See the update below. Unlike XM, Sirius does the flashback countdowns for their 80's and 90's channels in-house. Big 80's has The Big 40 Countdown with Nina Blackwood, and The Pulse has the Pulse Music Monitor with Karen Carson, which actually plays the top 15 from a year in the 90's in conjunction with the station's current top 15. What I want to know is: where do they get the data for these charts? I'm guessing the Big 40 uses the Hot 100, since their #1's usually seem to match the Hot 100's. I know the Pulse's countdown doesn't since for last week's episode (1997), "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy should have been #1 according to Billboard, but was only #8 on the countdown. And the #15 song was "The End Is the Beginning Is the End" by Smashing Pumpkins, which never came close to the Hot 100. I suppose they might be using Hot 100 Airplay, so they don't neglect those songs that didn't have CD singles. But I would think if they did use those charts, they'd be obligated by Billboard to credit where they got them each week, which they don't. So if anyone can shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it.

I dont think anyone has difinitively stated for certain........but the popular opinion is that they are using "CashBox" for their 'retro' countdowns. Not Billboard.

Well, whaddya know? It looks like they do use Cashbox for their retro countdowns. Cashbox has full archives for all their top 100 charts; this week's episode was from 1982, and it matches up perfectly with the July 24, 1982 edition of Cashbox. Well, almost. It looks like Sirius is guilty of doing some replacement. This week's #32 should have been "Your Imagination" by Hall and Oates, but instead, they played "Heat of the Moment" by Asia, which fell off from #38 to #46. And it seems like this happens once or twice a week. From the 1986 episode a couple weeks ago, they replaced "Mountains" by Prince at #19 with "I Wanna Be a Cowboy" by Boys Don't Cry. (I think another song got swapped out earlier on, but I don't remember.) And last week, "One for the Mockingbird" by Cutting Crew got replaced by Living In a Box's self-titled song. I wonder if it's because they don't have the rights to play those songs, or they can't find them, or what. Not that I really care that much, but it's just curious. Though, I'd rather they'd just bump each song up a spot and insert the "trespassers," for want of a better term, at the bottom of the countdown, but it's not like anyone's really gonna notice the difference. The 90's countdown appears to sync up as well. Of course, since Cashbox went under in 1996, it still leaves open what they use for '97, '98, and '99. And seeing some of the songs at #16-40 really makes me wish they'd get on with it and make that one a full fledged top 40 show.

Have to say, playing "In Your Eyes" instead of "Press" is a real bum substitution. Don't get me wrong, I think Peter Gabriel is awesome, but that particular song I could hear several times a week on terrestrial radio if I so desire; good luck finding anywhere that still plays "Press."

And a weird note about this week's 1986 episode: For some reason, they decided to play a Spanish version of "Yankee Rose". And since it was brought up in the Rick Dees thread, yes, Nina pronounced "Double" correctly.

"Make Believe" by Toto at #20 and "Voyeur" by Kim Carnes at #27 were skipped. Rather than being substituted, it appears everything from Cocker & Warnes up was moved up accordingly. Before that, five songs were skipped and the first three that don't have asterisks were moved up. Also, Nina Blackwood noted that "Jack and Diane" was John (Cougar) Mellencamp's first #1. While that's technically true, she may want to look at the transcript of the last 1982 episode when "Hurts So Good" was Cougar's first #1. 10/1/1994 15 Aaliyah - Back and Forth 14 Coolio - Fantasic Voyage 13 Changing Faces - Stroke You Up 12 Janet Jackson - Anytime Anyplace 11 Amy Grant - Lucky One 10 Ace of Base - Don't Turn Around 09 Crystal Waters - 100% Pure Love 08 Elton John - Can You Feel the Love Tonight 07 Collective Soul - Shine 06 Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey - Endless Love 05 John Mellencamp with Me'shell Ndege'ocello - Wild Night 04 Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories - Stay (I Missed You) 03 Babyface - When Can I See You 02 Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do 01 Boyz II Men - I'll Make Love to You Did you know that, in 1994, Tiger Woods won his first Masters at age 18? Karen Carson did; too bad Tiger probably doesn't, since he didn't.

For once, the 80s replacements were actually upgrades (in my opinion, of course).

For once, the 80s replacements were actually upgrades (in my opinion, of course). Well, as it seems to always be the case, I've never heard the songs that got skipped, so I'll take your word for it. I just wish I actually got to hear the episode this week. Anytime I miss "Running Up That Hill" sucks, as far as I'm concerned. Besides, in my opinion, 1985 > any other 80's year, musically.

Well, with the XM merger having finally taken effect, I guess there's no more need for this thread, since it seems The Big 40 and the Pulse Music Monitor have been replaced by Rick Dees and AT40 reruns. At least I finally figured out where Sirius got their post-1996 countdowns, and I can't believe it didn't strike me earlier: it's the ARC Weekly Top 40.

SXM is no longer airing American Top 40 reruns on 80s on 8 (though they do continue on 70s on 7, for now), evidently letting whatever contract they had to air it lapse in what I assume in a cost cutting move. While I'm disappointed about this, since I really enjoyed hearing classic Casey Kasem, to fill its shoes, they decided to bring back the Big 40 Countdown -- with some changes. All the VJs host the show, rather than only Nina Blackwood (Martha Quinn only appears in her usual hourly trivia question, though), and they appear to be using Billboard once again, rather than Cashbox. They still switch out songs that either are too obscure or they don't have, but hopefully this won't be as frequent as it was during the first run. Now I just hope they find a countdown for 90s on 9 soon. In the meantime, I'll continue posting the countdowns just as I did last year.
This week they did 1987.
10/10/1987 -- 40 Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is a Place on Earth -- 39 Loverboy - Notorious 25 38 Huey Lewis & the News - Doing It All for My Baby 31 37 Debbie Gibson - Only in My Dreams -- 36 The Other Ones - Holiday -- 35 Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes - (I've Had) the Time of My Life 38 34 Cutting Crew - I've Been in Love Before -- 33 Richard Marx - Should've Known Better* 27 32 Alexander O'Neal - Fake 22 31 Dan Hill and Vonda Shepard - Can't We Try 40 30 Bruce Springsteen - Brilliant Disguise 34 29 Mr. Mister - Something Real (Inside Me/Inside You) 36 28 Kenny G - Don't Make Me Wait for Love 17 27 Grateful Dead - Touch of Grey 18 26 The Fat Boys and the Beach Boys - Wipe Out 20 25 Los Lobos - La Bamba 35 24 U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name 12 23 Michael Jackson - I Just Can't Stop Loving You 29 22 REO Speedwagon - In My Dreams 30 21 Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin 08 20 ABC - When Smokey Sings 23 19 The Cars - You Are the Girl 26 18 Swing Out Sister - Breakout 24 17 Billy Idol - Mony Mony 19 16 Fleetwood Mac - Little Lies 21 15 Tiffany - I Think We're Alone Now 10 14 Smokey Robinson - One Heartbeat 13 13 Natalie Cole - Jump Start 15 12 Expose - Let Me Be the One 14 11 Madonna - Causing a Commotion 11 10 Levert - Casanova 09 09 John Cougar Mellencamp - Paper in Fire 16 08 Michael Jackson - Bad 07 07 Heart - Who Will You Run To 01 06 Whitney Houston - Didn't We Almost Have It All 06 05 Prince and Sheena Easton - U Got the Look 04 04 Bananarama - I Heard a Rumour 05 03 Europe - Carrie 03 02 Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam - Lost in Emotion 02 01 Whitesnake - Here I Go Again

I'm glad the show is back!!! Listened this weekend and it appeared that they were using the CASHBOX Chart this week for October 19, 1985.. They only made 2 substitutions: That awful Hall & Oates "The Way you Do the Things You Do" was replaced by Simple Minds "Alive & Kicking" and Kate Bush's "Running up that Hill" replaced The Power Station's song that was #36..

Guess they're re-airing some old shows, then, 'cause that's the same thing they did last year, according to the 20 October post in this thread.

At the End Nina said they were going to count down 1980 Next Week.. Looks like they did that one last year as well..
Seems old shows with "New Voice tracks" perhaps?

Yeah, very odd that they would replay the same countdown from last year, and doing it next week as well, it seems. It appears last week's 1987 show was also done a couple years ago. I guess it was a good thing they replayed it since I missed it last year. Unfortunately, I did not miss the 1980 show, and so I don't look to hearing those (mostly) crappy songs.

This week it was indeed 1980. However, they used Billboard rather than repeating last year's Cashbox show.

This week it was 1989. I guess they're trying to pick up where they left off last year, but would it kill them to mix it up a little? (Next week will be 1983, like last year. I'll hazard a prediction that the week after that will be 1981.) If they just waited a couple weeks, we could've gotten great songs like "Rhythm Nation," "Another Day in Paradise" and "Pump Up the Jam" instead of mostly the same songs from last year.
11/4/1989 -- 40 Eurythmics - Don't Ask Me Why 33 39 Living Colour - Glamour Boys* -- 38 Cher - Just Like Jesse James** -- 37 Don Henley - The Last Worthless Evening*** 23 36 Madonna - Cherish 27 35 Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time 26 34 Warrant - Heaven -- 33 Taylor Dayne - With Every Beat of My Heart 18 32 The Rolling Stones - Mixed Emotions 39 31 Bon Jovi - Living in Sin 21 30 Milli Vanilli - Girl I'm Gonna Miss You 36 29 Belinda Carlisle - Leave a Light On 34 28 2 Live Crew - Me So Horny 31 27 Kevin Paige - Don't Shut Me Out 35 26 Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville - Don't Know Much 32 25 Kix - Don't Close Your Eyes 29 24 Gloria Estefan - Get on Your Feet 12 23 Expose - When I Looked at Him 11 22 The Cure - Lovesong 28 21 Billy Joel - We Didn't Start the Fire 25 20 Soul II Soul - Back to Life 07 19 Babyface - It's No Crime 19 18 Poco - Call It Love 24 17 Alice Cooper - Poison 22 16 Richard Marx - Angelia 17 15 Tina Turner - The Best 13 14 Elton John - Healing Hands 14 13 New Kids on the Block - Didn't I (Blow Your Mind) 20 12 Milli Vanilli - Blame It on the Rain 08 11 Young MC - Bust a Move 15 10 The B-52's - Love Shack 16 09 Paula Abdul - The Way That You Love Me 06 08 Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood 10 07 Bobby Brown - Rock Witcha 05 06 Aerosmith - Love in an Elevator 09 05 Bad English - When I See You Smile 02 04 Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love 01 03 Janet Jackson - Miss You Much 04 02 New Kids on the Block - Cover Girl 03 01 Roxette - Listen to Your Heart

I do hope they restart the 90's version (but not if it's only 15 songs).
