I felt compelled to start this companion thread to "obscure songs you hear at the store" after hearing Boz Skaggs' "Heart Of Mine" on a local "Lite FM" station the other day. It's rare to hear obscure songs on a standard radio station, but occasionally it does happen.
Any other examples?

The station in Lyndonville, VT (Magic 97.7) plays/played Barenaked Ladies' "Call & Answer" like it was the top song of the year when it came out. I have never heard the song on any other Hot AC station.

Lessee... I probably mentioned most of these in that other topic, but I guess I'll post a slightly updated one:
KQKY/Hits 106 (Chr/Pop) (A bunch of these songs may have charted on pop briefly but are hardly remembered anymore. Also, I have tried to leave out the songs Hits they played that didn't hit pop but were extremely popular on other mainstream formats that share a high cume with pop listeners) Def Leppard - Now Def Leppard - Goodbye Def Leppard - Promises Def Leppard - Work It Out Limp Bizkit ft. Snoop Dogg - Red Light Green Light Lucid Jones - Constellation Josh Joplin Group - Camera One Michael Damian - Shadows in the Night Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400 Andreas Johnson - Glorious Plumb - Real Feel - Got Your Name On It SouthFM - Dear Claudia Adelayda - Not Tonight Mick Jagger ft. Rob Thomas - Visions of Paradise Remy Zero - Save Me Evan Olson - So Much Better Wild Orchid - Talk to Me Wild Orchid - Supernatural Kaci - Intervention Divine Kaci - I'm Not Anybody's Girl Kaci - Just an Old Boyfriend Seal - Waiting For You Seal - Love's Divine Simple Minds - Hypnotized Simple Minds - Cry K's Choice - Almost Happy Deep Blue Something - Parkbench Katy Rose - Overdrive Wild Colonials - Charm Universal Honey - Any Road Back Prodigy - Firestarter Prodigy - Breathe Nerf Herder - Welcome to My World (horrible, horrible song) Kenny Chesney ft. Uncle Kracker - When the Sun Goes Down Melissa Pearl - Hit Song Holly Lamar - UnKissed Sarah Harmer - Basement Apartment Jonatha Brooke - Linger Kyle Davis - Buried Alive Moby - Bodyrock Idina Menzel - Minuet Tears for Fears - God's Mistake 38 Special - Fade to Gray Hum - Stars Goldfinger - Here in Your Bedroom Goldfinger - This Lonely Place Indigenous - Things We Do Ben Jelen - Come On Kim Stockwood - Jerk Refreshments - Banditos Duran Duran - White Lines Duran Duran - Out of My Mind Depeche Mode - It's No Good Depeche Mode - Dream On Gabrielle - Give Me a Little More Time Gabrielle - Out of Reach Steely - Simple Girl Breanna - You Don't Have to Be Strong Alysha - Tommy Brings Flowers Whirl Magnet - Ain't It Strange Fountains of Wayne - Mexican Wine BoDeans - Hurt By Love Eleanor McEvoy - Precious Little Ashley MacIsaac - Sleepy Maggie Black Lab - Time Ago Blair - Have Fun, Go Mad Skillet - Savior Tesla - Right Place Tesla - Need Your Lovin' Newsboys - Take Me To Your Leader Newsboys - Reality Poolboys - For Your Love Don Henley - In the Garden of Allah Don Henley - Everything is Different Now Rolling Stones - You Got Me Rockin' Rolling Stones - Anybody Seen My Baby? Rolling Stones - Saint of Me Hampton the Hamster - The Official Hamsterdance Song (yes, this was officially on their playlist) Fleming & John - The Pearl Fleming & John - Ugly Girl P.M. Dawn - Downtown Venus P.M. Dawn - Sometimes I Miss You So Much P.M. Dawn - I Had No Right Orgy - Stitches Orgy - Fiction (Dreams in Digital) Garbage - Queer Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains Garbage - Androgyny 3 Doors Down - The Road I'm On Dag - Lovely Jane Dave Stewart - Jealousy Jana - What Am I To You Jana - More Than Life Jana - Ooh Baby Baby Inner Circle - Not About Romance Inner Circle ft. Chubby C & O.D. - Limbo Rock Philosopher Kings - Charms Boxing Ghandis - If You Love Me (Then Why Am I Dying) Merril Bainbridge - Under the Water Merril Bainbridge - Lonely Merril Bainbridge - Walk on Fire
KSYZ/Sunny 108 (I think they may have dumped the moniker though... Hot AC) At least every song that's ever been on the Hot AC Top 40 and N&A... there's a lot of repeats from the above list though so I won't type one out for this.
They still play a bunch of the above too.

I remember hearing this on WIOG during its run. They've also played "When the Sun Goes Down", but that's because they eat up anything that has Uncle Kracker on it. I also remember them playing Carly Hennessy's "I'm Gonna Blow Your Mind" (I believe she appeared at their Lizard Fair show in 2001, not sure), Jennifer Paige's "These Days" (just thinking about it reminds me of that summer ), Jelleestone's "Money", and D-Cru's "I Will Be Waiting" in at least medium rotation. When Lucy Woodward was added to last year's Lizard Fair line-up, they added "Dumb Girls" to rotation, even though 1) This was after it had already run its course. 2) They'd never played it before this.

Carly Hennessy's "I'm Gonna Blow Your Mind" (I believe she appeared at their Lizard Fair show in 2001, not sure) Yes! She did. And she stole the show with her high-NRG crowd interaction. "LOUDER!!! YEEEEEAH!" "YOU'RE ALL BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!" She even altered her lyrics to please to the crowd. "I just wanna blow your mind!" On Radio Disney: Ashley Ballard - "Hottie" (twice! :o) Kaci - "I Think I Love You" On a now-defunct dance station: Svala - "The Real Me" (twice!) On Z95.7 (R.I.P.): Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes - "Block Party"

I happened to be listening to Long Island's WBAZ the other night and they seemed to be playing nothing but obscure AC songs. It got so I jokingly referred to it as "WBAZ's Friday Night Visit To The AC Song Graveyard". Among the songs I heard... Danny Wilson -- Mary's Prayer Johnny Lee -- Looking For Love B.J. Thomas -- Hey, Won't You Play Another... I couldn't help but think, THIS is the kind of variety AC stations should have. But apparently ratings would plummet the instant one of these songs hit the airwaves during the day...

In 1993, he charted with a remake of a Curtis Mayfield song called "It's Alright". Which one was the one you heard?

I almost never listen to the radio, especially since I got my iPod. But WUVA has played the entire Lauryn Hill album, lots of old 80s R&B, and they like to get some sort of underground tracks too. Ex: they played Sara Devine's "Take Me Home"

That would be the '94 version there, Chris. Actually, the oldies station here has played J.J. Jackson's ver- sion from time to time.

OK. Those songs are easily confused, due to the similarity in titles, as well as their close proximity as to when they were hits (a span of about a year). Something similar happened with two songs by Michael W. Smith a few years before. In the fall of 1991, he released a song called "For You" and then exactly a year later, he put out "I Will Be Here For You". The difference is in the tempo of the songs. The 1991 song was an upbeat, feel good type song and 1992 was a tender ballad. But both songs pretty much convey the same message, so someone could be talking about one of the songs and the other person might be thinking of the other song.

Not to get too far off topic, but that reminds me of a few years ago when Edwin McCain was on the pop chart with "I'll Be". A friend of mine, who mostly listens to country music, said she loved that new song "I'll Be". It was weeks later that I found out she was talking about Reba McIntyre's country hit (not at all the same song), and had never even heard of Edwin McCain!

I heard Missy Elliott's "Funky Fresh Dressed" from Under Construction on my city's R&B station, only they called it "Turn The Volume Up." This was before Gossip Folks was announced as the follow up to "Work It"

I heard Lifehouse's "Spin" this morning on WWCK-FM. I think they have a syndicated Christian (not gospel/prayer service) program on Sunday mornings, because right after, I think, was Stacie Orrico (or someone who sounds like her).
(To clarify for those who might wonder how "Spin" would fit in such a program, I recall hearing that "Spin" crossed-over to some Christian formats.)

This has got to be the weirdest song I have ever heard on the radio. On my pop radio station which is all about new music that is mostly rhythmic... they played "That's When I'll Stop Loving You" by *Nsync. I wasn't sure what it was, and I found out it's an album track from No Strings Attatched. I think it might have been on a syndicated program, but it's still weird.

Open House Party used to play that all the time when the album was new... and John Garabedian said that was going to be their biggest hit, lol.

This is featured on Sunday night's version of Open House Party with Kane on a segment right before midnight eastern time called nighty-nights where listeners can call and make dedications and messages to their loved ones.

Before 99.9 went Country in Daytona Beach, they used to have a segment where they would play the most obscure songs from other countries every night for 30 minutes.
I remembered hearing Prozzak's Sucks to be you Sky- Love Song & She's Some Kind Of Wonderful Amanda Marshall- Dark Horse & Love Lift Me and a lot of random radio remixes. It was my favorite 30 minutes on radio.
