The 2nd single from "The Boy Is Mine", which hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
I played this to death back in 1998/99. The video version was slightly different than the album one. I remember MuchMusic playing this a lot as well and it also hit #1 on their chart! (LOL).
Your thoughts?

This was the bomb when it was out. I love the "Love Hangover" sample, Jermaine put his foot into that beat.

Yup, this was a huge hit and it still holds up well. It's true, JD made one of the hottest beats ever here and picked up a great sample. Monica couldn't be beat around this time. I don't remember the video version being different than the album, but the video was hot, it's really memorable. The scene filmed on a camcorder is awesome.

The bridge part was not sung; instead, it was instrumental.

I like it. It's honestly probably in the lower half of my favorite Monica singles but I do like this song especially the bridge.

The song was just OK in my book. Nothing horrible but nothing fantastic either.

The bridge (or middle 8, if you're European) is amazing. Possibly one of the best ever. Love it! JAM!

Lol @ "Old Monica!"
I liked this song. Good message. I remember humming it while playing Marvel Vs. Capcom at a liquor store with some friends I haven't seen for awhile.

I remember humming it while playing Marvel Vs. Capcom at a liquor store with some friends I haven't seen for awhile. Hehe... surprised you could think of any song, what with the inane Marvel vs. Capcom theme music blaring (I hate that game).

We were humming along to "The First Night" because I told my friends Morrigan doesn't get down on the first night. That's why I remember it.

I liked this song.
A friend of mine edited this song and changed the words to "I wanna get down, but on the first night". It was sooo funny. The rest of the lyrics were left the same.

"I should make a move but I won't..."
I felt that way many times in clubs. LOL.
This was hot!

I sang the whole song in my head. I haven't heard this song played in years. Still fresh!

For some reason, I was never into this song... I guessed that was the reason why I was surprised to see this track do so well on the charts.

Probably her best single, if we're just going to pretend Don't Take It Personal doesn't exist. While Aaliyah didn't mind getting down and Brandy was more willing to cater to the pop crowd, Monica stood in the middle but not without a good set of morals - and it payed too. The First Night is one of Monica's three number 1 hits. Brings you back to 1998. It aged a bit but it still contains it's cool with much thanks to the timeless Love Hangover sample.
