UU-BRU Internet Radio For Week Ending May 28, 1988
(Rank This Week, Last Week, Artist, Title)
01 01 George Michael - One More Try 02 03 Belinda Carlisle - Circle In The Sand 03 04 Brenda Russell with Joe Esposito - Piano In The Dark 04 06 Daryl Hall & John Oates - Everything Your Heart Desires 05 05 Michael Jackson - Dirty Diana 06 07 Cher - We All Sleep Alone 07 02 Natalie Cole - Pink Cadillac 08 11 Boz Scaggs - Heart Of Mine 09 09 Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat 10 10 Weird Al Yankovic - Fat
PITD spent 2 weeks at #3, but established 2 firsts on my chart.
1) PITD became the first song to become the number one hit of the year without reaching #1 on the weekly charts. PITD was the only song to do this until 2003. Matchbox Twenty peaked at #2 with "Unwell", the top song of 2003.
2) Joe Esposito became the first artist to be credited on more than one year-end number one song. He was the lead singer of Brooklyn Dreams. They, along with Donna Summer, had the #1 song of 1979 ("Heaven Knows"). Joe Esposito remains the only act to accomplish this since my chart debuted in 1978.

I love this song! I like "So Good So Right" too as her as her big hits go. I really like most of her material though.

I love, love, love Brenda. FYI, she has written the music for the forthcoming Broadway production of "The Color Purple."

A song by my first cousin once removed ;)
But seriously, I think this is a cool song. A question for prenatt: How many weeks did this song spend in the Top Ten, as well as on the chart overall. Must have been longer than usual for it to have topped the year end chart without going to #1.
"Unwell" came out on top of my version of 2003 as well.

And an answer for ulij20..... ;)
Let's look at my chart run for "Piano In The Dark".
debuted February 13, 1988 40-36-34-24-18-13-10-9-7-7-7-7-7-4-4-3-3-10-12-12-16-19-20-22-29-30
That's 26 weeks, 12 weeks in the Top 10.
Looking at 1988, the only other songs to spend at least 20 weeks on my chart were:
21 wks Van Halen "When It's Love" 20 wks Boz Scaggs "Heart Of Mine"
The #2 song of the year by Whitney Houston ("Where Do Broken Hearts Go") trailed Brenda Russell by 42 points, a pretty large margin by using my point system. There were also 27 #1 songs that year, the most ever on my chart.
It was the long chart run that put PITD at #1 for 1988. I am so glad I DO NOT add points up until the end of the year. It was quite a surprise to see the song at #1 for the year.

"Heart Of Mine" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" were also among my favorite songs of 1988. "When It's Love" is pretty good too.

It was quite a surprise to see the song at #1 for the year. :) Yeah, that's what happened with me when I added up the points for 2004's charts. I felt sure the top song would be either "Letters From War" or "Tiny Dancer". I was surprised "Leaving 99" was at #1.

Beautiful. One of my favorite songs from her. She also wrote the song Get Here for her 1988 album and also re-appeared as a hit for Oleta Adams. Good songs to really listen to.

I haven't heard this song in many years. But it is an excellent, smoothed out production! I really like this song. It's got a pretty addictive hook for a ballad.

This song is so gorgeous. I never knew she wrote "Get Here"; very talented woman.

Good 80s stuff- and, of course, Flo Rida goes and messes with it for his "incomparable" music.

I heard Flo Rida's version of this for the first time yesterday. Needless to say, this poor song was mutilated badly, and unfortunately we're stuck with it for the next few months. Uggh!
R&R chart run in 1988 40-33-29-26-23-20-18-16-12-10-15-21-35 I love the haunting ending and the lovely piano music.

I prefer the Bingo Players usage of the sample more than Flo Rida. The original is tops!

One of the best 80s ballads/downtempo songs. I occasionally heard this on now-defunct smooth jazz station WNUA 95.5 when I was younger. The AC stations in my market may had played it too.
