One of the earliest songs of the freestyle genre, and also one of the biggest. It was released from her debut album in 1983.

That's the jam right there. I have the 12 inch version of it and it was really awesome! Talk about all of those synthesizers!

I remember listening to K104 in Dallas when I was 17 on Saturday nights and there was a DJ by the name of Yooche` (u-shay) (sp?) who does their mixshow live from the club every Saturday night that plays that version. It's still the tightest of that day.

At the time, Shannon was considered to be the next big thing, while Madonna was probably going to be a one-hit wonder. Boy, was that wrong. :)

Even though it's freestyle, it still had a uniquely produced sound. One of my fave dance trax of the 80's.

Something about this song just seems so bland to me.

I remember watching America's Top 10 with Casey Kasem when the song went Top 10.
I was so shocked because I had never heard it before! Radio stations in Buffalo started playing soon afterward.

New Order's Peter Hook said in this here little feature for British Dance Music industry publication DMC Update that this is "one of those songs you wish you'd written". Besides that, it's also one of those songs that will never fail on the dancefloor, either 20 years ago, right now or in 20 years to come. Even though its production bears the hallmarks of 1984, something in it just transcends it. In a way, it's what classic songs do: they take you back to the eras they were made, while retaining some sort of timeless element(s) that keep it fresh even after repeated plays. This song also makes me wonder how Urban music would have evolved in subsequent years, hadn't Run-DMC and later Teddy Riley came up with more stripped-down alternatives to the full-on electro vibes of most of the scene during a good chunk of the 80s. Vibes that only came back in the late 90s, when Timbaland, Cash Money and The Neptunes burst into the scene.

TIMELESS JAM. Freestyle, baby!
Such an important record for not only dance music, but pop music alike. Anyone who doesn't find themselves enthralled by this simply isn't human. Sorry.

I actually prefer the radio edit of this song...I once listened to the full version, and I couldn't get into it as much as I could when it was shortened. I feel like all the production in the full version makes it sound too much like a different song.

Jordin Sparks, phuck you for bastardizing this song.. but anyways this is def. classic. It's just so catchy and one of the first freestyle songs to really make an impact chart wise.

Yup. The first lady of freestyle set the clubs on fire with this one. When 1983 was over, 2 songs got everyone's attention, more than any other: This one, and Madonna's "Holiday", although the Art of Noise's "Beat Box" was surely creeping up on them in popularity.

I still hear this track in clubs constantly, whether it's a remix or the original.

Speaking of Casey, I remember on AT10 once when he mentioned the name of the male singer on this song. Don't remember his name though. But it was nice of him to credit that voice that we've all heard dozens of times in the last 30 years.

My mom used to play this every chance she got when I was growing up and I never once got tired of it. It just might be my favorite song of all time!

Absolute classic, still sounds so fresh to this day. It's just a cool f**king song, like it has this icy mechanical sheen over it that makes it timeless.
