www.radioandrecords.com/Subscribers/TodaysNews/homepage.htmWhen WABC/New York OM/PD Phil Boyce heard that morning co-host Curtis Sliwa had been invited to join a Greek Orthodox church group on a recent mission to Cuba, Boyce managed to tag along. Once there, Sliwa and Boyce — who were not registered as visiting journalists to the tightly controlled communist nation — managed to broadcast a number of live "stealth" reports back to the station on Jan. 23 and 24 via a satellite telephone Boyce had packed. "When we first tried to set up and talk to people in the square outside the hotel security police appeared almost immediately," Boyce told R&R. "They were very concerned and shut us down right away. After that we did our reports in secret from our hotel room." Asked if he was ever worried that they'd get caught, Boyce said, "I got a little concerned when during one of his reports Curtis said something about how he couldn't wait until [Cuban President] Fidel Castro was dead, but, ultimately, we managed to get in and out of the country without any major incidents. Overall it was really a fascinating experience."
