Roger Friedman of Fox News, who many feel is a mouthpiece for Clive Davis, brought up Clive in his column today. What a shock, he is defending Clive and putting down Barry Weiss. Clive Will Survive Will BMG?I notice there is no mention of Kelly....I wonder if she is still on the outs with Clive. Good thing there was a shake-up at BMG....it can only be positive news for Kelly.

I notice there is no mention of Kelly....I wonder if she is still on the outs with Clive. Good thing there was a shake-up at BMG....it can only be positive news for Kelly[. I noticed that too. I had a feeling Clive still had a vendetta against Kelly when he made that speech recently about "professional songwriters" and then when asked about Kelly he said that Kelly wasn't signed as a singer/songwriter. It gave me an uncomfortable feeling when I read that. Thank God he's gone.

Roger Friedman. He's Clives boy. I'm certainly not going to put much stock in his assessment.

^^ Love dat signature ! :) Thanks! ![:d](http://images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif) Ooh I love the sound of something sweet and fun! I want to see more of that, after the rather sad and deep My December. A really sweet, and I think needed change, as Kelly has such a bubbly and fun personality, and fun songs give a chance to show that off! I'm really excited for a new sound too! Though I hope there is "Sober" somewhere in it! :)

Still, when you stack J/Arista Records against Zomba/Jive, the results are very 2008. The former has consisted of Alicia Keys, Santana, Gavin DeGraw, Leona Lewis, Rod Stewart, Dido, Sarah McLachlan, etc. all real musicians, no artifice. Even the "American Idol" winners Fantasia, Carrie Underwood can actually sing. Zomba/Jive is a triumph of style over substance: Britney, Justin, *NSYNC, whats left of the Backstreet Boys, dancer Chris Brown and a potpourri of indistinguishable hip-hoppers. LOL he's really using artists who really haven't been a factor in music for years...Gavin DeGraw? what was his ONE hit? Leona Lewis sold 200K Cds her first week, even with the benefit of a huge media blitz including Oprah. When was the last hit by Rod Stewart or Sarah, Dido? GMAB! Justin Timberlake had one of the biggest selling album last year, Chris Brown is a huge star who happens to be quite talented, britney, while plaqued with scandals, has still made at least 2 top 20 hits off her last album and it's managed to go platinum too. Roger is a moron and he proves it more with every article he writes. I do find it intersting that he didn't mention Kelly in his "at least the winners can sing" schtick. No offense to Fantasia but the girl isn't exactly raking in the CDs sales...her songs get plenty of play and she's very successful but she's not a sales monster... Clive basically took an artist who generated over 100 million in sales for them and threw her in the trash.... I know music4aw dismissed Clive's treatment of Kelly has been a blip on the radar but I suspect it might've played a bigger role than some might think.... Labels are dying...they NEED artists with core fanbases and whose fans still buy albums... Kelly clearly has that fanbase otherwise she wouldn't have sold 1.4 million albums world wide with almost no promotion and in the wake of a negative media scandal. Clive in recent weeks has also proven that he wasn't prepared to let sleeping dogs lie.... perhaps, and yes it's a kelly-centric vision, someone took notice and realized that Clive has squandered the talent of several artists lately....Fantasia, Bo Bice, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Kat McPhee, and Taylor Hicks.... he took what was a golden opportunity to foster these artists and basically treated them like crap.... of those listed above only two are still signed to a label...after have an audience of 30 million people.... what a waste...

I don't know- if Kelly and Clive had made another "Breakaway" together, I would be happy and grateful for it. Truthfully, I don't know if this is a plus or minus yet- we'll have to see how the new album comes off. The new person might be worse and you know the saying- you don't miss it until it's gone.

From many internet websites' speculation only, it seems that the combination of his age and his behaviour (from the Kelly-dissing to the eggs-in-one-basket Leona promotion to the recent articles dissing his own artists and dissing AI contestants by stating they should be treated differently than "regular" artists) led to the label's intolerance of Clive. If the comments about Rolf Schmidt-Holz (CEO of Sony BMG who allegedly pulled Clive off the stage during the pre-'My December' Kelly diss) are indeed true, the company MUST have been pissed with Clive given that this information was released to the public. Any corporation wants a profit without a doubt; however to utilize any business practices that negatively promotes it's product, regardless of Clive's or any executive's opinion of the record, would seem to be a wholly counter-productive business practice. Considering all of the negative pre-release press that started the whole debacle, I would surmise that 1.6+ million in sales of 'My December'( SILENCE- I had to correct your figure based on IFPI 2007 data ( www.ifpi.org/content/library/top-50-albums-2007.pdf) for a record that could have sold at least several million more just by riding on the coattails of 'Breakaway' and proper radio and television promotion may have been one of the impetuses that led to Clive's demotion. If so, I am a firm believer that karma NEVER forgets... ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0270.gif)

While it is true that Weiss may end up being more rigid with his artists, several of the articles I have read about him in the past 24 hours suggest the opposite. Regardless of how rigid he is or isn't, I do not think he would openly "make fun" of his own product/artist in the forum that Clive did. That alone is a upgrade for KC and other RCA artists... ETA: What a great start to a brand new album thread !!!!

Maybe. It's true he did diss it and give it bad publicity but he still let her put it out. Some people might be surprised to know some label heads won't do that at all. George Harrison submitted an album in the 70's and the label rejected it and refused to put it out. He had to do another, and he was George Harrison, for goodness sake, one of the Beatles and who had had one of the biggest hits ever only a few years earlier with his solo album "All Things Must Pass." This didn't just happen to Kelly, several have experienced it, and unlike her, didn't get to release it at all.

Could someone in Sony-Bertlesmann (to whom Davis reported) have thought Davis didn't manage the talent appropriately? Sure. All I'm saying is that news reports from authoritiative media sources (i.e., not blogs), indicate costs and product/service diversification are the reason. The more detailed New York Times article on this story makes it very clear that the Sony BMG move is related to a common corporate desire to cut costs, combined with a desire to diversify their products/services. I'm getting ready to post the Times article in a moment. It also indicates that the new CEO is known for being involved in the creative decisions of his artists. So only time will tell how this is going to work out for all of BMG's artists, not just Kelly.

All -- here's a more detailed article from The New York Times via Yahoo Business News:biz.yahoo.com/nytimes/080418/1194766419398.html?.v=15NYTimes.com via Yahoo Business News Longtime Executive Steps Aside at Sony BMG Friday April 18, 9:38 pm ET By JEFF LEEDS and ROBERT LEVINE In a shake-up that reflects the new realities of the music business, the renowned hitmaker Clive Davis is making way for a younger executive known for having an ear toward the pop charts but also an eye on controlling costs. [SNIP] Barry Weiss, the chief of the company’s Zomba Label Group, will become chairman and chief executive of the BMG Label Group, overseeing RCA and Zomba, and an array of artists like Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, OutKast and Kelly Clarkson. The announcement surprised many in the music industry, as Mr. Davis, who has survived several executive suite setbacks only to rise again in a career that spans five decades, seemed to be playing a hot hand. This week’s No. 1 album is the debut from Leona Lewis, the latest in a long string of divas that Mr. Davis, 76, has signed and shaped. The latest album from Ms. Keys, who Mr. Davis mentors, has sold 3.4 million copies since its release last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and his division operated at a profit. But the pop hits that Mr. Davis is known for delivering typically require the kind of expensive videos and marketing campaigns that labels are reluctant to finance at a time when music sales have been sliding. Sony BMG’s decision to promote Mr. Weiss underscores the idea that hits alone cannot save the industry. Mr. Weiss, 49, who also personally oversees many of his artists’ creative decisions, has enjoyed his share of chart success with acts like Chris Brown and T-Pain. But he also has a reputation for tightly managing expenses, and being savvier about the digital revolution. T-Pain’s hits, for example, have had considerable success as ring tones, the kind of high-margin, low-glamour products that are becoming more important to labels’ bottom lines.Besides a generational change, the reorganization signals yet another management shift at Sony BMG, a joint venture of Sony and Bertelsmann that has suffered several bouts of management discord since its founding in 2004. [SNIP] Although Mr. Davis’s employment contract was not up until next year, this will give the company a succession plan.“The business is under tremendous pressure, and it’s very tough to maintain profits as they were in preceding years,” said Danny Goldberg, a former record company president who now runs the management firm Gold Village Entertainment. “So it’s clarifying that they would turn to Barry Weiss, who is on the one hand responsible for signing talent and on the other hand has shown a discipline about cost-cutting.” Mr. Weiss will now have to apply his touch across a far larger organization. “The goal is to maintain separate label identities, but maybe we can bring some of our business-minded, entrepreneurial approach to the other side,” Mr. Weiss said, referring to Mr. Davis’s RCA division, “and maybe there are some lessons from their side that I can bring to our side.”

On Saturday, Benedict will play host to more than 25,000 young people at a youth rally just north of Manhattan at St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, N.Y. Kelly Clarkson has been enlisted to warm up the crowd with a rendition of "Ave Maria"--perhaps a sign that Benedict may need a little help in energizing a crowd of kids. "Honestly, I think a lot of people are more excited to see Kelly Clarkson," admits 16 year-old Stephanie LaGumina, who will attend the rally along with 100 of her female classmates from The Ursuline School in New Rochelle, N.Y. In a group interview with four of them earlier this week, they spoke of a strong desire for Benedict to speak directly to young people but also a deep disconnect that many in their generation feel with the church, particularly with this pope. www.newsweek.com/id/132752Musicians play "Papalpalooza" for BenedictFri Apr 18, 2008 6:11pm EDT By Deborah Evans Price NASHVILLE (Billboard) - In a convergence of religious experience and rock festival, some of the top acts in Christian music will perform at a youth rally on Saturday as part of Pope Benedict XVI's U.S. visit. Third Day, Matt Maher, Salvador and tobyMac are scheduled to perform in Yonkers, N.Y., at St. Joseph Seminary. Inaugural "American Idol" champion Kelly Clarkson was also slated. "St. Joseph is a beautiful, historic seminary campus -- one of the most important seminaries in the country," says event producer Chris Wangro, president of New York-based Zaragunda. "We've been building here for over a week. It's a giant setup -- it's a reconfigured stage once used for the Rolling Stones. The site is about 50 acres, and we've covered every inch of it with production needs. We're calling it 'Papalpalooza.' " Wangro says "miles and miles" of temporary fencing have been put up. "We've put in an entire food operation. We have over 600 people working," he says. "We expect 25,000-30,000 people to be coming. We've set up temporary chapel tents. We've set up confessional areas, emergency medical and the whole nine yards. It's a real festival. That's what makes this different from the other papal events." Wangro was previously director of special events for the city of New York and handled events for its parks department. "When Pope John Paul came into New York City in 1995, the folks from the archdiocese brought me in to run operations for the Central Park mass," he says. "And now with Pope Benedict coming, they asked me to produce this portion of the pope's visit in Yonkers." According to Wangro, the New York Archdiocese is paying the production costs -- which he declines to specify -- and all acts are performing gratis. "Not only are people volunteering (to perform), people are paying their own expenses to come to town," Wangro says. "It is the pope, after all." Obviously the pope is the primary draw, but the artists also are happy to be performing at an event that targets youth. "It's an opportunity for the country to see there is a young Catholic Church and they are passionate about what they believe," says Maher, who is Catholic. "It's a chance for them to look around and say, 'I'm not alone in my convictions. I'm not alone in my beliefs.'" "We have everything from great children's choirs and dance troupes to some of the greatest acts in Christian rock," Wangro says. "It's all about the spirit of the day that can be shared whether you're a kid in a garage band or a Grammy-winning artist like Third Day. We are bringing together a wide spectrum of people united by their faith." Maher has prior experience with papal events, having performed during the pope's 1999 visit to St. Louis. Maher also works regularly with two national Catholic ministries: Life Teen, a worldwide Catholic youth ministry, and Louisiana-based Adore Ministries. He is scheduled to perform at World Youth Day in July in Sydney, and says the St. Joseph event has special meaning for him. "There are people coming from different denominational backgrounds," says Maher, whose Essential Records label debut, "Empty & Beautiful," came out earlier this month. "To me it affirms the work the pope is trying to do for the gospel around the world." Reuters/Hollywood Reporter www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSN1829552720080418?sp=true

Call it Kelly Clarkson's revenge. This week, the corpse of Clive Davis was replaced as chariman and chief executive officer of BMG. Clive was demoted to the position of Chief Creative Officer, also known as Worthless Token Position Where Clive Can't Do Much. Does this mean we won't have to see him doing the corpse shuffle on the Idol finales anymore? Can we stop looking at his rotting flesh in HD? Well, we hope to look half as good as old Clivey when we're 150 too. www.votefortheworst.com/20080418/clive_davis_kicked_out_again

Well I loved My December but I would like Kelly to return to a sound that has My December's rawness and Breakaway's commercial appeal. I wanna see Kelly get huge again. I am kind of worried, lol. I will have to wait to hear her new stuff before I judge though!

News from the old world: record stores, wannabes, and Clive DavisPosted by Matt Rosoff Post a comment Three items from the old world of music today--you know, that world where people bought music on physical discs and then went out to see the acts perform that music live. Daddy, what's a record store? (Credit: Record Store Day) Record Store Day. That's tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 19. Your day to celebrate the old way of buying music, where you got into your car and drove to a local store and talked to the clerk and sifted through the racks and maybe experienced the delight of finding an old CD you'd forgotten about, heavily discounted or expensive and rare. Or maybe you heard a great tune spinning in the background and bought it, like I did with The Monochrome Set's Strange Boutique and PiL's Second Edition and Wilco's amazing live CD (their best album, in my opinion), Kicking Television. Anyway, a lot of stores are having special events--for example, Seattle institution Silver Platters, which started selling CDs (and Laserdiscs!) back in the early 80s when vinyl was still the norm, is having live music all day long. So if you love music, throw your local record store a bone and buy a disc or two. Rock star wannabes. Like AC/DC said, it's a long way to the top. Most of us start in small clubs, playing with multiple acts on the same bill. (Most of us never progress any further.) As with any potentially complicated social interaction, there's a code of etiquette that goes along with such gigs. Leaving early is frowned upon. (Everybody has to work early in the morning.) Loading your stuff out during another band's set is rude. Whining to change the set order because you have to work early in the morning is very rude. (Dude, seriously, everybody has to work early in the morning.) But one of the worst offenses is unjustified rock star pretension. Last night, I filled in on bass for a band I used to be in. We were on the bill with the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, who apparently were kind of something in jazz circles a few years back. I was the first from my band to arrive. Immediately--no "hi," no "how ya doin?"--their manager told me that they didn't like the set times, wanted everybody to share gear ("backline") to save time, and were moving everything back an hour and shortening our set so they could play for two hours. This was their gig. They had invited us months ago. They were charging $12 a head and had sold quite a few tickets ahead of time. So we had several options at that point--capitulate gladly, leave without playing, confront them and begin negotiations, or be passive-aggressive and do what we were going to do anyway. We chose to negotiate some points--our guitarist plays through an unusual amp (a 1965 Fender Super Reverb, and not a reissue) and couldn't switch, and our drummer likes his snare drum's sound. As far as set time, we wanted to be good rock citizens, so we pared it back. That wasn't enough. 20 minutes in, the soundguy told us we were down to our last song. Halfway through that song, their "manager" freaked out and asked the soundguy to make sure it was really our last song. OK, point taken. Hustle off the stage, children, the big boys are coming. At which point, the amazing Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey did...nothing. They sat. They went out back to do what hippie jam bands do before shows. They sat some more. People got restless and left. The rest of us waited through 45 minutes of dead air punctuated by a Fixx CD. In other words, they weren't particularly anxious to play. They just wanted to make sure that nobody else got a full set, as that might have diminished their imaginary rock star status. They finally played at their originally scheduled time, dressed in black robes in front of a projection screen showing travel movies. They weren't bad. The crowd was moderately into it. (A friend: "If they're such hot jazz stars, what are they doing here?") But they didn't bring in enough people make their guarantee. And made some enemies in the process. I can't imagine the club will have them back--the poor sound guy had to deal with all their demands, as well as the grumbles from the supporting acts, and if they didn't sell enough tickets or drinks...well, it's a long way to the top. Clive Davis. Here's what I think I know about this record industry legend, based on stories I've read over the last few years. He signed Janis Joplin in the 60s. Helped revolutionize the business by focusing on disposable stars who he could make or break. Made tons of money. Oversaw Carlos Santana's comeback by hooking the guitarist up with a bunch of guest stars for the twenty-million-selling album Supernatural. Made more money. Got in a fight with American Idolstar Kelly Clarkson, who wanted to write more of her own material, and tried to ruin her career. Held some sort of party before the Grammies. Got fired.
Yes, apparently Sony BMG has sent him packing with a version of the music-mogul home game. Bob Lefsetz was so inspired by the news that he wrote a multipart blog entry with numbered headings, like an old Yes song. Most of the rest of the world simply doesn't care. Look, I could tell you every detail about the life and art of Neil Young or Dick Dale or John Lydon. But Clive Davis? Outside the industry, record industry execs aren't particularly loved or hated or feared or admired--they're just in the way. Maybe the CEOs responsible for these folks' salaries are finally remembering that it's about the music.www.cnet.com/8301-13526_1-9922909-27.html

^^ I have to say that I was a bit naive in that I did not realize that it was more widely accepted that Clive indeed "tried to ruin her (Kelly's) career" as that author wrote.

Yeah neally, I heard that a lot. The word was that he was out to ruin her. But she survived. ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0270.gif)

She sure did- girl's got some balls.. On a papal note, courtesy of maria4hitz from KCE (as translated from a Argentinian website): "And, the winner of the popular tv show American Idol, will sing for the Pope at the Saint Joseph Seminary in New York. Kelly Clarkson will sing some religious songs, including an Ave Maria, but not rock songs. Benedict XVI doesn't like rock music at all. He considers rock (literal translation, i have no idea how to say this, this probably makes no sense haha) "an anti-religious vehicle",like he said in a 1986 speech." (then they a talk little bit more about what he thinks of rock music, and he really deoesn't like it, if this is true of course). " www.eldiariodeparana.com.ar/textocomp.asp?id=143079
