Update On Mya!!!!!!!!
Mya Album Preview: Liberation
Since we’re caught up in Mya fever (Can you tell?), we thought we’d hit you off with a preview of her fourth album Liberation. The album has changed quite a bit since we first heard it last August. Noticeably absent from the current tracklisting are “Ayo” (Chris Henderson), “How We Carry” (J.R. Rotem), “Mercy” (Scott Storch), and “I Got That” (Scott Storch), the song with The Game which was one of our favorites. There were 13 tracks as of our listening session. Guests include Lil’ Wayne, Snoop Dogg, and Charli Baltimore. If you don’t know by now, Liberation drops June 26th.
Please do not copy and paste this preview on other sites/forums. We ask that you please link to it if you want to share.
1. “Liberation”
2. “I Am” featuring Charli Baltimore Produced by Kwame
This is a song that both the fellas and ladies can get into. You have Mya holding her ground and letting everyone know that she’s holding her man down. She doesn’t just want to be his woman, but she’s “that freak, that wife, that ride or die chick.” A pleasant surprise is female rapper Charli Baltimore (replacing Penelope Jones) making her way back on the scene with her consistent raw Philly flow. Both Mya and Charli compliment the throbbing beat with their vocals.
3. “Walka Not A Talka” featuring Snoop Dogg Produced by J.R. Rotem
Look out for this song because it’s slated to be Mya’s second single. The song begins with the sound of a siren, which instantly grabs your attention. She addresses her listeners by saying, “I never should’ve left you.” Her sound is like an innocent little Betty Boop. It’s very soft and pure even though she’s singing, “Gs up! Throw it up!” The beat gives you a feel as if you’re in a California parking lot, pimping at the drive-in movie. Snoop adds on to that organic Cali ambiance.
4. “Still A Woman” Produced by Scott Storch
You can’t help but pay attention to the powerful sound of the drums thumping through this song. When the drop comes, it’s very intense. Here Mya is letting it be known that she doesn’t work or play like your ordinary prissy woman. She declares that she’s “always on the hustle doing what a man would do.” “I need to be reminded that I’m still a woman,” she sings. Mya can definitely hang with the fellas.
5. “No Touchin’” Produced by Detail
This track sounds like it has two cultural sounds combined into one. It has an ancient tribal beat and an oriental sound to it. Very different and unusual, which brings some diversity to the album. You can say that this is the most sexy and seductive song on the album. It’s very sensual.
6. “Lock U Down” featuring Lil’ Wayne Produced by Scott Storch
Bringing Mya out of hiding was this single that’s currently being played on radio. The guitar plays a major part in the sound of the song. Mya is exposing what kind of man she wants and needs, and is also making it known that when she runs across that special guy, she’s going to lock him down. Her angelic voice goes well with Lil’ Wayne’s Southern accent. 2007’s #1 feature rapper holds his ground with his verse.
7. “Lights Go Off” Produced by Carvin & Ivan
Another sexy track. Mya’s tone is low and very subtle. The strong use of the piano adds on to the sex appeal. She’s letting it be known that when the lights go off, there will be grown folk’s business going down. “The moment the lights go off, that’s when you hear the ooh’s and ahh’s.” Grown folks know what that means.
8. “Ridin’” Produced by Tricky Stewart
This song is actually based on a true story that happened to Mya. She was in a relationship when she found out her man was cheating, so she went riding around town in her car looking for him. She begins the hard vocal song by saying, “I can’t believe this shit.” She sounds very frustrated and fed-up with the situation. This is definitely a song that most women can relate to.
9. “Switch It Up” Produced by Carvin & Ivan
Mya is showing her man a different side of her. She’s being his waitress, his mistress, his everything, but not for long. She’s being all these things as a soon to be slap in the face for cheating on her. The beat is a hard hand clap which goes well with the hard lyrics. Mya wants to give her man something to remember her by before she leaves him. She continues to “Switch It Up” at the end of the song when she begins a little rap verse. This is something people aren’t used to hearing from Mya.
10. “Give a Chick a Hand” Produced by Paula Pete
A new kind of futuristic crunk sound of music. It’s uncommon what Mya is doing in this song. She’s actually giving kudos to the woman who stole her man. She knows she’s hot, but wants to learn how the next woman actually got what was hers. A different approach to the typical “she stole my man” song.
11. “All in the Name of Love” Produced by J.R. Rotem
Close your eyes when you listen to this song and think about what scary movie it reminds you of. You might be reminded of the chilling theme song from the classic scary movie Halloween. The drop is very hard even though Mya is singing very softly.
12. “Life Is Too Short” Produced by Bryan-Michael Cox
In an instant you can tell that this is a B. Cox track. In the beginning the piano is the only sound you hear. The title speaks for itself. Mya isn’t going to dwell on anything bad that has happened in her past. She’s forgetting all those things that don’t matter. She strongly expresses that “life is too short for tears.” We won’t catch Mya crying over spilled milk anytime soon.
13. “Nothin’ At All” Produced by Tricky Stewart
This track was a pleasant way to end the album. It sounds like snap music but in slow motion. Mya addresses plenty of issues that have occurred in her life in the industry. It’s very personal and true. She declares, “Everybody keeps saying how I fell off.” With that said and every other barrier put up in front of her, she’s happy and would never change a thing. In this ballad, she clearly is singing her soul out. You can hear and feel her passion. Every line of the song has meaning behind it, even when she sings, “What don’t kill you makes you stronger, stand up longer.” Absolutely a great way to end this intense album.

I Found Another Mya's Album Preview On Another Message Board, Unlike Rap-Up Positive and Uplifting Review!!!!!!! This Review Is Very Blunt And Horrible Towards Mya's Newest Effort!!!!! Take A Look!!!!!!!!!
Mya 'Liberated' On New Album But Not Set Free (J) Liberation: Mya (Listening Session @ Sony Studios)
UBG received an invitation to a listening session for Mya and here is my review of her forthcoming album "Liberation."
Mya's fourth release "Liberation" is set to hit stores June 26th via Universal Motown. The album's first single, the lukewarm "Lock U Down" (featuring Lil' Wayne), has been sent to urban radio and the video has just been released. Produced by Scott Storch, this single doesn't pack an immediate punch like Mya's previous lead singles (the top-5 smash "It's All About Me" or "The Best of Me").
The album was originally due last fall but has been bumped from the schedule a number of times since. "Litigations, court, transitioning from label to label, teaching kids and building a studio, that takes a while," the 27-year-old singer recently told Billboard.com. "That's why this album is a lot more aggressive, very honest, in your face and cut and dry."
After listening to the entire album, I got the sense of what she was trying to do but the results are lackluster at best. This album is a step back from her last album "Moodring," which I felt was the album where Mya had a sense of purpose, knew what she wanted to do musically and challenged herself. A lack of promo and certain singles not being released lead to that album's downfall.
The newest 12-track album features production from Carvin & Ivan, Scott Storch, Bryan-Michael Cox, Tricky Stuart and Kwame. Charli Baltimore, Lil Wayne and Snoop make guest appearances.
As I mentioned earlier, the first single, "Lock U Down," is Mya's weakest lead single yet. It isn't memorable and doesn't stay in your head. For someone who is supposed to be Timbaland's rival, Scott Storch didn't deliver. Storch also produced "Still A Woman," where Mya sings about reminding herself that she's still a woman and still needs a little love despite always being on the hustle like a dude.
The JR Rotem-produced "Walka Not a Talka," which is being considered as the second single, is more of a reflective song. "It's basically a conversation with myself reminding me of all the things I have to get rid of in order to get what I want in life," Mya has said, of this song.
If Mya drops this song as a second single, she might as well give up on promoting this album. In today's era of increasingly low sales, labels aren't known for pushing albums if two singles tank. And this song would definitely tank! Rotem, who also produced "All In The Name of Love" (a decent album track) for this album, produced one of Rihanna's top-10 hits "SOS" but clearly didn't step up to the plate when it came time to give Mya great material. There are some interesting vocal effects at the end of the song but it's an album track, not single material.
Other tracks include the midtempo "Life's Too Short," produced by hitmaker Bryan-Michael Cox, and the Kwame-spinned "I Am" (this track features a cameo by Charli Baltimore. The version that leaked to the net featured a rap by Penelope Jones).
"Life's Too Short" which got a good response from the crowd at the listening session, would be prime to be considered as a radio single, but in reality, Cox recycled the beat from another hit of his, Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You." It's time for Bryan to elevate his production skills because his songs are starting to sound the same. Mya deserves better than this!
On the Tricky Stewart-produced "Riding," a vengeful Mya hops in her car and drives around looking for her cheating boyfriend. She drives past his 'mama's house, boy's house and his bitch's house.' This one is definitely a chick record. Think Monica's "So Gone."
The Carvin & Ivan-produced "Lights Go Off" (one of the more interesting songs on the album) brings to mind the work they did on Faith Evans' last album "The First Lady." It sorta reminds me of Faith's "Catching Feelings" but doesn't feel like a blatant knock-off like the Cox-produced track. Carvin & Ivan also produced "Switch It Up" on this project and the song is pretty much album filler (and not good filler, at that).
"Give A Chick A Hand" is Mya's letter to the 'chick who took her man.' It has a Timbaland-ish vibe to it and brings to mind Monica's recent single 'Sideline Ho.' The song isn't as catchy as Monica's though.
The seductive "No Touching" & "Nothing At All" round out the album and are cuts that sound like vintage Mya.
All in all, I wasn't very impressed with this effort from Mya. As the industry continues it's downward spiral with sales, very few artists get a chance to regroup. Mya should delay this project a little while longer and go back to basics.

New Liberation Review!!!!!!! Review From Young Black And Fabulous YBF REVIEW- Because YBF has eyes and ears everywhere...Jennifer (the new YBF New York Correspondent) hit up Mya's exclusive listening session on her first assignment. Check out her review for YBF: The listening session lended itself to a friendly debate on whether Mya’s vibe was closer to Beyonce’s, Ciara’s or Alicia’s. Huh? In my opinion, Mya occupies a category all her own. Some of the attending press also questioned her manufactured-style, claiming the label hasn’t fully developed her as an artist. But there’s proof that decent singing + great dancing = a good performer who can sell albums. Janet’s been doing it for years! Now onto the review… Liberation is supposed to be Mya’s most personal album to date, since she didn’t feel the public really knew her. Mya always felt compelled to put out music that matched her looks. But what is music from a long-haired beauty with a fabulous version of a dancer's body supposed to sound like? If that were the case, everyone from Beyonce to Amel Larieux would sound like Apollonia. Nonetheless, her album was filled with aggressive beats, served up by big-name producers like Scott Storch, Bryan-Michael Cox, and J.R. Rotem (responsible for K-Fed’s “America’s Most Hated” – no comment), just to name a few. The album kicks off with the progressive, bass-laced track “I Am”, which features Charli Baltimore, who appeared out of think air - but she brought it. Mya declares “she’ll have you feeling like you just got high,” which is bold and a little dirty, just like that KING interview (ya’ll know the one)! “Walka Not a Talka”, a contender for the second single, was one of my faves. You could really hear Mya’s voice soar as she called herself a “b*tch that got a plan”. This could easily be a summer anthem with heavy beats and Moroccan pipes. I can just see Mya dancing around in a harem on Access Granted. By now you’ve already heard her current Scott Storch track, “Lock U Down,” which is the perfect sing-along-song that you can shake that money maker to. They were smart to add Lil’ Wayne, because he basically heats up any song. If Mya’s the Collabo Queen, he’s definitely the king. The deeply personal, slightly-stalkerish “Ridin’” is about a real-life situation your girl experienced when her man cheated, and she was ridin’ around at 3AM looking for his tired ass. Mya takes you on a ride from her man’s ex’s house, to his boy’s house, and his momma’s house – oh yes she did! Just when I thought Mya was about to throw some ‘bows, standout track ”Give a Chick a Hand” is unexpected as she congratulates the hoochie who just took her man. Although I was hoping she was gonna give this chick a backhand, I was really feeling this track. The last standout, “Life is Too Short” talks about some true ish. The lesson: don’t let your pride keep you from the one you love. We’ve all been there. This sweet, yet mature tune is the most reminiscent of her old stuff and would also make a great second single. The only obvious downfall on Mya’s playlist is the “woe is me” song “All in the Name of Love”. I’m sorry, but I’m just not buying the youleftmeafter13yearswith4kids song. Not believable. If you’re already a Mya fan like I am, you’ll definitely be pleased with the project. If you still need convincing, you might want to wait for the radio-edits. Liberation is set to drop in time on June 26th, but it’s been pushed back more times than Sha-ne-ne’s cuticles. Nevertheless, the album delivered with heavily produced tracks and Mya’s unique brand of swagger. Overall, the catchy beats, clever lyrics and good girl gone grown and sexy make this an album worth copping. Jen's grade: B+ Source- ybf.blogspot.com/2007/04/ybf-review-myas-liberation.html
