^^ i remembered... keith sweat's "make it last forever" intro sounds suspiciously like this mariah track's lead in ... and it predates "emotions" by almost a year. (and i checked the liner notes... no credit was given.) ;)
** man! i think i burned a few brain cells thinking about this... LOL.

One of my absolute favorite Mariah songs. I was a fan of Mariah after her first album. Wasn't big on the single "Emotions," but when she released this right after, it cemented my love for her. One of her best vocals performances as well IMO.

I think this song is probably in my top 5 favorites from Mariah, if not close. It's a travesty this never hit #1 on the hot 100, yet the horrendous "Heartbreaker" did (but that's for another post).

Good song, but she's had better.

Easily one of Mariah's best singles. I often have a hard time deciding which ballad I prefer from her early career, this or Vision Of Love.
I can actually credit "Can't Let Go" for making me into a fan. The immense vocals, passionate delivery, and immediate lyrics really wrapped themselves around me. This song is very important to me. Don't even get me started on that SNL performance or the Unplugged performance, for that matter.

It's a good song, like most of her early stuff. Still, she's had a few better.

But hey it got to #1 where it counts - on the pop airplay charts (for 3 weeks)... that horrendous other song only managed to get to #21 in the real world! :) www2.uta.edu/hunt/charts/mcarey.html

How didn't I notice this thread before...
This is my third favorite Mariah song EVER. She looks amazing in the video, so beautiful. And I just love the song, the lyrics, everything about it! Yeah I really like this one. :)

This song always felt like a leftover from the debut and I always thought it was from the debut before I was a fan. Even with that being said, it's worth sitting through for the little high note at the end and its retro AC sound.

This song always felt like a leftover from the debut and I always thought it was from the debut before I was a fan. That shouldn't be surprising. Emotions follows the formula of her eponymous debut almost exactly.

This is such an incredible ballad. When Mariah and Walter get back together I'd prefer if they created more songs in this soulful, dreamy vein such as "Can't Let Go" and "Do You Think of Me," rather than basic ballads such as "When I Saw You". The Unplugged version is perfection. Yes!

The intro is a fusion of George Michael's "One More Try"/"Love Will Lead You Back," yes.
One of Mimi's best I-can't-survive-without-you tunes.

Love, of course.
Unplugged and SNL performances were flawless but I also have to add the Soul Train performance as one of my favs:
I love how the audience when from dancing to just focus on Mariah instead. In the end it felt more like a concert than a performance on Soul Train, that's how amazing she was.

Stunning song. Would easily have wished this was a #1 Hot 100 hit over some of her others.
Hit #1 on every radio format it charted on though!

This was also kept out of the #1 spot on the R&B chart, spending 2 weeks at #2.

I just heard the Unplugged version, and I still have chills down my spine. She starts out thanking the audience for being there to see her. The show was supposed to be over, but Mariah wanted to give the fans a little last minute, spur of the moment treat. All I have to say is I am speechless. The vocals are on point. There is a bananas crescendo towards the end where she belts higher and higher and dives right into the chorus. She eventually does a " cause every night I seeeeeeeeee (falsetto)" that is completely breath-taking. This performance puts all her recent performances to shame; that's how good it is. I believe it's on both the Unplugged cd and VHS.

I like it. The beginning sounds just like "Love Will Lead You Back." And the chord progressions of the song remind me of "Somethin' In My Heart" by Michel'le. That's sort of weird that the song sounds like several other songs, since "Emotions", the song that came before, sounded like "Best Of My Love" by the Emotions. I thought that was sort of the point. The entire Emotions album is meant as a throwback to older R&B. "Can't Let Go' utilizes chords that are pretty common in music, so it does sound like several songs. "Emotions" was very clearly modeled after "Best of My Love" as the title of the song references the group. "Make It Happen" harkens to Alicia Myers' "I Want To Thank You." Mariah wrote "If It's Over" with Carole King, and it is clearly reminiscent of 60s/70s Aretha (and Carole) songs. "The Wind" obviously uses the music from a 50s jazz song. The album version of "Can't Let Go" is certainly beautiful. The intro is gorgeous, and then when the song really kicks in, Mariah's vocal is so immediate. It's a great little soul song. I agree the Unplugged version is stunning, too.

Easily her best single from the early 90s. There's no other true contenders for that title for me now.
