As widely rumoured for the past few months, Rogers has flipped or moved formats on 3 of it's 4 Ottawa and valley FM frequencies. The move took place around noon-time today (January 9th.)
Casualties: 101.1 X-fm (Alternative Ottawa) Country 92 (92.3 Country in Smiths Falls)
Y105 (105.3 Country Ottawa) moved to 101.1 vacated by X-fm
New Stations: 92.3 Jack-FM (Classic Hits in Smiths Falls) and the big news:
105.3 KISS FM (HotAC Ottawa)
*Smiths Falls is located 1 hour SSE of Ottawa.

Rogers giving the KISS name to a Hot AC rather than a CHR/Pop.
Interesting...

Yep - no more CHR for Rogers. This is their second HotAC with the KISS name, the other being in Vernon BC.
Now that X-fm Ottawa is gone, Rogers is completely out of the youth radio business.

THIS JUST IN:
HOT 89.9 Ottawa (CHR/Rhythmic) MD and evening announcer Scott Boogie has left the station. He was the driving force behind the station's format and instrumental in bringing the hip hop sound to Ottawa airwaves. I don't find it a coincidence that Scott's leaving comes shortly after the station added No Doubt's new single to it's playlist and AT40 to it's Saturday lineup.

Does this mean 89.9 will flip from CHR/Rhythmic to CHR/Pop?

That's the million dollar question. Originally HOT was supposed to be a Dance station, and it wound up being CHuRban once it launched back in February. I think after the fall book however, HOT decided it needed more of a broad appeal format like CHR because the ad revenue just isn't coming in. Up until today though, most people in the biz thought 105.3 would become a Smooth Jazz/AC hybrid and not a HotAC. If a move to CHR was in HOT's future game plan, KISS 105.3 might be making them think twice. Really it shouldn't. HOT could use this to it's advantage by relaunching as a CHR and declaring war on KISS. Promoting a station that played all the hottest hits with a visible assault on KISS for what it doesn't play would probably work. In the only two major Canadian cities* where there is a current aggressive battle between a CHR and a HotAC, CHR has been proving the victor.
*HOT 103 over Q94 in Winnipeg. *HOT 103 over B107.3 in Victoria.

Wow, alternative stations don't really do that well in Canada. Look at x-fm in Vancouver, dead.

Doh!
I forgot about Edmonton in the HotAC and CHR battle. So far, Power 92.5 (HotAC) is beating 96X (CHR) by a thin margin (7.8 and 6.9). 96X didn't flip formats to a CHR until late in the Fall ratings period though.

And to make matters worse, their longtime rival 99.3 The Fox switched back from Alternative to Active Rock.
102.1 The Edge Toronto, freq 107 Winnipeg and 89X Windsor are the only Alternative stations I can think of left in Canada. Of those, only The Edge is successful ratings wise. 89X has been losing a longtime battle against Detroit Active Rocker WRIF for a while now.

Probably just a matter of time before 96X takes over Power 92 with 92 slipping and 96X gaining in the ratings. I still don't get the change for Power 92, I mean there is no urban to compete with like here in Calgary. Obviously the people of Edmonton still want their hip-hop and R&B. I've listened to 96X every once in awhile and they do seem to have quite a balanced playlist where alot of CHR's here had a tendency to lean a bit Hot ACish. Also about the alternative stations, didn't Victoria just recently lose one as well?

Extreme 107.3 (Alternative) became B107.3 (HotAC) around a year ago. Good point though. I forgot about the other Alternative station in Victoria (The Zone). That brings the total to 4.

It was only a matter of time that a guy named classic hits format came to Edmonton. Look at the success of Jack in Vancouver and Calgary, Bob in Winnipeg...
Didn't think Corus would do it with Power92 though. Their HotAC experiment lasted less than 9 months. Oh well. 92.5 will now become the most listened to frequency in Edmonton again.

Hopefully this fad will pass within a year or so. I mean how many times can you hear the same 80's (mostly) tunes over and over again?

Now there's Joe FM? I still can't get over the success of Jack FM in Vancouver... it has powerhoused its way to the top in such a short time. The whole "We play what we want" / "We play anything" slogan bugs me because their playlists definitely aren't as innovative or as varied as they make themselves out to be. The only new songs they add are tired played-out songs like "The Game of Love". Meanwhile, former alternative station 104.5 has become Clear FM, a strange mix of AC, Hot AC, and Smooth Jazz. I wonder how it will do.

Well, assuming they have a nice playlist and don't just play the big obvious hits, I think a station dedicated to a certain decade (or a general classic rock station) should have a ton of choices with playlists. I'm still anxiously awaiting the creation of an all-90s station. A station that doesn't just play the big obvious hits of the 90s but even some lesser knowns by people that only had that one lesser-degree hit.
