Al Green Reveals Details of ?uestlove-Co-Produced LPIn the world of soul singers with froggy tenors, stylish outfits, and killer falsettos, Cee-Lo Green has reigned supreme since at least the summer of 2006, when "Crazy" was inescapable. No disrespect to Cee-Lo, but the original Green machine, i.e. Reverend Al, has returned with a new album to dispatch with all this Gnarls Barkley malarkey. Aptly titled Lay It Down, the record comes out May 27 via Blue Note. In an inspired move, Green collaborated with the Roots' Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson and Roots/Lauryn Hill/Common collaborator James Poyser to produce the album. ?uestlove plays drums on Lay It Down, and the record's other musical contributors include Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, and Corinne Bailey Rae, as well as horn group the Dap-Kings. Green will lay it down on the road in support of the record with several North American shows scattered all the way through September. Lay It Down: 01 Lay It Down [ft. Anthony Hamilton] 02 Just for Me 03 You've Got the Love I Need [ft. Anthony Hamilton] 04 No One Like You 05 What More Do You Want From Me 06 Take Your Time [ft. Corinne Bailey Rae] 07 Too Much 08 Stay With Me (By the Sea) [ft. John Legend] 09 All I Need 10 I'm Wild About You 11 Standing in the Rain Al Green: 04-03 Philadelphia, MS - Silver Star Casino & Resort Convention Center 04-05 Tampa, FL - Ford Amphitheatre 04-27 New Orleans, LA - New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 05-23 Sonoma, CA - Field of Dreams Park 05-24 Reno, NV - Silver Legacy Hotel & Casino/Expo Pavilion 05-25 Aptos, CA - Aptos Village Park 06-19 Toronto, Ontario - Sony Centre 06-27 New York, NY - Carnegie Hall 06-28 Montreal, Quebec - Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier/Place des Arts 06-29 Ledyard, CT - Foxwoods Casino/MGM Grand * 07-04 Bossier City, LA - Horseshoe Casino Riverdome * 07-05 Tunica, MS - Grand Casino & Hotel 07-12 Chicago, IL - Charter One Pavilion 07-15 Vienna, VA - The Filene Center at Wolf Trap 09-13 Primm, NV - Star of the Desert Arena 09-17 Fresno, CA - Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino 09-20 Los Angeles, CA - The Greek Theatre * with Gladys Knight

The track with Corinne is oozing with jazzy soul, just the way I like it. I hope I can get the album soon.

Billboard Review:
At this point, if you're Al Green, messing around with your formula isn't so much unlikely as it is pure madness; it'd be like AC/DC deciding to add bassoons. Even the highly touted input of the Roots' ?uestlove (producing with James Poyser, both in place of Green's longtime go-to Willie Mitchell) results more in decoration than innovation. It's not the new-blood-fueled revelation some might have hoped for, but who cares. Green's voice remains lithe magic, and he's brought in such contemporary all-stars as Anthony Hamilton (on the album's two best tracks, "You've Got the Love I Need" and the slinky title song), John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae for help. ?uestlove's drums get a little boost in the mix, and Poyser's B3 lightly brushes each song's cheeks. But when it comes to Green, what more needs to be said? The reverend preaches on. —Jeff Vrabel

I know he did not say that on the BET Awards. That is embarrassing.

His CD sales are holding up surprisingly well. He's already on track to sell more than he did with his last 2 CDs.

It feels like there's a lot more hype behind this than his last two, so I'm not surprised. It probably has to do with the ?uestlove production, and the Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, and Corinne Bailey Rae features.

His label should really promote some singles to Urban AC and maybe even fund a video.

Billboard:
• The June 27 "BET Awards" help out Al Green, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award during the show, as his two albums on the Billboard 200 make gains. His latest, "Lay It Down," rises from No. 69 to No. 57 (10,000) with a 7% gain. Green's hits set "The Definitive Collection" re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 162 with 4,000 (up 62%). On the "BET Awards," Green took the stage and sang two songs after a trio of tribute performances from Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton and surprise guest Maxwell.

I'm so happy that Al Green won two Grammys. I love that song, "You've Got the Love I Need." Al has one more category to go and that's the (Best R&B Album) which will be featured on the telecast.

It's rumored that Al Green and Justin Timberlake will be doing a duet of "Let's Stay Together" to replace the Rihanna and Chris Brown performance at the Grammys.

It's a shame that something bad had to happen for Al Green to get a performance slot at the Grammys. He should have had a slot in the first place.
