Despite the ratings numbers, it actually is a little broke. KIIS could have a 7.0 12+ if they wanted to... Also, their song spacing is pretty bad. It's commonplace to hear two songs by the same artist within 20 minutes of each other. This is fine if you're doing them back to back as part of a promo or something, but in any other case it's just plain bad/lazy programming by the MD/PD.
Personally, I'd love to see KIIS to be a balanced "white" CHR, just like I'd love to see Star in ATL (or Q if Jan croaks) going mainstream. But, sometimes radio people like us forget to think like their listeners. That being said, a balanced mainstream CHR in LA would probably perform better than Movin' and The Sound combined, but KIIS would still beat it IMO.
I doubt ANY station can get more than 7 share in LA or NYC... too many stations... too much fragmentation. Maybe in a markets like Atlanta and the Twin Cities where there's alot less stations, 7 and up is the norm.
In big markets with lots of competition and presets like LA, TSL is way down. The average CHR listener is always on the move, so artist sep doesn't matter as much as you want to bang the hell out of the biggest hits. Plus, with artists guesting all over other artists' records (AHEM! Akon and T-Pain, just to name two), it probably gives Selector a headache. I doubt the avg. listener really cares if they hear "Dangerous" by Kardinal Offishall f/Akon and 20 minutes later the new Akon track.
I program in a smaller market, with less competition/presets, thus more TSL. My cume's maxed out so I have artist sep rules and I bang the powers in the 75/wk range.
I look for at least 30 minutes on a primary artist on a record and at least 15 on a secondary.
Well, I think Movin' and the Sound are amongst two of the worst programmed stations in this market. Movin' can't even break a 1.0 in the ratings with their stale mix of Dees and disco, while the Sound doesn't seem to know whether it wants to be an alt rock station or a rock station... pick one or the other but don't try to be BOTH!!!
I can honestly say there probably isn't one station here in this entire market that is being programmed correctly at the moment. KOST was doing a pretty good job for several years, but they've gotten a little away from what made them successful in the first place. I mean they're still spinning that huge hit of Mariah's called "Bye Bye!"
With KIIS though, it's commonplace for 15-20 minute spacing on a primary artist though... and it happens seemingly multiple times daily... it's not uncommon to have 10 minutes on secondary - i.e. "Forever" and then 2 songs later "No Air." And again why did they play "How You Remind Me" as a recurrent/gold the entire time their All The Right Reasons album was spawning hit after hit, while not touching a single one of them??? KIIS also never played "Before He Cheats" while it was becoming a top 9 hit, yet it's mysteriously shown up the past few months there as a recurrent???!!! What gives??? Hey, let's just not look at the big callout scores until a year later. And they certainly add a very high percentage of songs by "core artists" that end up flopping... the 2nd single from the PCDs current effort being the latest example... With some better programming, there's no doubt in my mind they could have at least 10-20% better ratings.
