to begin the song, but neither she or the audience could hear them clearly. Not only did she motion to the sound man to bring the keys up, but proceeded to stop the song entirely until they got the sound right (took me back to my church youth choir days!) Finally, there were a couple interesting moments that took place at the end of the show. As Ms. Hill was finishing up and thanking the fans for coming out, she proceeded to shake a fan's hand before leaving, except the fan didn't want to let go, and ended up pulling her to the floor. Before security could make it out to attend the situation, she was a true pro, and had a one-on-one discussion with the fan and they calmly let her go. Right after that, a fan bum rushed the stage, and was accosted by security, but she told them to let the fan go, and gave them a long hug. It was actually quite endearing to see her not only interact with the fans, but turn what potentially could have been a disastrous moment, into another chance to connect with her public on an even more personal level. Overall, this show was everything I hoped it would be and more (and I will admit, I still went in with high expectations). Based on everything I witnessed, I can say that I am very anxious to see what Ms. Hill has in store for the future. ![](http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc513/chiguy2006/MsLaurynHillTicket-1.jpg)
