Liz Phair Reclaims Her 'Independence'Susan Visakowitz, N.Y. Fifteen years after Liz Phair's classic Matador debut, "Exile in Guyville," established her as an indie rock icon, the artist says she's ready to "bring that moment back to life." In her first interview about the imminent re-release of "Guyville," due June 24 on ATO, Phair tells Billboard it "was actually ATO's idea initially, but I did realize that we'd never done the 10th anniversary edition, and it seemed like a good thing to do. I jumped on the idea." As previously reported, the new edition of "Guyville" includes four previously unreleased audio tracks and a DVD with a documentary about the album's genesis, which Phair says she was particularly excited to work on. "I wanted to ... revisit the scene that happened around 'Guyville' in 1993," she says. "It was also a good way for me to establish my independence." Phair, who started at Matador and then made three unevenly received albums for Capitol, says she decided on ATO for the re-release of "Guyville" because she "missed being on an indie. I never wanted to go to a major in the first place, but Matador basically sold me to Capitol, and when they divested, I was left there. It has been a long time since I could do what I wanted ... I can honestly say, for the first time in 15 years, I feel creative." With that, Phair is in the midst of recording a new album for ATO, tentatively set for a fall release. "I have a strong vision that I can't quite articulate yet," she says of the new material, "but I'm hoping it'll be clear on the album." www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003788441-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Billboard Q&A: Liz PhairCortney Harding To say that Liz Phair's career has had its fair share of ups and downs is a grand understatement. After wowing critics and hipsters alike with her 1993 Matador debut, "Exile in Guyville," Phair released two more solid indie records before being absorbed by Capitol Records. Her 2003 self-titled major-label debut was a slick pop album that sold almost as many copies as "Guyville," but faced a critical drubbing as her old fans deserted her. After her second record for the label performed poorly, she was dropped from Capitol and found herself at loose ends. After a short hiatus, however, Phair is back with a new record deal with indie ATO, an in-progress new album and a re-release of "Guyville," set for June 24. She spoke to Billboard about what's new and exciting in her world. Why did you decide to sign with ATO for the re-release of "Guyville" and your new record?Liz Phair: I missed being on an indie. I never wanted to go to a major in the first place, but Matador basically sold me to Capitol, and when they divested, I was left there. It has been a long time since I could do what I wanted. When I was on Capitol, I tried to adapt and make the best of it, but I can honestly say, for the first time in 15 years, I feel creative. I don't have to start with a mindset that thinks about how to sell the record and works backward. Why did you decide to kick off the deal by re-releasing "Exile in Guyville" as opposed to releasing a new album? The re-release was actually ATO's idea initially, but I did realize that we'd never done the 10th anniversary edition, and it seemed like a good thing to do. I jumped on the idea because I wanted to work on the DVD and revisit the scene that happened around "Guyville" in 1993. I wanted to bring that moment back to life, and it was also a good way for me to establish my independence. I'm also excited about the way the re-release turned out. Alan Light did the liner notes, and I've been meeting with artists about the packaging for the 2.0 version. There are three bonus tracks, but there is a good minute separating them from the rest of the record. It was cool to go through my closet and find the songs -- some are from [demo] "Girly Sound" but they are very much of the "Guyville" era. Does it ever drive you nuts that even after four more records and 15 years, people keep coming back to "Guyville?"There was a period where I was frustrated, but much of that came from the fact that I was stuck in the major system and felt like my fans hated me and I was cranky. And now I'm not cranky anymore [laughs]. When I did the first pop record, I have to say it was fun for me. [Then-Capitol president] Andy Slater came in and we just decided to give it a shot. I felt like I had fun and learned a lot, although I certainly would not have made that record had I not been on a major. Who do you think will be picking up the re-release of "Exile" and the new record?I think I still have a core fan base, and there are people out there who like the sloppy Liz style. I have a feeling that my fans are older and have lives now -- they are in a different place than they were 15 years ago. What can we expect of the new record?I was recording demos all winter, after taking a few years off, which I needed. The demos were all super cheap, and my friends all lent me their time and got involved. I'm going to start recording in mid-April and hopefully bang this puppy out. I have a strong vision that I can't quite articulate yet, but I'm hoping it'll be clear on the album. "Guyville" was released at an interesting moment for women in 1993 -- Clinton had just been elected, riot grrrl was happening and gender politics were very different. If it were released today, how do you think it would do?I'm of two minds about the whole thing. Fifteen years ago, things seemed a lot more male-dominated, and now you get women busting out everywhere, so that's good. But the way they are busting out is still very much within the constraints of what men want them to do. Maybe we don't need to have as much anger as we did back then, but we still need strong women. I see all these young women on porn sites, all these sorority girls posting pictures of themselves giving blowjobs and thinking that it's empowering, and I feel like they really missed the point. www.billboard.com/bbcom/feature/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003788440

Ha, great interview. I'm excited for a new album, and I may pick up the re-issue since I don't have 'Guyville' yet anyway.

Welcome back Liz, your fans have missed ya!!
Thanks for this article, I always wondered why she went to a major, thought she had sold out, and put out polished crap for the most part. Matador done a really stupid thing by letting her go, but yet they still have Cat Powers, weird. Don't get me wrong, Cat Powers is awesome too, just don't know why Matador would sell Liz out like that. Not all of her stuff was crap, by the way,I won't get into the specifics of which albums are good/crap, you guys seem to know what is up in this thread :)!
I had the pleasure of seeing Liz back in the day here in Chicago with Material Issue at the Metro, and it was one of my treasured memories of my younger, care free days! Glad to see Liz is still in the game, and hopefully, doing it her way finally!! I WILL be buying this, FLOWER is one of the BEST songs EVER!!

I was just on Liz's website, and I noticed that some one on here mentioned something about buying other albums. You can purchase WhipSmart, Liz Phair, and WhiteChoc for just $4.99, and I placed a pretend order to see shipping, and it was only like $4, if anyone is interested here is the link. stores.awarestore.com/store2535-category1

I'm mad Liz Phair always gets backhanded love. I thought the album was brilliant and has some of her best work on it.

Liz Phair Feeling 'Natural' On New AlbumMichael D. Ayers, N.Y. Although it's still without a title or track listing, Liz Phair's new album is in its final recording stages. "This I can tell you: all my sloppiness is in there," she tells Billboard of her ATO debut, due this fall. "I fought all the way through, and I'm not letting anyone take it to a perfected style. "It's not going to be '[Exile in] Guyville' again, but I'm using all my tools," she continues. "I keep pulling it out of producers' hands, before they can do anything." Phair concedes that so far she's confident in about "half of it," but will be busy with the album all through August. The best way I can describe it is 'natural,'" she says. "It has mistakes in it. It has layered background vocals of mine that just make an overall slop, but it's perfect slop." Having split with Capitol earlier this year, Phair is finding that working with ATO is a breath of fresh air. "They literally look at me and say, 'Here's your budget, don't go over, bring us something good,'" she says. "It's a f*cking mind-bending experience after the last 14 years. Even when I was with Matador, combined with other labels, there were so many chefs in the kitchen. I'm working exactly the way I want to work." ATO recently reissued Phair's classic 1993 debut, "Exile In Guyville," which she's been performing in its entirety at a handful of recent shows. "I remember being kind of aggravated, because I was supposed to be recording my new record, and I had to go back and figure out how to play all these songs," she says of the "Guyville" shows. "It was 20 years ago when I was writing all these. And one thing I found out, which is really lucky for me, is that I've become a better guitar player now, and as bizarre as they are, they're not technically hard to play." Beyond three upcoming "Guyville" gigs next month, Phair says there aren't any plans for more, but she isn't ruling it out. She reports, "If people are into hearing it, I'd like to play it, until it becomes the 'Yeah, yeah, the old traveling 'Guyville' show." www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003832146

I didn't know she was releasing a new album this year.
I discovered her when she came out w/"Why Can't I?" and I haven't really checked out her music besides that. I did remember the Somebody's Miracle album coming out a few years ago, but I kinda just forgot about it. However, I think I'll give her new album a shot, and perhaps check out her previous albums this week.

Liz Phair Finally Releases Girlysound TapesUnfortunately, they are packaged with her new album Before releasing her landmark 1993 debut album Exile in Guyville, Liz Phair recorded three mysterious demo cassettes as Girlysound. These tapes made Phair something of an underground sensation and got her signed to Matador. A number of Girlysound tracks appeared in re-recorded and sometimes altered form on Phair's albums, but the originals have never been officially released. That's about to change. On October 19, Rocket Science Ventures will release a double CD that'll show two very, very different sides of Liz Phair. The release will pair Funstyle, the nutso self-released album where Phair raps over Bollywood samples and makes other confounding artistic decisions, with the collection Girlysound. Phair will also hit the road in October, playing Matador's 21st birthday party in Las Vegas as well as a string of West Coast dates. We've got all of them listed below. Liz Phair: 10-03 Las Vegas, NV - Matador at 21 10-05 Solana Beach, CA - Belly Up Tavern 10-08 Los Angeles, CA - El Rey Theatre 10-10 San Francisco, CA - The Independent 10-12 Seattle, WA - Crocodile Café 10-13 Portland, OR - Doug Fir Lounge 10-15 Vancouver, British Columbia - Venue pitchfork.com/news/39963-liz-phair-finally-releases-girlysound-tapes/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PitchforkLatestNews+%28Pitchfork%3A+Latest+News%29-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LMFAO.

The Girlysound disc will only feature 11 tracks. I take it Liz is asking (or urging, rather) us to compare each disc of raw, personal material. An obvious plea for a second opinion -- she's so cute.
