This week it was 1982. Two things jumped out at me from this chart: a) the three consecutive references to three different continents in songs 31-29 and b) the extraordinary amount of upward movement occurring on this chart, including a rare 7-1 jump.

This week they did 1988. A bit of a hiccup on Friday's broadcast as the segments with "Holding On" and Will to Power were somehow omitted, and the songs were only mentioned on the backsells that followed them. However, they rectified it on subsequent replays.

This week it was 1989. Since Cashbox customarily froze its charts for the first two weeks of the year during the 80's, this chart was actually based on the December 31, 1988 chart. I noticed none of the VJs mentioned any specific chart movements ("up 4 spots this week," "down 6 to number 18," etc.) like they normally do.
1/7/1989 40 40 Cheryl Pepsii Riley - Thanks for My Child 39 39 Tracy Chapman - Baby Can I Hold You 38 38 George Michael - Kissing a Fool 37 37 Art of Noise featuring Tom Jones - Kiss 36 36 U2 - Desire 35 35 Robert Palmer - Early in the Morning 34 34 Paula Abdul - Straight Up 33 33 Information Society - Walking Away 32 32 Bon Jovi - Bad Medicine 31 31 Samantha Fox - I Wanna Have Some Fun 30 30 Robbie Nevil - Back on Holiday 29 29 When in Rome - The Promise 28 28 Breathe - How Can I Fall 27 27 Will to Power - Baby I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley 26 26 Van Halen - Finish What Ya Started 25 25 Maxi Priest - Wild World 24 24 White Lion - When the Children Cry 23 23 Eddie Money - Walk on Water 22 22 Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - Little Liar 21 21 Tiffany - All This Time 20 20 Cheap Trick - Ghost Town 19 19 Karyn White - The Way You Love Me 18 18 Sheriff - When I'm With You 17 17 Steve Winwood - Holding On 16 16 Bon Jovi - Born to Be My Baby 15 15 Guns N' Roses - Welcome to the Jungle 14 14 Kenny G - Silhouette 13 13 Annie Lennox and Al Green - Put a Little Love in Your Heart 12 12 Boys Club - I Remember Holding You 11 11 Duran Duran - I Don't Want Your Love 10 10 The Bangles - In Your Room 09 09 Chicago - Look Away 08 08 Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal 07 07 Anita Baker - Giving You the Best That I Got 06 06 Def Leppard - Armageddon It 05 05 Taylor Dayne - Don't Rush Me 04 04 Boy Meets Girl - Waiting for a Star to Fall 03 03 Phil Collins - Two Hearts 02 02 Bobby Brown - My Prerogative 01 01 Poison - Every Rose Has Its Thorn

This week they did 1986. An editing snafu caused them to announce both #2 and #1 as "Say You, Say Me." I assume the #1 introduction came from the Christmas weekend episode when they did 1985?

This week it was 1987. For the first time that I can recall, they did not use Cashbox or Billboard for the chart. Instead they used the ARC Weekly Top 40, which previously had only been used for some of the 90's countdowns that aired on The Pulse in 2008. This is also the third consecutive year a chart from February 7, 1987 has been featured on 80's on 8 (the AT40 episode from that date was played 2 years ago); that explains why they didn't use that week's Cashbox chart, but why they simply didn't just use the January 31 chart instead is anyone's guess.
2/7/1987 16 40 The Bangles - Walk Like an Egyptian -- 39 Cameo - Candy -- 38 Stacey Q - We Connect 17 37 Kool & the Gang - Victory 40 36 Toto - Without Your Love -- 35 Janet Jackson - Let's Wait Awhile 37 34 Jeff Lorber featuring Karyn White - Facts of Love 38 32 Bruce Hornsby & the Range - Mandolin Rain 14 31 Billy Joel - This Is the Time 34 30 Corey Hart - Can't Help Falling in Love 32 29 Eddie Money - I Wanna Go Back 13 28 Janet Jackson - Control 31 27 Anita Baker - Caught Up in the Rapture 35 26 Bruce Willis - Respect Yourself 33 25 Beastie Boys - (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party) 28 24 Aretha Frankin - Jimmy Lee 27 23 Journey - I'll Be Alright Without You 11 22 Gregory Abbott - Shake You Down 29 21 Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram - Somewhere Out There 24 20 Peter Gabriel - Big Time 21 19 Chico DeBarge - Talk to Me 20 18 Luther Vandross - Stop to Love 19 17 Benjamin Orr - Stay the Night 22 16 Cinderella - Nobody's Fool 18 15 The Jets - You Got It All 23 14 Huey Lewis & the News - Jacob's Ladder 06 13 Robbie Nevil - C'est La Vie 16 12 Ready for the World - Love You Down 15 11 Lionel Richie - Ballerina Girl 05 10 Glass Tiger - Someday 12 09 Boston - We're Ready 10 08 Chicago - Will You Still Love Me? 03 07 Genesis - Land of Confusion 09 06 The Georgia Satellites - Keep Your Hands to Yourself 08 05 Samantha Fox - Touch Me (I Want Your Body) 02 04 Billy Vera & the Beaters - At This Moment 07 03 Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Prayer 04 02 Cyndi Lauper - Change of Heart 01 01 Madonna - Open Your Heart
