So evidently Pop2K does this for 2000-09 countdowns now as well. Haven't heard one yet but sounds interesting.

So evidently Pop2K does this for 2000-09 countdowns now as well. Haven't heard one yet but sounds interesting. Aww, I can't get that channel on my Sirius radio; I remember it was available for like 5 minutes a few years ago, before it went online only. It's two hours, so I'm guessing it's a top 25 or top 30. So that just leaves 90s on 9 without a countdown, ever since they jettisoned Rick Dees reruns two years ago. I can't imagine why they never replaced it, but maybe if this 2000s one catches on, they'll come up with a 90s show soon.

This week, in lieu of the Big 40, 80s on 8 aired a special celebrating the 30th anniversary of MTV by playing the first songs played on the channel, up thru "Cruel to Be Kind." Just FYI, I've been listening to the Pop2Kountdown every week and they must not be using the Hot 100 for this chart. I haven't been keeping track of the songs, but I do remember that they had Chris Brown's Forever at #1 this week and I'm Real at #1 last week.

I haven't been keeping track of the songs, but I do remember that they had Chris Brown's Forever at #1 this week and I'm Real at #1 last week. Hmm, well, I think they're using the Hot 100, but they must be removing certain songs and shaping the chart as they please. I did notice that certain "groupings" of songs were consistent with Billboard, but with some songs simply omitted; I thought maybe they weren't being tracked on the Sirius website. I guess that's alright with country and hip-hop songs that weren't big pop hits, as well as high download songs that shot to the top with little to no airplay behind it. Though why they'd omit "Fallin'" and "Disturbia," which were huge songs during the decade, is a mystery. I guess until I can actually listen to the show in full, I won't try reporting the chart each week. If someone else wants to post the chart each week, they're more than welcome. Any idea what year this week's show is gonna be? Don't know for sure, but I'd guess it'll be 1983 or 1987. Perhaps the latter, so they don't wind up playing three consecutive years.

After a glance at the Hot 100 charts from 9/6 and 9/13/03, I tend to agree with friday that they must be shaping the chart as they please (a wretched thing to do).
For one, "Into You" by Fabolous feat. Tamia was #5 on the Hot 100 both weeks, yet it's nowhere to be found here. For two, "Harder to Breathe" is #30 here, yet it was #62 on the 9/6 Hot 100. For three, they played the DJ Sammy cover of "The Boys of Summer", rather than the one by The Ataris?
Seeing "Get Busy" and "When I'm Gone" listed made me wonder if maybe they were using the Top 40 Mainstream chart instead...but both songs were at the edge of the Top 40 on the Hot 100 on 9/6, so it doesn't seem likely that they'd be just short of the Top 20 on the Mainstream chart that same week.

Yes, they definitely played the DJ Sammy version of Boys of Summer, which I also thought was super weird.

^ Yep, they used the 9/6/03 Hot 100, but it seems they just pick and choose which songs to play. It's really quite stupid, since there are plenty of pop chart sources they could use where that wouldn't be necessary (the ARC top 40, for one). Also, not only did they play the wrong version of "Boys of Summer," but they played "Addicted" by Saving Abel, rather than the song of the same name by Simple Plan, which, of course, was the one on the charts that week.
The Big 40 featured 1987 this week.

^ That's an episode I would've really liked listening to. But every week I look at this countdown, I get more puzzled by what they're doing. They managed to play the wrong Destiny's Child song at #3 (should've been Jumpin' Jumpin') and inexplicably substituted "So Fresh So Clean" in place "Come on Over Baby" by Christina Aguilera at #9? And, much as I love "Everything You Want," if they were really dead set on playing only one Vertical Horizon song, why couldn't it have been "You're a God," which was #37 on that week's Hot 100, and much, much fresher by this point in the year than EYW. Seriously, this looks like amateur hour compared to the Big 40 countdown. Speaking of which...
This week they did 1988.
9/24/1988 33 40 REO Speedwagon - Here with Me -- 39 Giant Steps - Another Lover 31 38 Breathe - Hands to Heaven 30 37 Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - 1-2-3 25 36 Steve Winwood - Roll with It 19 35 Chicago - I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love 40 34 Whitney Houston - One Moment in Time -- 33 Kylie Minogue - The Loco-Motion 15 32 Elton John - I Don't Wanna Go on with You Like That 34 31 Brenda K. Starr - What You See Is What You Get 17 30 Michael Jackson - Another Part of Me 37 29 The Escape Club - Wild, Wild West 36 28 Bobby Brown - Don't Be Cruel 32 27 INXS - Never Tear Us Apart 35 26 Erasure - Chains of Love 26 25 Rod Stewart - Forever Young 24 24 Debbie Gibson - Staying Together 29 23 Steve Winwood - Don't You Know What the Night Can Do 27 22 Glenn Frey - True Love 22 21 DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince - A Nightmare on My Street 28 20 Phil Collins - A Groovy Kind of Love 16 19 Tracy Chapman - Fast Car 03 18 George Michael - Monkey 08 17 Van Halen - When It's Love 20 16 Poison - Fallen Angel 23 15 Information Society - What on Your Mind (Pure Energy) 18 14 New Kids on the Block - Please Don't Go Girl 14 13 Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - I Hate Myself for Loving You 12 12 Rick Astley - It Would Take a Strong, Strong Man 21 11 UB40 - Red Red Wine 13 10 Cheap Trick - Don't Be Cruel 09 09 Kenny Loggins - Nobody's Fool 11 08 Peter Cetera - One Good Woman 04 07 Huey Lewis & the News - Perfect World 10 06 Def Leppard - Love Bites 05 05 New Edition - If It Isn't Love 06 04 Taylor Dayne - I'll Always Love You 07 03 Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy 02 02 Robert Palmer - Simply Irresistible 01 01 Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child of Mine

It was a great countdown. This period of 2000 was a great one for pop music. But, I'm as puzzled as you are. I knew Come on Over was supposed to be on this countdown and I was completely baffled when it never appeared. As for Independent Women being substituted, I can tell you this - at that point in the countdown a listener called in to give her favorite memory from the year 2000 and it was about the movie Charlie's Angels.

Seriously, this looks like amateur hour compared to the Big 40 countdown. Speaking of which... This week they did 1988. Though the Big 40 is still vulnerable to factual errors as well as some technical gaffes. Nina referred to UB40 as "pretty much a one hit wonder" regarding "Red Red Wine". Um, "Can't Help Falling In Love", anyone? Or is it countdown policy to pretend that music ended in 1989?

But I would say the technical gaffes don't happen often enough to really be a bother. And since they stopped substituting obscure songs with more well-known ones *knock on wood*, there's at least more fidelity to their charts than Pop2K has. That probably doesn't mean much outside this board, but I just think relatively speaking, 80s on 8 has the more interesting countdown at the moment.
