Pearl Jam joining U2 at Aloha StadiumFans in Hawaii are astounded by the show scheduled for Dec. 9 Yesterday's announcement of U2's new concert date of Dec. 9 came with a surprising bonus: the addition of Pearl Jam (pictured below) to the Aloha Stadium bill, setting up a rock pairing that far exceeded ticket-holders' dreams. "I'm so emotional, I've been phoning and e-mailing my friends all day," ticket-holder Monica Munro said. "This concert is a total dream come true." A further bonus: With the stadium converted into football configuration for the University of Hawaii season, reserved seats will be closer to the stage than in the previously planned baseball configuration, stadium spokesman Patrick Leonard said. "The stage's location will remain in the north side of the field," he said, "and (that) should bring both sideline seats closer." U2's April 8 Aloha Stadium date was put off because of the sudden illness in the family of a band member. That postponement is looking like a blessing in disguise. Rumors had been circulating among Hawaii fans that the veteran Seattle band Pearl Jam would play the islands after its Australia tour, but no one anticipated a pairing with U2. Honolulu residents who held onto their tickets are now doubly excited. "I knew that U2 wasn't going to let us down," Munro said. "They take care of their fans. Pearl Jam is also loyal to their fans." All previously postponed Australia dates for U2's "Vertigo '06" tour are also being honored, and three Tokyo dates have been added. The last Japan date is Dec. 4, five days before the tour closes in Honolulu. "I'm glad I didn't sell my tickets," Tamara Kong said. "My husband wasn't originally going to go with me, but he changed his mind once he found out Pearl Jam is coming." Earl Crawford said he and his wife had been considering returning their tickets for a refund. "We spent 300 bucks on two tickets like everyone else," he said. "When my wife and I first heard about the rescheduling of the concert, we were totally stoked. ... I guess my first reaction was, 'I wonder how much I could get for these tickets on eBay,'" he joked. Rocco and the Devils, led by U2's longtime stage manager, Rocco Reedy, will open the concert as originally planned in April. Reedy said he remembers Pearl Jam last opening for U2 in 1992 in Italy. Interviewed by phone from Illinois, where he is touring with Def Leppard and Journey, Reedy also said the Aloha Stadium appearance will maintain the same "Vertigo" staging, as individual video and sound setups will be gathered from vendors around the mainland for reassembly. "It was just a case of cutting up the pie and getting it back together," he said. Those with tickets for the original April 8 show who are unable to make the Dec. 9 date have until Thursday to return their tickets to the point of purchase. (For tickets purchased online or by phone through Ticketmaster, call 877-750-4400.) Leonard said those tickets -- he will not know the number until next week -- will be sold to the public beginning Aug. 5. Leonard also said the stadium staff would meet today about the addition of Pearl Jam to the bill. "I would assume that we'll have to start a little earlier than the originally scheduled time.

billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003530183January 10, 2007, 12:00 PM ET Jonathan Cohen, N.Y. Pearl Jam Goes Covers Crazy For Holiday Single Pearl Jam's annual holiday single for members of its Ten Club fan organization will feature a pair of classic rock covers: the Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" and Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World," the latter recorded live at the Make Poverty History benefit in Melbourne in November with U2's Bono and the Edge guesting. As first reported here, the Who cover will appear in the upcoming Adam Sandler/Don Cheadle film "Reign Over Me," which opens March 9 in U.S. theaters. It was produced by Brendan O'Brien, his first work with the group since he remixed three songs from the "Ten" album for the 2004 compilation "Rearviewmirror." Billboard.com understands there will not be a commercially released soundtrack from the film. However, "Love Reign O'er Me," which is marked by a long piano intro and ferocious screaming from frontman Eddie Vedder, has already begun garnering airplay on rock stations such as KISW-Seattle and WMMR-Philadelphia, prompting speculation it may be made available for sale as a digital download at some point in the future. According to a post on Pearl Jam's Web site, the fan club single will hit mailboxes "sometime in February." Meanwhile, Pearl Jam is rumored to returning to the road this summer, but no details have yet been announced.

from Billboard:
Pearl Jam Picks Europe Over Bonnaroo January 26, 2007, 10:15 AM ET Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Pearl Jam will play 13 shows in Europe in June and will not, as has been claimed, appear at this summer's Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tenn. The band will play six headlining shows and appear at seven festivals, beginning June 8 in Lisbon. The trek runs through June 29 at Belgium's Werchter Festival.
According to a spokesperson, the band, which toured extensively in 2006 in support of their self-titled debut for J Records, has no other shows scheduled for 2007. "Historically, there have been five years or so between our visits to Europe, so it's a treat to go back again so soon," says band manager Kelly Curtis.
There is, however, new Pearl Jam music at radio, in the form of a cover of the Who's "Love Reign O'er Me." As previously reported, the song will appear in the upcoming Adam Sandler film "Reign Over Me" and will also serve as the A-side of the holiday single sent to members of Pearl Jam's Ten Club fan organization.
Ten Club members will get first crack at tickets via a pre-sale, via which some shows begin going on sale today (Jan. 26). General public onsales and opening acts have yet to be announced. According to the band's Web site, the entire floor area for a June 18 gig at London's Wembley Arena will be reserved for fan club members.
Here are Pearl Jam's European tour dates:
June 8: Lisbon (Passeio Maritimo Alges) June 9: Madrid (Festimad) June 12: Munich (Olympichalle) June 13: Katowice, Poland (Chorzow Stadion Slaski) June 15: Italy (city/venue TBA) June 16: Vienna (Nova Rock Festival) June 18: London (Wembley Arena) June 21: Dusseldorf, Germany (LTU Arena) June 23: Tuttlingen Germany (Southside Festival) June 24: Scheebel, Germany (Hurricane Festival) June 26: Copenhagen (Forum) June 28: Nijmegen, Holland (Goeffert Park) June 29: Werchter, Belgium (Werchter Festival)

Whoops, didn't see this a month ago, but I'm glad you bumped it up again. I actually like the cover, but I like most of what Pearl Jam's done over the years, so I'm probably biased.

With No Album On Horizon, Pearl Jam Touring For FunPearl Jam has "no set date" for returning to the studio to follow-up last year's self-titled album for J, but the group couldn't pass up a series of "pretty cool offers" on the live front this summer, guitarist Mike McCready tells Billboard.com. Pearl Jam will hit the road in Europe for three weeks beginning June 8 in Lisbon, and will also headline the final day of Lollapalooza in Chicago on Aug. 5. "People still want to see us and we're having fun doing it," McCready says. "The last year-and-a-half run was a long one for us. We're all getting a little bit older and having families. But these seemed like good opportunities, so we're going to take them." With a laugh he adds, "That being said, we're probably not going to go out for another year-and-a-half tour for the rest of our lives." Since wrapping that extensive outing in December, band members have been demoing material on their own while staying in occasional contact via email. McCready says he has tested out some ideas with guitarist Stone Gossard and drummer Matt Cameron in separate sessions as well. "When we get it all together, we'll decide to do a record," McCready says. "That may be a year from now or half-a-year from now." Pearl Jam did hit the studio at the tail end of 2006 to record a cover of the Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" for the new Adam Sandler film "Reign Over Me." Sandler approached Vedder to cover the tune at a Los Angeles show last year, but the frontman, an admitted Who fanatic, was a bit nervous about going through with it. "Eddie asked Stone and I what the guitar players thought, and I told him, 'I know you can nail this,'" McCready says. "I've heard him messing around in the studio, singing Who songs by himself in the vocal room in-between takes, and he's nailing it there. I knew he'd put everything into it, because he'd know Pete Townshend might someday listen to it." On the Brendan O'Brien-produced final version, which was released as the A-side of the band's annual holiday single for its fan club, Vedder unleashes blood-curdling screams the likes of which have rarely been heard from him on record. "It's funny -- Stone says he has this natural fuzz box on his voice and he's definitely using it here," McCready says. As reported yesterday (April 4), McCready and his U.F.O. tribute band Flight To Mars will anchor the fifth CCFA benefit on Saturday in Seattle. Vedder and Pearl Jam keyboardist Boom Gaspar will also be on stage April 21-22 in Honolulu for Jack Johnson's Kokua benefit, and Vedder has also signed on for an acoustic set at the Hullabaloo benefit for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music on May 5 at Los Angeles' Henry Fonda Theatre. www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003567818

It'd be cool to see this hit the Top 40, but I don't think the song has the legs to make it.

Pearl Jam Boxes Up Gorge Shows For June ReleaseMay 02, 2007, 3:25 PM ET Jonathan Cohen, N.Y. BillboardPearl Jam has boxed up three complete concerts held at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Wash., over the past two years for the aptly named release "Live at the Gorge 05/06." The seven-disc collection will arrive June 26 via the band's own Monkeywrench label. "Live at the Gorge" rounds up shows from Sept. 1, 2005, and July 22-23, 2006, and features 76 different songs. Fans can pre-order a limited edition of the box starting today (May 2) via the band's Web site. The Sept. 1, 2005, show is the most popular in the history of the group's live downloads initiative, according to Tim Bierman, who manages Pearl Jam's Ten Club fan organization. The group opened its first Gorge performance in 12 years with a nine-song acoustic set, before launching into a 27-song electric show. The following July, Pearl Jam wrapped a North American tour in support of its self-titled J debut with a two-night stint the Gorge. Among the rarities unearthed was "Dirty Frank," which had not been played live in 12 years, as well as "Rats" and "Satan's Bed," which had long been absent from the live repertoire prior to the tour. "Pearl Jam" reinvigorated the veteran Seattle group at retail and radio, spawning the No. 1 Modern Rock hit "World Wide Suicide." "We've never spent that much time on a record ever; doing demos, redoing songs, tracking them, re-tracking," guitarist Mike McCready tells Billboard.com. "We'd never really done that before. Generally we just go in and record and have it done. This time, it was more scientifically soulful. We were very focused on making the best songs we could make, and there happened to be great energy happening during those sessions." As previously reported, the group will begin a European tour June 8 in Lisbon and will also play Lollapalooza in Chicago on Aug. 5.
