Also, the moment that struck me most was when they showed a close up of her face while she chanted a Buddhist chant faster and faster was empowering and haunting

These younger artists today just don’t have it like they used to. I’m not going to mention any names because their Stans will jump all over me but I highly doubt they’ll be making any documentaries in 30 years about anyone currently on the charts.

I partially agree. Many of the stars of days gone by have stories that go beyond their music and are often interwoven with the songs they do. Of artists today, I’d love to see films made about Britney and Gaga, for sure, because I think they have a lot to tell. Mariah, based on her book alone.

{I caught the documentary last night} When Ike was sitting with Tina talking to the camera about River Deep not getting played on radio like she wasn’t even beside him (or had to say mattered) pretty much showed what a douche he was in that brief glimpse.
And how sad those journalists who were so lazy at research that they continually kept bringing up Ike in interviews, even after her #1 song and 4 Grammy wins..sorry she had to deal with that.
I LOVED the part where she was telling of that voice she heard from the crowd shouting back to her, ‘Tina, finally you’re receiving’ and how that was the moment that led her to realize and reclaim her power. Show some Respect! Apparently it’s the best showing yet by a doc on HBO Max. (1.1M viewers in linear and streaming) Now let’s get her into the rock and roll hall of fame as a solo artist!

Watched the documentary last night! Tina is amazing and her story is so inspiring. Her determination is unmatched. I also realized she did like 2 or 3 consecutive tours with 200+ shows in her 50/60s. Wow!

Just watched the documentary. Loved it, especially the part detailing her comeback onwards. A lot of the stuff prior to it I had known. Loved the studio footage of her being presented with "What's Love Got To Do With It" (one of my personal favorite songs of all time); that's something I'd never seen.
I adore Tina and always will, she's my favorite of all the old-school legends. I still remember a specific period in 2013 when I got into her back catalog, started watching her performances, read and watched interviews, just read all about her career and life. I turned into a full blown stan. I will always wish I could see her live, but obviously this won't happen now.
She is just wonderful and a true heroine to so many. Her story is so inspiring, her comeback which happened at an "older" age for an artist, how she just became MASSIVE playing stadiums (!)... a black woman rock star... just incredible when you think about it! There hasn't been another since and it just doesn't get bigger than Tina.

I echo the sadness at not being able to see her live.
Also, here's a Larry King interview from the mid-90s where she says to him that she's "as big as Madonna" in Europe, which is why she lives there and that is her main focus. Speak the truth LEGEND!

I really liked the documentary and agree that it could have been longer. I would like more about the records she did after her comeback. She had several successful era/tours after Private Dancer. Also, it's about time Tina a gets the Diva rankdown that she deserves (cc: #LisaRinna )

The only word that comes to my mind when I think of Tina: resilience.
She endured so much her entire life. Deserves all of the peace and calm in the world.
Though I haven't had the honor of seeing her live, I would LOVE to watch her tours now. She really did pave the way for the superstars of today and was doing bigger numbers than most of her peers and the legends of today.

I'm just too booked to host it.

I watched the documentary as well. There wasn't really any information I didn't know already, but I grew up in a family that adores her. I barely remember a period when I wasn't aware of her, and have a very vivid memory of watching the What's Love... video when I was no more than 3 at most. Along with Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Elton John, she's one of the four artists who I've known of always.
It definitely could have been longer, but there is a benefit to keeping things streamlined and digestible as one sometimes. There hasn't really been a major notable documentary like this about her, and even better, it was done with her, which makes it as essential as it can be for someone of her stature. The movie was the closest thing, particularly stateside, but I watched it a few years ago and while it is good, it also screams 90s in the way it was made at times. This documentary on the other hand is relatively timeless. Directing this towards a more general audience rather than a more hardcore one the right move because it can be shown easily to others.
More than anything, I hope this documentary (and hopefully the RRHOF as well) serves as a boost to her legacy in the US. I've always found her status to be somewhat underrated in the US, which is rather crazy because she's such an American icon elsewhere. In Europe, this is just another cherry because her legend has been solidified there for over 30 years by now. She tells nothing but the truth when speaking of the love and adoration for her there.

OMG, it's about time! Can't wait to pick this up. I really wish she hadn't skipped Break Every Rule though, I need those "Afterglow" mixes yesterday.

Congrats Tina! It’s impressive how 3 of the 5 Emmy nominees for outstanding documentary this year are solely focused on star musicians: Tina, Britney Spears and The Bee Gees. I suspect the music doc trend will only ramp up now.

Got mine in the mail this week and I've been spinning the hell out of it. It's missing a few mixes that get on my nerves. Why give me the 12" house dub and not the actual house vocal mix? They could have easily pushed the b-sides to the main disc and added some missing mixes/edits to the second disc. But overall it's a very solid re-issue. The packaging is cute and the live material/videos are a great bonus.
I really hope they give Break Every Rule a similar treatment. The "Afterglow" mixes are some of my absolute favorite of Tina's and I would kill for them on CD. And Private Dancer deserves a stronger re-issue as well (the 30th re-issue could have definitely included more).

BMG isn’t putting a price on the deal, but has confirmed it’s the biggest single-artist rights acquisition that the Bertelsmann-owned company has made since it formed in 2008. That means the Tina Turner deal has closed for a bigger price-tag than that which saw BMG acquire Mick Fleetwood’s career-spanning recorded music income stream in January. Indeed, it seems a safe bet to MBW – considering the amount of fanfare swirling around the Tina Turner deal at BMG – that this latest acquisition is in the $50 million-and-above category. www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/bmg-buys-bundle-of-tina-turner-rights-in-musics-latest-big-money-deal/

Music aside, the right to her name, image and likeness? That is money in the BANK right there.

I mean, who knows how much longer we'll have her before she crosses over. :'(
This sounds like a great way to ensure she can continue to enjoy her retirement and have a true MUSIC firm in control of her catalog instead of some venture capital thing who wants to cash in on catalog music.
