This week they did 1983. This is actually the same chart they featured this weekend last year. It's also the first time I can remember them going more than three months in a calendar year between featuring one year (the last 1983 show was on June 25). Kinda makes you wonder why they didn't just wait another week or two for this year, if they couldn't feature it sooner.
10/8/1983 29 40 Juice Newton - Tell Her No -- 39 Stacy Lattisaw - Miracles 39 38 Rod Stewart - What Am I Gonna Do (I'm So In Love With You) -- 37 Bryan Adams - This Time -- 36 Men At Work - Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive 32 35 Elton John - Kiss the Bride 37 34 The Kinks - Don't Forget to Dance 34 33 Madness - It Must Be Love 36 32 Stevie Nicks - If Anyone Falls 35 31 The Moody Blues - Sitting at the Wheel 40 30 David Bowie - Modern Love 20 29 Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya 23 28 Rick Springfield - Human Touch 30 27 Robert Plant - Big Log 31 26 The Motels - Suddenly Last Summer 19 25 Michael Jackson - Human Nature 14 24 Asia - Don't Cry 27 23 Prince - Delirious 18 22 Donna Summer - She Works Hard for the Money 25 21 Sheena Easton - Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair) 22 20 Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack - Tonight I Celebrate My Love 24 19 Talking Heads - Burning Down the House 16 18 Shalamar - Dead Giveaway 28 17 Lionel Richie - All Night Long (All Night) 10 16 Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) 21 15 The Fixx - One Thing Leads to Another 17 14 Laura Branigan - How Am I Supposed to Live Without You 06 13 The Police - Every Breath You Take 13 12 Naked Eyes - Promises Promises 15 11 Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton - Islands in the Stream 11 10 Frank Stallone - Far from Over 08 09 Michael Sembello - Maniac 12 08 Spandau Ballet - True 09 07 The Police - King of Pain 04 06 Taco - Puttin' on the Ritz 07 05 Air Supply - Making Love Out of Nothing at All 05 04 The Stray Cats - (She's) Sexy and 17 03 03 Billy Joel - Tell Her About It 01 02 Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance 02 01 Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart

This week it was 1989. I'm sure it's tough to find decent copies of some of the more obscure tracks that are played here. Still, the quality on "Sunshine" sounded almost like someone found the video on Youtube and held a microphone to the computer while it played.

^Thanks. Honestly, I just copied and pasted last year's post, so I didn't think to look that one up.
This week they did 1982. This is one of the rare times where you'll see a song played on consecutive weeks.

^ This surprises me. I would've thought they'd have done 11/21 since that's much closer to the date.
On the other hand, since that's what AT40 did, it means that between the two, both Tommy James remakes were on top this weekend...

Yeah, there's definitely some questionable entries on the list. "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" certainly isn't a favorite of mine, but it doesn't immediately jump to my mind when determining a list like this. Nor do songs like "Take It Easy," "18 and Life," or "Holiday Road," for that matter. It seems like there was some ambiguity as to what "turkey" meant here, whether it was novelty records or guilty pleasures or some combination of both.
To me, it's more telling when you consider some of the songs that were not included. I mean, how does "Pop Goes the World" make the list, but "The Safety Dance," by far a more well-known song and more qualified for this list, miss the cut?

What year is this weekend's show? Don't know; there was no mention of it at the end of either last week's or the week before's shows. The rotation would suggest that either 1980 or 1988 is due, however.

A pretty big screwup on the Sunday night broadcast saw the host segments for #12 and #10 playing simultaneously, which ultimately wound up skipping over #12 and #11.
I could be wrong, but I think "Master Blaster" is the lowest-peaking Hot 100 song that hit #1 on Cashbox during the 80's; it hit #5 on Billboard, but interrupted a 5-week non-consecutive run for "Lady" at the top.

It actually shares that honor with, of all songs, "Elvira"! "Elvira" was their #1 song on 8/1/81. They only spent one week on top though compared to Stevie's two. How about that high debut for "The Tide is High", though? Is that the highest Top 40 debut during the decade on the Cash Box chart (other than maybe "We Are the World")?

I was wondering if that 8/1/81 chart would be featured this summer in honor of MTV's 30th annivesary, but now I'm glad they didn't. Hopefully, they'll avoid it next year, though. As for "The Tide Is High," that's the highest debut I can recall since I started keeping track of these shows. "We Are the World" debuted straight onto the top 100 at #14 on March 23, 1985, which was the highest top 100 debut during the decade. If there were any other top 20 debuts during the decade, they must've worked their way up the chart like Blondie did. An interesting footnote about that 1985 chart: the week before saw three songs debut straight into the top 40; "Some Like It Hot" by The Power Station at #38, "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" by Hall & Oates at #35, and "That Was Yesterday" by Foreigner at #23. On the corresponding Hot 100, those songs debuted at #57, #55, and #47, respectively.

There were screw ups the entire weekend concerning songs 12 thru 10.
Friday nights show skipped them entirely.
Not sure about Saturday morning, but some skip must have happened. I thought I tuned in at about when #13 should have been playing, but they were in the middle of #10.
On Sunday morning, during the fade out of "Love On The Rocks" (#12), Mark Goodman came on and was talking as if "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" had just played and then on to #10 - without ever hearing Pat Benatar.

I could be wrong, but I think "Master Blaster" is the lowest-peaking Hot 100 song that hit #1 on Cashbox during the 80's; it hit #5 on Billboard, but interrupted a 5-week non-consecutive run for "Lady" at the top. That's one of the most glaring differences between sales and airplay I know of. While topping the Cashbox chart which seems based on sales with some radio airplay points factored in, "Master Blaster" never made the airplay-based Radio & Records survey (then a top 30) at all. I don't know why; not only were the song and its parent album ("Hotter than July") big sellers, but Stevie was of course an established superstar and the song's reggae sound wasn't that exotic or uncommercial for 1980.

This week it was 1987.
12/12/1987 -- 40 New Order - True Faith 33 39 Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin -- 38 Laura Branigan - Power of Love 20 37 Bruce Springsteen - Brilliant Disguise -- 36 Tiffany - Could've Been -- 35 Eric Carmen - Hungry Eyes 38 34 Icehouse - Crazy 40 33 Expose - Seasons Change 32 32 Stevie Wonder - Skeletons 37 31 Prince - I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man 31 30 Def Leppard - Animal 18 29 Swing Out Sister - Breakout 28 28 Poison - I Won't Forget You 30 27 Heart - There's the Girl 13 26 Cutting Crew - I've Been in Love Before 08 25 Billy Idol - Mony Mony (Live) 29 24 The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter 24 23 Michael Bolton - That's What Love Is All About 23 22 John Cougar Mellencamp - Cherry Bomb 21 21 The Jets - I Do You 26 20 Elton John - Candle in the Wind 25 19 INXS - Need You Tonight 27 18 Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel 17 17 Squeeze - Hourglass 19 16 Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady) 22 15 Taylor Dayne - Tell It to My Heart 05 14 Tiffany - I Think We're Alone Now 15 13 Steve Winwood - Valerie 14 12 Pretty Poison - Catch Me (I'm Falling) 16 11 George Harrison - Got My Mind Set on You 11 10 R.E.M. - The One I Love 10 09 Jody Watley - Don't You Want Me 12 08 Whitney Houston - So Emotional 07 07 Sting - We'll Be Together 06 06 Debbie Gibson - Shake Your Love 09 05 Whitesnake - Is This Love 04 04 Richard Marx - Should've Known Better 02 03 Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes - (I've Had) The Time of My Life 01 02 Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is a Place on Earth 03 01 George Michael - Faith
This has to be quickest span between two charts from one calendar year that they've ever done, with the previous 1987 episode only four weeks earlier. (I'm not counting charts between a December-January gap.) To drive the point home, 26 songs appeared on both the 11/14 chart and this one. It really sucks, too, because I was hoping they'd squeeze in a 1989 episode this month, but now that seems all but certain not to happen, since next week they'll do 1983, and I assume the week after will be 1988 so they can avoid playing charts from 3 consecutive months.

Random observation: The past three countdowns (1980, 1985 and 1987) have each featured songs by Heart. No other year in the 1980's featured a top 40 song by them in December.

This week it was 1983. 12/17/1983 :o Now that's just plain bizarre. They basically had no excuse to not air the same date (12/24).

If this countdown looks familiar, it's because it was previously done... in 2011. They played the 1/7/89 chart on the first Friday of 2011, which was a frozen version of this chart. Thus, they've played the same chart to start 2011 and finish 2011.

Did they give an exact date during the show? I don't know if they did, but if they ever give dates on the show, they'll use that Friday the show premieres (e.g. the week of January 6, 1986) rather than the exact chart date, unless of course they coincide. Given that I suppose the January 4 date is the correct one, but as I implied, it didn't really matter one way or another this week.
