Zazie already gives me constant grief for relegating Give It Away to the bottom quarter, so feel free to attack me for my idiotic choices as well! Funny. As I was going down your list, I was going to post about your placement of Give It Away. But actually, my response was going to be what a relief. Everybody and their cousin seemed to love that song, even friends of mine who do not listen to country. I hated it. It's one of my least favorite GS songs.

I would say that there's one thing that the River-dislikers can look forward to, and that would be a sharp drop for the song on the 4/25 chart. ROL is probably headed to about 31.0 to 31.5 mill as the #1 song on the 4/18 chart.
Then (especially if George plays a new song tomorrow night), I can see radio stations dropping the song big time next week, and ROL seeing at least a 5 to 6 mill fall the following week, maybe to 25 mill. Jake, Jason, Rodney, RF, and Carrie should have no trouble being above that two weeks from now. Darius could be at 29 mill on the 4/18 chart, and might have a much softer fall, to around that 25 mill range on 4/25, and could end up slightly higher than George that week. Timmy is packing it in, and Taylor should also be beating George out of the top 10.
So I would think ROL will fall to at best #6 on the 4/25 chart, #7 if Darius goes down slower, and possibly #8 if Sugarland has a big week (might be in the high 21's this week, and would then need a 3+ mill gain the following week). Then George will be gone as of the 5/2 chart.
So hang in there, guys! You only have to put up with seeing ROL on the chart for a couple more weeks!! If I can suffer through (usually quietly) seeing the songs that I hate hang around forever, you can do it as well! Be strong!

Just curious, what're #1 and #44? The rest of the Pulse Country message board: "What, are you insane, Ten Pound??!! Don't ask Jonsolo that!! You just know he's going to take the invite as a reason to post his entire stupid freaking list!!!" Me: "Hmmm... Ten Pound probably secretly wants to know the entire list, and he's just too embarrassed to ask for it. I know. I'll go ahead and post #1 to #44, as I'm sure there's hundreds of other posters here that are just dying to know as well..." Now, I'm curious. Is Write This Down your favorite George song overall, including non-#1's? There, I've set you up to post your entire list. Let's have it!

I'd put "I Cross My Heart" near the bottom. That one never did anything for me. Some of his 1980s songs aren't all that great either, as they exemplify sterile 1980s production, as well as the sterile 1980s writing style of putting a good hook in the chorus and having verses that are nothing special ("Famous Last Words…", "What's Going On…", etc.) or just having awkward lyrics ("Let's Fall to Pieces Together").
"Yes!".

Is Write This Down your favorite George song overall, including non-#1's? There, I've set you up to post your entire list. Let's have it! The following is a list of my rankings of all 302 songs that I'm aware of that George Strait has recorded and released on albums..... Okay, I'm not THAT obsessive compulsive when it comes to George's music. I will say that WTD is at the top of that non-existent list. And Amarillo By Morning, The Cowboy Rides Away, and Blame It On Mexico would all come in before #12 Baby's Gotten Good on that first list of mine. The only other additional rankings I've done for his songs, are the thirteen songs that reached #1 on other major charts besides Billboard, and I sandwiched them in as to where they'd rank in that list of Billboard #1s. (I know, it's sacrilegious for a "Billboard-only" disciple to acknowledge the existence of other charts, but I wanted a way to give Run its proper due respect...). But we'll soon be hearing from DJs and the label, and see Aircheck ads proclaiming that River is George's 57th #1, so here's where I'd slot those other 13 songs... 1. Write This Down 2. Carrying Your Love With Me 3. Check Yes Or No 4. Blue Clear Sky 5. You Know Me Better Than That 6. Fool Hearted Memory 7. Love Without End, Amen 8. I've Come To Expect It From You 9. Run10. Ocean Front Property 11. Baby Blue 12. All My Exe's Live In Texas 13. Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye 14. Nobody In His Right Mind Would've Left Her 15. I Cross My Heart 16. Easy Come, Easy Go 17. It Ain't Cool To Be Crazy About You 18. You Look So Good In Love 19. The Chair 20. Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind 21. The Best Day 22. Carried Away 23. Living And Living Well 24. True25. She Let Herself Go 26. I Can Still Make Cheyenne27. If You Ain't Lovin' (You Ain't Livin') 28. I Saw God Today 29. I Hate Everything 30. It Just Comes Natural 31. Round About Way 32. One Night At A Time 33. Let's Fall To Pieces Together 34. She'll Leave You With A Smile 35. Give It Away 36. Wrapped37. If I Know Me 38. The Big One 39. I Just Want To Dance With You 40. River Of Love41. What's Going On In Your World 42. I Know She Still Loves Me43. Ace In The Hole 44. Chill Of An Early Fall45. Right Or Wrong 46. Heartland 47. Go On48. Today My World Slipped Away49. A Fire I Can't Put Out 50. Famous Last Word Of A Fool 51. Lead On52. Am I Blue 53. The Man In Love With You54. You Can't Make A Heart Love Somebody 55. I'd Like To Have That One Back56. So Much Like My Dad57. We Really Shouldn't Be Doing ThisThere you go, and that's as much insanity as you'll be getting from me. I will say that I don't "hate" any of those songs, even the ones at the bottom. Actually, out of those 302 Strait songs that I'm aware of (and I own each and every one of them), there's only three that I flat-out can't stand: Chill Of An Early Fall's Milk Cow Blues, his Fly Me To The Moon duet with Sinatra on the Strait Out Of The Box boxed set, and Blue Clear Sky's Need I Say More. I guess you could pencil those in at #'s 300, 301, and 302 on my full list...

Oh, and shame on you for putting "So Much Like My Dad" at #56.

My dad was an alcoholic career criminal, who fathered five children out of wedlock, before overdosing on crazy glue, so that's why I can't quite connect with that song. Okay, maybe not. I'd have to drop the rankings of Love Without End and The Best Day, if that were true...

Five most played George Strait songs of the BDS era (2-16-90/3-19-09), as listed in a very special tribute section to King George in the newest issue of R&R...
Check Yes Or No (1995) Write This Down (1999) Carrying Your Love With Me (1997) I Cross My Heart (1992) Love Without End, Amen (1990)
Top five Strait songs as determined by a random survey of PDs...
The Chair (1985) Amarillo By Morning (1983) Check Yes Or No (1995) You Look So Good In Love (1983) I Cross My Heart (1992)
Note that three of the top five Strait songs as picked by PDs came out before the BDS era began in 1990.
As R&R Country Editor RJ Curtis points out, while those three songs would certainly qualify as career-defining songs, the bulk of their spins came before the BDS system came into existence.
'River Of Love' wouldn't make my all-time top twenty-five Strait list either, but considering some of the garbage which has been polluting the format for most of this decade, it's still much better than a lot of the pop-being-peddled-as-country schlock out there.

It's always enjoyable to see your lists start flowing like wine, which by the way I assume you've been downing in prodigious quantities all day.
I've never heard George sing Fly Me To The Moon, but it doesn't seem like a song made for his style. I've heard some terrific jazz versions of it and don't need to hear his. Similarly I could point you to some brilliant takes on Milk Cow Blues, even a good one by Timmy, but the song doesn't suit George. He's had a fair career in the country genre and I have a sense that's where he belongs. But in any case my opinions about what is and isn't a good song, let alone a good song for George, are way off the norm for this board and I wouldn't have it any other way.
And Give It Away is my favorite Strait song by a small margin over Carrying Your Love With Me and I Just Want To Dance With You.

IAnd Give It Away is my favorite Strait song by a small margin over Carrying Your Love With Me and I Just Want To Dance With You. I'd put "Carrying" and "Dance" much further down, but I agree with "Give It Away" being one of his best. At least your favorites are all #1's. My favorite of his is "You'll Be There", which didn't even come close on any chart, and had to fall all the way to the mid 20s before its 20 weeks were up. After that would probably be, in no particular order: "Baby's Gotten Good at Goodbye", "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" and, oh, about 30 or 40 other songs.

Please add me to the list of "River Of Love" dislikers. I think it's one of his worst songs in QUITE some time. But with the quality of #1's this year, it fits in REAL well.
I mean, I'm glad he's hit the top spot, yet again, and I hope he continues his amazing success til the day he retires in a few decades (wishful thinking, I know). But this is NOT the song I'd ever want him to take to the top.

Hey, it puts money in the pocket of the highly underrated Shawn Camp. And I bet Paul Franklin is happy about that big long steel solo he gets; certainly more attention than Shane Minor calling out "C'mon, Paul" before the steel solo in "Slave to the Habit". I mean, I'm glad he's hit the top spot, yet again, and I hope he continues his amazing success til the day he retires in a few decades (wishful thinking, I know). But this is NOT the song I'd ever want him to take to the top. I have a feeling that George Strait is going to be the Bob Barker of country music, still active and insanely popular even into his 80s.

Though this song is nothing special, I'll admit it's one of the handful of songs I have on repeat right now- it's catchy and I like the production.

Tony Brown never overproduces a George Strait song, yet he tends to overproduce just about everyone else's albums.

Wow, I happen to love Milk Cow Blues. At one time George was considering putting out an album of nothing but swing songs. I don't know if that will ever come to fruition, as it might be considered too outside the box. I agree with the sentiments on River of Love making it to #1. But, as Jonsolo mentioned, this one can make up for the classics that fell short. In fact, Amarillo By Morning, The Fireman, and The Cowboy Rides Away have been fan favorites for years and mainstays in his live shows, even though none made the top 3 on the charts, muchless #1. 5 of my favorite George Strait hits are (in no particular order): 1. Drinking Champagne 2. What's Going On In Your World 3. Carrying Your Love With Me 4. So Much Like My Dad 5. Ocean Front Property Please add me to the list of "River Of Love" dislikers. I think it's one of his worst songs in QUITE some time. But with the quality of #1's this year, it fits in REAL well. Hey, it puts money in the pocket of the highly underrated Shawn Camp. I remember Shawn Camp, but I had completely forgotten about Shane Minor.

Since everyone is posting their favorite George songs...
1a. As Far As It Goes (can't believe the folks at MCA missed this sure-fire #1) 1b. I Can Still Make Cheyenne 2. Desperately 3. Check Yes Or No 4. Adalida 5. Ocean Front Property
The Big One, True, Amarillo By Morning, Run, Lovebug, You Know Me Better Than That, and Go On all just miss out. As far as his worsts go, I don't own that many of his albums, so I don't know all the album cuts, but The Fireman is by far my least favorite of his singles. She'll Leave You With a Smile is towards the very bottom of my list as well. ROL may not be one of George's better #1 songs, but it's not horrible by today's standards, just by the lofty ones that George has set.
And thanks for your lists Jonsolo, definitely a worthwhile read.

Once or twice a generation we have one who is granted a very long life on radio -- it's not typical in most genres of popular music but in country, it does happen. And once or twice a generation we have one who thoroughly dominates the charts. But for one artist to fit into both categories -- that's truly rare. So thanks for stopping by to pay tribute. We appreciate that, even our board ruffian above. (We don't let him out much, but sometimes he gets loose.)

Talk about immediate redemption; 'House Of Cash' would be perfect.
I don't hear nearly enough Patty Loveless on the radio to begin with.
Her 1996 masterpiece 'The Trouble With The Truth' is one of the very best CDs I've purchased since I've been on this board thanks to the unanimous raves from folks on this board who identified her for me as the singer of the exhilirating 'She Drew A Broken Heart'; Blair Garner & Whitney Allen both play it on their shows from time to time.

I don't love House Of Cash, but to hear Patty on the radio again would more than worth it (Patty is far and away my favorite female artist of all time). House With No Doors would make a good choice as well though. And I know I'm not lucky enough for them to release Make Her Fall In Love With Me Song. That is one of the most infectious tunes I've heard in quite some time, but I'd doubt it would fare that well on today's country radio.
